Parents Guide for
Sin City (2005) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

Note: The number at the beginning of each section refers to how much explicit content of that kind there is in the film on a scale of 1-10. The fraction at the end of the last section is the total sum of the sections over the highest sum possible (50) and is therefore an approximation of about how explicit the film is a whole.

Sex & Nudity: 6

There is a large amount of sexual content throughout the entire film, including lots of passionate kissing.

In the beginning of the film, a man tries to molest a small girl, but is stopped.

There is a short sex scene where Marv has sex with Goldie (Jaime King) where we see her breasts for about 10 seconds as she straddles him. She is also shown topless after she is killed and left on the bed.

Lucille is shown topless after she gets out of bed. Her breasts are fully exposed for about 30 seconds until she puts on a robe. There are also two shots of her buttock in a thong. Her fully exposed buttocks is also visible in a later scene. It is later revealed she is a lesbian in a voice over by Marv.

Shelley is shown in her panties and man's dress shirt for almost all of her screen time. Lots of cleavage is visible.

Gail wears a revealing fish-net outfit, though only her butt is seen. In one scene she's kneeling down, revealing a large amount of cleavage.

Nancy dances provocatively on stage in a cowgirl outfit as a stripper, though she does not reveal anything.

Numerous prostitutes are seen in revealing clothes.

A male character's genitals are ripped off and partially shown, though it just looks like an unidentifiable mass of flesh.

In a scene in the director's cut, we see Lucille in bed with Claire, both of them are topless.

Violence & Gore

Violence & Gore: 10

Highly stylized, graphic, bloody violence throughout.

Body parts are chopped off with various weapons.

Guns are shot at people, usually resulting in graphic wounds.

A couple disturbing and bloody beatings.

A man's head is crushed by beating.

A man is eaten by a wolf (mostly left to the imagination; the wolf is briefly seen biting his leg in a sillhouette-esque scene).

A man's testicles are ripped off on screen

It is said that a man is a cannibal (some body parts are seen in his lair). References are made to this fact multiple times.

It should be noted that although the violence is bloody and often 'graphic,' the violence is exaggerated to such an extreme that it looks extremely fake (see Kill Bill for a more extreme example of this type of violence).

To get a feel of what the bloodshed is like, watch this scene from the movie (WARNING: contains bloody violence): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ec8lsN8Clc

Profanity

Profanity: 3

No Strong language. But mild dialogue such as 'son of a bitch', 'bastard' are used occasionally.

Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking: 4

Most of the characters are either seen smoking and drinking.

Bencio Del Toro's character recklessly drives drunk.

Scenes take place in a bar.

Two characters have heart conditions and take pills in a very irresponsible way and abuse them.

Frightening/Intense Scenes: 5

The scene where the cannibal has been ripped to pieces and the dog is eating whats left him before he is decapitated (see Violence & Gore). The man's head is later seen (although the actual decapitation is not).

A girl is slapped around by her ex-boyfriend (domestic violence).

While a man is urinating, another man sneaks up behind him with a razor and threatens to "cut you in ways that'll make you useless to a woman," he says. Then he drives the man's head into the toilet and almost drowns him in his own urine.

Two men are in a car, one is dead and one is very tired... the one who is tired imagines the dead man coming back to life in the car. The dead man is graphically shown smoking a cigarette through a deep slit in his throat

A scene in a dungeon-like basement shows some heads of dead women.

An idea of how accurate the TECE (below) is: 5-10 is a little-kid suitable, G-Rated type of film (i.e. Care Bears, Sleeping Beauty); 10-15 is going to be a little harsher, but not by much (i.e. The Incredibles); 15-20 could be pretty high up there (i.e. Indiana Jones), 20-25 is going to pretty darn adult (i.e. The Dark Knight); 25-30 is going to be a film most likely not suitable for anyone under 17 (i.e. THIS); 30-40 is going to be an absolutely, positively adults-only film (i.e. Saving Private Ryan) and if a movie has ever gone past 40, then I haven't heard of it.

Total Explicit Content Estimation: 28/50.
