Mike Posner may not be the first person you'd expect to have a podcast. After all, he had a hit song in 2009 -- the earworm known as "Cooler Than Me" -- and made an impressive comeback in 2016 after a few years away from the spotlight, namely with his banger, "I Took a Pill in Ibiza."
But if you know Posner, the opportunity for introspection isn't strange at all. In fact, his new podcast, What Does This All Mean?, is a natural extension for the inquisitive Duke University grad. The new series explores what it means to be human, with a recent episode diving deep into his life-changing, chance meeting with Kanye West that ultimately led to a lesson in how to turn failure into success. Posner knows what it's like to reach the heights of fame and also how to find himself again, which makes the difficult journeys he's taking us on with his 10-episode podcast all the more...

In 2014, Marvel and Netflix revealed they would not only be making sweet superhero television together, but that their ambitions went well beyond just creating a few shows starring comic book characters. No, the plan was to create an integrated world which would live within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but more importantly launch four unique superpowered-esque forces with four individual series, to be eventually united as a team of heroes defending New York City.
It might have seemed crazily ambitious at the time, but very soon the first season of “The Defenders,” featuring the stars of “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” and “Iron Fist,” premieres on Netflix.

Moment of truth: The Oscars will always feel long. It’s a three-plus hour awards show built around handing out trophies and listening to speeches. It’s going to drag at times, and the 89th Academy Awards ran way over time. Knowing that this is expected — that the show tends to drag no matter what the host does — only makes Jimmy Kimmel and the producers’ decision to open the show as they did all the more ballsy.
From the moment Justin Timberlake broke into his extremely catchy nominated song, we, indeed, could not fight the feeling. And that feeling was utter exuberance.
And while it kept the feeling flush for a while, the uncontrollable building blocks of the Oscars eventually brought things back down to earth. The speeches weren’t all that surprising, save for a few, and the winners weren’t particularly shocking in the major categories — except...

‘My Life As A Zucchini’ Review: This Oscar Nominee Is An Animated ‘Short Term 12’ That Keeps It Real
From “Oliver Twist” to “The Fault In Our Stars,” younger viewers have always had an affinity for melancholy. Call it a penchant for melodrama, unfettered access to emotions without shame, or maybe it’s taking comfort in life’s messier truths before social mores encourage them to project happiness at all times. Children often feel things more intensely than jaded adults; it follows that they would respond to narratives that are comfortable painting with shades of grey.
Which is not to say “My Life As A Zucchini” isn’t colorful. Visually, it uses a whimsical palette and exudes vintage charm. The figures, with their circular eyes and ruddy noses and ears have that certain stop-motion je ne sais quoi. The wide, circular eyes of the film’s mournful protagonist, Zucchini, are rimmed in blue to match his hair, painting his face with a pallor that mirrors the blues inside.

With its combination of horror and racial commentary, “Get Out” (Universal) is the best bet to lead the Top 10 this weekend. With a chance to be not only a hit but also a game-changer, it looks like both a breakout for first-time director Jordan Peele and yet another winner for producer Jason Blum.
The timing on Oscar weekend, particularly in the aftermath of #oscarssowhite, is fortuitous, and it moves into release with a whopping 100% on Rotten Tomatoes after 85 reviews. Horror maven Jason Blum is also an Oscar-nominated producer (“Whiplash”) as well as the force behind M. Might Shyamalan’s “Split,” the first film of 2017 to gross over $100 million domestic.
“Get Out,” as befits its origins from comic actor/writer Jordan Peele (who stays behind the camera), is a mix of humor and horror in its tale of an interracial couple meeting her wealthy liberal white parents for the first time.

Michael Dudok de Wit’s Oscar-nominated “The Red Turtle” manages to avoid a lot of conflict in telling its animated 2D cycle of life story. However, the face-to face encounter with the eponymous creature represents an early dramatic high point.
Each time the castaway tries to leave the island in his raft, the turtle attacks it, until the third time they finally meet. “It’s not casually being annoying in attacking the raft — it’s clearly motivated, which is really interesting,” de Wit told IndieWire. “It has eye contact with the man. And then the turtle manages to destroy the raft, the man falls in the water, and he’s very uncomfortable being in the water with the turtle. But the turtle just looks intently at him and just swims away.”

“Ups ain’t the only brown that delivers.”
Actor Mike Colter’s guarded, injured, and ultimately good-hearted turn as Luke Cage was one of the few pleasures the first season of Jessica Jones had to offer. On his own and grounded in a much more immediate and organic sense of place and moment, he doesn’t disappoint. Luke Cage, adapted from the comics created by Archie Goodwin, George Tuska, and John Romita, Sr., is an atmospheric pleasure miles away from the one-note sarcasm of Jessica Jones or the relentless action figure workouts of Marvel’s blockbusters. The thoughtfulness and restraint with which the show approaches the struggle over Harlem’s identity, as embodied by the black men and women living, working, and dying on its streets, is refreshing.

