The first season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is one of the streaming era’s most perfect stretches of television — the kind of once-in-a-generation Hale-Bopp of a comedy that can only happen when a singular talent is given a blank check to make her dream project a reality, and then the stars align so that it somehow turns out just right. And so — fresh off Emmy and Golden Globe wins for Best Series — creator Amy Sherman-Palladino knew exactly what she had to do to keep the magic alive for Season 2: Change everything.
Sitting next to her husband and creative partner Daniel Palladino in a quiet Manhattan hotel suite that felt worlds removed from the manic zeal of their work, Sherman-Palladino suggested that you might have to kill a golden goose if you want to make something more valuable out of its feathers. “The thing that interests us the most,...

How do you follow up something as beloved as The Girlmore Girls? If you're that series' creator, Amy Sherman-Palladino, you create a show called The Return of Jezebel James (which lasted three episodes in March 2008), another called Bunheads (a single season in 2012), write a four-episode reunion series called Gilmore Girls: Year in the Life in 2016, and then, the following year, create something called The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel — destined to become the belle of the Emmys. Which, earlier the year, might have been hard to imagine. The title doesn't exactly suck you in upon first hearing, does it? And it isn't necessarily enhanced by its premise: a comedy-drama set in 1958 New York, following a Jewish housewife, who, after her marriage takes a hit, discovers that she has an ability for stand-up comedy that can be honed and possibly lead to great things. Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband Daniel are most famous for creating the long-running beloved dramedy Gilmore Girls, but their follow-up series haven’t been as fortunate. Bunheads was cut off too quickly after only a season, while dreadful sitcom The Return Of Jezebel James likely shouldn’t have been created in…

You think Amy Sherman-Palladino wishes she had stayed on for the final season of Gilmore Girls? Today, Fox canceled The Return of Jezebel James after just three episodes. The Return of Jezebel James was the first post-Gilmore Girls production from creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. It starred Parker Posey as a book editor and Lauren Ambrose as Posey's difficult sister who is going to carry Parker Posey's baby – a baby who now will never, ever be born. There probably aren't a lot of people out there upset by this news. The Return of Jezebel James received abysmally low ratings and universally terrible reviews. This early and abrupt cancellation has become something of a pattern over at Fox. Last Fall, Nashville was canceled after just two episodes and, before that, Bryan Fuller's beloved Wonderfalls was axed after only a few episodes. Jezebel James is only the latest casualty.

Fox has pulled the low-rated sitcom The Return of Jezebel James from its schedule.
The network yanked episodes off Friday nights, effective this week.
Last Friday's 8:30 p.m. episode failed to improve on its time-period premiere, earning a 1.4 rating among adults 18 to 49. James was paired with repeats of " 'Til Death," which was also removed from the lineup. Instead, Fox will air repeats of Bones.

ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition topped a modestly rated Sunday evening, but the reality hit's freshman lead-outs Oprah's Big Give and Here Come the Newlyweds continued to decline.
Airing four hours of unscripted shows, ABC won the night among adults 18-49 and total viewers (9 million, 3.2/9). ABC ran America's Funniest Home Videos (7.4 million viewers, 2.3 rating in 18-49 and a 7 share), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (12.0 million, 4.1/11), Big Give (9.7 million, 3.6/9) and Here Come the Newlyweds (7 million, 2.9/8).
Fox came in second with six half-hour comedies, mostly repeats. A rerun of Family Guy was the highest rated (6.7 million, 3.4/9). Fox also aired originals of King of the Hill (6 million, 2.8/7) and Unhitched (4.4 million, 2.3/6), the latter falling 8% from last week.
CBS and NBC tied for third, with CBS airing 60 Minutes (11.1 million, 2.0/6), Big Brother (6.3 million, 2.3/6) and repeats. NBC had two hours of Dateline (8 million, 1.9/6) and repeats. The CW had repeats and Everybody Hates Chris (1.1 million, 0.5/1) and Aliens in America (900,000, 0.4/1).
Also, on Friday, Fox's new sitcom The Return of Jezebel James (3.2 million, 1.0/4) debuted with back-to-back episodes and posted the network's worst time period performance since fall's The Next Great American Band. CBS' The Price Is Right (8.7 million, 2.0/7) won the night but declined yet again.

Fox has tweaked its strike-affected midseason schedule, upgrading the time periods for new dramas New Amsterdam and Canterbury's Law and giving two midseason series, Amsterdam and The Return of Jezebel James, previews behind American Idol.
Fox was the first network to rejigger its midseason lineup on Nov. 7, the third day of the writers strike, and has made the most dramatic strike-related scheduling move, keeping the incomplete season of 24 on the shelf until next season.
Two months later, as the work stoppage is shaping up to be a long one, Fox brass took another look at its scheduling plans, said Fox's scheduling chief Preston Beckman.
"As we have new information on our needs, we thought it was time to adjust the schedule," he said. "We want to make sure we give all new shows every opportunity to find an audience because we may need them."
Amsterdam and Canterbury's were originally slated to air in the Friday 9 p.m. time period, premiering Feb. 22 and Apr. 11, respectively.
Now both shows have been relocated to Monday 9 p.m.

Meanwhile, Eric Roberts has joined the cast of NBC's breakout hit "Heroes".
"Pit", from Sony Pictures TV and Denis Leary's Apostle and writer Michael Chernuchin, is a drama with comedic elements set at one of the worst, most crime-ridden NYPD precincts in Brooklyn, where bad cops are sent to live out their careers and rookie cops with no connections are stationed.
Dale will play Bobby Bonelli, who is new to the police precinct and fresh out of the academy, where he was tops in his class.
Dale most recently co-starred in Martin Scorsese's "The Departed". His TV credits include Fox's "24." He is repped by ICM, Myrna Jacoby of MJ Management and attorney Geoff Oblath.
