Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting Manish Tewari presented the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke award for life time achievement to Pran Kishan Sikand (popularly known as – Pran) at his Bandra residence today in Mumbai. The veteran actor, 93, was unable to travel to New Delhi to attend the National Film Awards function held on May 3, 2013.
The Minister, accompanied by I & B Secretary Uday Kumar Varma and a delegation of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the Directorate of Film Festivals presented the coveted award, comprising a Swarn Kamal, citation, shawl and a cash prize of Rs 1 million (Rs 10 lakhs).
Speaking on the occasion, Manish Tewari said “it is an honour for me to present this award to Pran saab in person, in the centenary year of the Indian Cinema.

Academy Award-nominated director Deepa Mehta is all set to release her newest film Midnight’s Children in the United States on April 26 in New York City, opening exclusively at the Angelika and Beekman theaters. Directed and written by Bollywood director Nikhil Advani (Kal Ho Na Ho, Salaam-e-Ishq), Delhi Safari is his first foray into an animated adventure feature. The original Hindi film version was voiced by some of the greats of Bollywood, including Boman Irani, Govinda, Akshaye Khanna and Urmilla Matondkar. When I heard about that project I was very intrigued, and when I saw the trailers and heard the fab songs by Shankar Ehsaan and Loy and I couldn’t wait to see and hear more about Delhi Safari. I was also excited when I heard that in an unique move, Advani and the producers also made a version with an American cast that includes some of the greats of Hollywood, which included Jason Alexander, Brad Garrett, Vanessa Williams, Jane Lynch, Christopher Lloyd and Cary Elwes – a nice coup. It is the Hollywood version, which by the way has been shortlisted for the Oscars for animation,...

The Indian actor, producer and film-maker Dev Anand, who has died aged 88, was the first and longest serving matinee idol of Bollywood cinema. The pinnacle of his career came with Guide (1965), a film based on Rk Narayan's novel, in which Dev played the male lead opposite the classical Indian dancer turned actor Waheeda Rehman. Dev's talented younger brother Vijay directed it. During the golden age of Indian cinema, in the 1950s and 1960s, Dev, along with Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, formed the trio of stars who dominated the silver screen. Dev's urbanity and quirky mannerisms made him especially popular among the young and women.
He was born in undivided India at Gurdaspur, in the Punjab region. His father, Pishorimal Anand, was a leading lawyer. After graduating from the prestigious Government College, in Lahore, Dev tried and failed to enter the Royal Indian Navy.
