Netflix’s Dolemite is My Name is writer-director Craig Brewer‘s first movie in eight years. Before this, Brewer, who made his debut with The Poor & Hungry and broke out with Hustler & Flow, last directed the 2011 Footloose remake. Since then, he’s written scripts that never got the green light and directed several episodes of Fox’s Empire. But after eight years […]

Netflix has dropped the first trailer for Eddie Murphy’s new film, Dolemite is My Name, which is a biopic that will tell the story of the life of Rudy Ray Moore, “a comedy and rap pioneer who proved naysayers wrong when his hilarious, obscene, kung-fu fighting alter ego, Dolemite, became a 1970s Blaxploitation phenomenon.”
The movie looks fantastic, and it’s awesome to see Eddie Murphy in a great movie role again! It looks like he’s going to give a hell of a performance! He’s in the zone! I missed this Eddie Murphy!
The movie comes from director Craig Brewer, and it has an impressive supporting cast that includes Wesley Snipes, Keegan-Michael Key, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chris Rock, Craig Robinson, Tituss Burgess, Mike Epps, T.I., and Chelsea Gilson.
Here’s the synopsis that was released for the film:

Filmmaker Craig Brewer rose to prominence in 2005 with his feature film Hustle & Flow, going on work on critically acclaimed series such as The Shield and Terriers, as well as taking up duties behind the camera on Black Snake Moan and the 2011 version of Footloose. Despite the filmmaker’s success, however, one movie of his has yet to make it to the public; his debut feature The Poor and Hungry. Made five years before Brewer found success with the story of DJay, the film has not had a widespread release, despite the filmmaker’s publicly proclaimed fondness for it. Now, however, Brewer has taken matters into his own hands, and is offering the film for free to anyone who would like to see it. On the film’s site, Brewer has this to say.
This movie is special to me. It’s my baby, my favorite. It launched my career and...

Hollywoodnews.com: The Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards Gala turned 15 last night with an extravagant affair at the Beverly Hilton. After a week of screenings at the Arclight Cinemas, hundreds of directors, producers, screenwriters, actors and film fans gathered to honor, as the festival puts it, “excellence in the art of filmmaking.”
Technically, I wasn’t working the event. I attended as a guest of festival founder Carlos De Abreu (who’s also the publisher of HollywoodNews.com). Luckily, my friend Scott Feinberg was covering the star-studded gala and has a thorough rundown of the evening’s guests and how they factor into the current awards race. You can read that recap here, and browse a photo gallery of attending celebrities on the red carpet here.
Awards conversations will follow for the next few weeks and months. We’ll have so much to say about...

Hollywoodnews.com: “Footloose” director Craig Brewer views his career in reverse.
He never would have been able to attempt the remake of the classic 1984 dance drama if not for “Black Snake Moan.” And he never would have received the opportunity to make “Black Snake Moan” if it wasn’t for his Oscar-winning “Hustle & Flow.” And “Hustle & Flow” wouldn’t exist without his debut feature film, “The Poor and Hungry.”
“At the time I made that movie, I was living in a house that’s very similar to the one you see in ‘Hustle & Flow.’ It was a shotgun house, and we had made the movie by hook and crook. My father had passed away unexpectedly, and he was always the biggest fan of the scripts that I’d wrote,” Brewer recalled. “And I used $20,000 of my inheritance to make that movie.”

Will Tarzan be back? Warner Brothers Pictures signed director Craig Brewer to write a new installment of “Tarzan.” His pitch involves the Tarzan story to take place over three films, according to Deadline. Brewer directed the upcoming remake “Footloose.” He has directed and written several films including “Hustle & Flow,” “Black Snake Moan,” and “The Poor and Hungry.” The studio is very intent in re-launching this famous character created by author Edgar Rice Burroughs.
