Producer Jonathan Sothcott talks about running an independent film company in the UK, finding the right project and a post-Brexit industry.
Jonathan Sothcott has had a hand in producing a whole lot of independent films here in the UK over the last decade. You may have even seen a fair few of them yourself, especially if you’re a Danny Dyer completest.

He’s the man behind Hereford Films, the production and financing company he runs with partner Damien Morley. If that name rings a bell, it might well be because Morley owns a modelling agency that takes care of most of the Page 3 girls, and the entrepreneur has even recently launched a bid to buy the Page 3 brand off The Sun himself.

It’s always great when those inside the filmmaking biz get in touch to turn us on to some of the more interesting upcoming releases so we were delighted when prolific producer Jonathan Sothcott (Dead Cert, The Asphyx remake) gave us a heads-up regarding the UK DVD release of Robert Pratten’s indie body-horror Mindflesh.
Sothcott had this to say:
"Robert Pratten's Mindflesh is a film I dearly wish I'd produced - its an exceptionally original, striking movie in the Cronenberg style - gore, girls and endless psychological tricks. I was amazed it hadn't found a home on UK DVD and so introduced Robert to my friends at 4DigitalMedia, who released my first film Wishbaby. They now have it scheduled for an extras-packed DVD release later in the year when hopefully it can find the wide audience it richly deserves."
Adding, "Robert is an exceptionally intelligent, provocative filmmaker and...

Director: Stephen W. Parsons. Review: Adam wing. Stephen W. Parsons might not be a name you’re familiar with but it’s fair to say that he’s been around a bit. Parsons writes, directs and scores his own movies these days, so he’s kind of like an early John Carpenter, he also appeared in 1985’s Howling II but it’s probably best if we don’t mention that for now. Wish Baby is Parsons first attempt at directing and his debut effort hit the headlines recently when he banned young children from seeing it. Officials at the BBFC had originally given the film a 15 rating but the nature of the movie, not to mention some of its more disturbing content, led the director to urge censors to raise their game. So that’s what they did, which is why Wish Baby now comes complete with an 18 certificate on its R2 debut.

Film censors have been forced to reclassify horror movie Wishbaby - after the director complained it was too violent for young teenagers.
Officials at the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) had originally given the movie - which features sexual violence, torture and black magic - a 15 rating, meaning it could be viewed by anyone aged 15 or over.
But director Stephen Parsons was so concerned of the effect the slasher movie could have on impressionable teenagers, he urged censors to ban under-18s from viewing it.
And BBFC bosses agreed to up the film's rating ahead of its release on DVD next month.
Parsons says, "I deliberately set out to make a horror film for an adult audience. When I was told it had been given a 15 certificate I was disturbed, not least because one of the scenes, which involved a character being filmed as he was tortured and the footage being sent around via mobile phones, could have incited copycats."...

A British actress who drove over and killed the father of her children has been cleared of murder charges.
Wishbaby star Ann Faulkner, 49, admitted crashing into and running over husband Patrick Johnston, 39, following an argument but remained adamant she had no intention of hurting him.
She alleged Johnston, her partner of 13 years, had jumped on the hood of the car after she tried to drive away from him in August 2007.
She told London's Old Bailey court, "I don't know how he got there. I assume he had jumped on the bonnet. His face was in front of me.
"He was screaming. It was a split-second thing. I keep going over what did I do. It was over in a flash."
The court also found Faulkner not guilty of manslaughter charges.

Producer Jonathan Sothcott gave Fango the scoop that his long-mooted remake of the 1976 British chiller The House On Straw Hill (a.k.a. EXPOSÉ) is set to roll March 23 in East England. Actor (Waxwork II, Embrace Of The Vampire) turned filmmaker Martin Kemp (pictured below) scripted the film and is directing, with Sothcott producing via his Black and Blue Films.
The story concerns a best-selling author named Paula Martin who’s suffering writer’s block on her latest book, and goes to an old house in the country to get her creative juices flowing again. Paula requests her agent to send her an assistant, who turns out to be a young woman named Linda. At first the two get along great—but then Linda becomes manipulative, then violent, then homicidal.

British producer Jonathan Sothcott got in touch with news of a UK DVD release for his new fright feature Wishbaby. The movie, in which an urban teenager is granted the knowledge of how to create the titular living and deadly doll, arrives April 13 from 4Digital Media.
“I’m really thrilled that Wishbaby will finally be born when it is unleashed on a fully loaded disc,” Sothcott tells Fango. “A week before that release, it will have a limited theatrical run in London, which is so exciting. The film will resonate with people, as it has a pretty grim urban setting indicative of the tough times we live in.”
“Wishbaby is a challenging film that will surprise people,” adds writer/director Steve Parsons. “The wishbaby itself is a mischievous little chap, and I think this release will win it a lot of fans. I’m still hard at work on the follow-up,...

We caught wind of a crazy looking urban UK horror feature entitled Wishbaby, which was directed by S.W. Parsons. Stephen is an award-winning composer for film and television. He has scored a number of horror films including Funny Man, Howling 2 and Split Second. If you head on over to the official website you can check out all sorts of cool stuff, especially a insanely creepy trailer (this looks like a gem!). Wishbaby is a savage fairytale set in a contemporary urban landscape. A troubled young black teenager Maxine rescues an eccentric old lady Eve from an unhappy slap by a mixed-race gang of teens and is rewarded for her act of kindness with the gift of a terrible secret: how to make and operate a Wishbaby.
