As Nicolas Cage says in the new trailer for "Dying of the Light," "There are two kinds of men in this world: Men of action - and everyone else."
Well, it often seems like there are two kinds of Nicolas Cage: the gifted star of "The Rock" and "Leaving Last Vegas" - and the guy who's just cashing paychecks. For "Dying of the Light," it seems he's the latter.
The trailer isn't actually bad. Cage huffs and puffs as a veteran, decorated CIA agent who goes rogue after learning his nemesis, a terrorist named Banir, might still be alive.
Unfortunately, there's not much else to it. Plus, the strange history behind the movie - director Paul Schrader is disavowing it after feuding with producers over the final cut - does not bode well for the final product.
"Dying of the Light" opens Dec. 5.

Chicago – It’s kind of a light week at the Blu-ray and DVD store (do they still have those now that Blockbuster has closed?). As studios prep a lot of major releases for holiday season, a few titles have been released on Blu-ray, DVD, and streaming services this week that we wanted to highlight, including a decent animated flick, a great foreign one, and a bunch of movies that may interest you but that you should probably avoid.
The Attack

“The Attack”
The best new release of the week is this moving foreign film about a man shattered by the realization that his wife may not be who he’s always thought she was. The revelation brings to the surface the man’s own history and the piece becomes a moving meditation on the crisis in the Middle East and how the past and hidden conflicts are always there,...

Bones is finally making the move to Fridays at 8/7c this week after years of dodging the oft-stigmatized night. But executive producer Stephen Nathan isn’t fretting about the show’s new home.
“Thankfully, this has happened at a time when the days of the week really don’t mean all that much on television anymore,” said Nathan during a recent conference call. “So many people timeshift the show… We still have a large audience that watches us when we are on, but I’m not that concerned with Friday. I think all these loyal fans are going to come over to Friday.

White House Down is the second movie showing the Capitol under siege for 2013.
Like Olympus Has Fallen, White House Down tells the story of a man (Channing Tatum, Side Effects) who’s denied his dream job of protecting the President (Jamie Foxx, Django Unchained) then ends up being the one person who can save the country.
Tatum’s John Cale is a Capitol Policeman, and when he takes his daughter on a tour of the White House, he ends up being in the right place at the wrong time. When a heavily armed paramilitary group takes over the complex, Cale’s the only one who can save the day.
Directed by action movie guru Roland Emmerich (2012), White House Down also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal (Nanny McPhee Returns), Jason Clarke (The Great Gatsby), Richard Jenkins (Killing Them Softly...

Ryan Gosling in Drive
Photo: FilmDistrict Note: This review was originally published on May 19, 2011 after I saw it at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. I am reprinting it here as it hits theaters this weekend.
As blood dripped down Ryan Gosling's face in director Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive the Cannes audience couldn't help but laugh. It wasn't a laugh as a result of something funny, it was a laugh of relief as this year's Cannes Film Festival has offered an abundance of diversity and Drive appears to be the aggressive, head-stomping capstone. But as violent and intense as this film can be, it has its share of honest laughs and silent moments, making for the best film I saw at this year's festival. As far as who deserves the credit -- sit back -- there are a lot of kudos to be handed out.

Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada simply says that as fans we sit here time and time again and watch a movie or TV show fail and wonder why they don't put comic book people in charge. People who actually knows what the hell is going on. Well hello 2011 because that's what Quesada has planned and I'm loving it! In an interview with Comic Book Resources Quesada had a lot to say; There’s too much stuff to list, and so much of it is still in the developmental stages, so I wouldn’t be able to talk about it anyway. What I can say is that the things on my “To do” list extend way beyond 2011, just as they did on my list when it was only publishing. It’s an amazing new world here at Marvel, we have so many incredible doors that have opened up to us,...

Marvel's Chief Creative Office Joe Quesada, says it best. "Back in the day, so many of us in the creative community would sit back and watch someone produce a TV show or a movie based on a comic book and see it flop miserably because those people didn't understand what made those characters work. We'd sit there going, 'Why didn't they hire comic book people?'" In 2011, that's exactly what Marvel plans on doing [1]. Read more after the jump. In an interview with Comic Book Resources [2], the former Editor-in-Chief, now Chief Creative Officer, was asked now that he doesn't have to worry about the publishing arm of Marvel, what his plans are for 2011. There's too much stuff to list, and so much of it is still in the developmental stages, so I wouldn't be able to talk about it anyway. What I can say is that the things on my...