Marvel’s Luke Cage has easily been one of the most anticipated new dramas of 2016. After Mike Colter’s breakout performance as the Power Man in last year’s Jessica Jones, Marvel fans were anxious to see what the actor could bring to a show of his own. Would Colter be able to anchor a Luke Cage series and help it reach the same quality of Jessica Jones and Netflix’s other Marvel series, Daredevil? The answer, after one episode at least, is a resounding yes. Colter continues to fully embody the character of Luke Cage, who finally gets to take center stage as the action switches

This season, I'm going to try to write up some quick thoughts about each episode the day after it airs. I won't get too deep into full-on recaps (you can find those all over the internet, and you've probably already read a few today if you're into that sort of thing) and will instead focus on what I consider to be each episode's best moments. This can be as many or as few as I want, and will likely vary every episode — today, there are four. I'll also toss in some additional observations that don't fit into the "best moments" category, which you can find at the bottom of the post. Author of Just Like Hell, Down, Lights Out and more, Nate Southard's prose has had a visceral effect on readers for quite some time now. Originally published in 2012, Scavengers gives readers a look at the zombie apocalypse through Southard's unique storytelling, and now the living dead tale is back in print courtesy of Sinister Grin Press. We have an exclusive excerpt from Scavengers that you can read right now.
"Millwood was a good place to be when the dead rose. It was small, isolated, and easy to defend. The survivors there forged a community, weathered what came, and began to prosper. But then they ran out of food. Now, Millwood is sending five men to the neighboring town of Rundberg, a place ruled by three thousand living dead, to find enough food to save their community. Five against three thousand? They don't stand a chance."

Welcome back to Moment of Truth, Movieline's weekly spotlight on the best in nonfiction cinema. This week, we hear from Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek about the band's new documentary When You're Strange, which opens Friday in limited release.
For a rock band whose filmed legacy includes at least a dozen concert and video compilations -- not to mention a full-scale Hollywood biopic -- it's not just a little bizarre that The Doors were never the subject of a feature documentary until now. Enter When You're Strange, director Tom Dicillo's fairly straightforward doc (narrated by Johnny Depp) interweaving archival performance and interview footage with extended, never-before-seen footage of late vocalist Jim Morrison's own experimental film, Hwy: An American Pastoral. Some of it looks like it was shot yesterday, reinforcing Morrison's enduring mythology as a half-martyr, half-ghost whose mission is carried forward here by surviving members Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore.

Gang Starr Mc Guru suffered a cardiac episode over the weekend and is currently in a coma, according to multiple reports. Details were unavailable at press time about the rapper's condition and when the incident occurred.
Hot 97's news director Miss Info reported that Guru is currently in a New York-area hospital where he's expected to undergo surgery.
Gang Starr's DJ Premier was scheduled to appear on Sirius Xm's Hip-Hop Nation satellite radio station late Sunday night to speak about Guru's condition. However, Premier never called in: According to the producer's blog, the sensitivity of the situation prevented him from speaking publicly. In the same post, Guru was described as "fighting for his life."

We had put the sales trailer up for Jake Goldberger's great looking black comedy starring Thomas Haden Church and Elisabeth Shue a few months ago, but were asked to remove it. We've just been given a heads up that the first official trailer has arrived, which is much better than the first one anyway.
Synopsis:
Twenty-five years after abandoning his hometown, Don McKay (Thomas Haden Church) gets a letter from his ex-girlfriend (Elisabeth Shue) saying that she is dying and wants him to come see her. When Don returns home, Sonny doesn't seem quite like he remembers her and everything seems a little bit off. In this darkly comic debut thriller, Moment Of Truth, writer/director Jake Goldberger tells a story where no one is who they seem and everyone appears to be hiding something.
Incidentally, the film is called Moment of Truth stateside.
Watch the trailer at Apple.

Welcome back to Moment of Truth, Movieline's new weekly spotlight on the best in nonfiction cinema. This week, we hear from the director of The Art of the Steal, opening Friday in New York and Philadelphia, March 12 in Los Angeles and currently available for on-demand viewing via Sundance Selects, iTunes and Netflix.
If, as its subject has said, the tightrope-walking exploits detailed in Man on Wire were the "artistic crime of the century," then the skulduggery reported in Don Argott's new documentary The Art of the Steal might be the artistic crime of the 21st century. The film orbits around the Barnes Foundation, a venerated 90-year-old arts repository and educational center just outside Philadelphia, and the home of billions of dollars worth of post-impressionist and early-Modern work by Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne and other masters. Before dying in 1951, its founder, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, left a will explicitly stating...

Welcome back to Moment of Truth, Movieline's new weekly spotlight on the best in nonfiction cinema. This week, welcome the makers of October Country , currently playing in New York, opening tomorrow in Los Angeles, and expanding on March 12 to San Francisco, Seattle and Denver.
You've already read a little bit here about October Country, the lyrical, harrowing debut documentary by co-directors Michael Palmieri and Donal Mosher. The story of Mosher's family -- three generations attempting to extract themselves from the grip of abuse, teenage pregnancy and other haunted memories in New York's working-class Mohawk Valley -- has attracted acclaim virtually everywhere it's played, and it will compete next month for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary. Yet October Country yields another, less-heralded tale as well -- one about a filmmaker and a photographer whose chance encounter in the unlikeliest of spots resulted in one of the unlikeliest (and most fruitful) of collaborations.

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Moment of Truth, a new weekly Movieline feature dedicated to the best in up-and-coming nonfiction cinema. This week we introduce you to Ernst Aebi (right), the subject of the new documentary Barefoot to Timbuktu, which opens today in NYC (with dates to come in Los Angeles and elsewhere). Please welcome him!
Manhattan has a club for pretty much everything and everyone, and on a recent freezing night uptown, the Explorer's Club hosted an event for one of its own. Two decades of Ernst Aebi's world travels had been gathered in a new documentary screening that evening, but this wasn't home-movie footage or amateur cell-phone video from the North Pole (which, yes, Aebi has also visited). This was the stirring, semi-crazy story of how he helped restore a remote Saharan village virtually from scratch -- and kind of by accident.

While many of you have argued in your comments that, at the end of the day, “Loser” is “just a game show,” I beg to differ. That’s like saying “Moment of Truth” was “just a game show.” Believe me, as someone who won a Prius and some fancy spa stuff (mainly due to smoking some other contestants in the “Britney or Whitney?” round on “Temptation”), I know game shows.
And “The Biggest Loser” is no game show.
Thankfully, that point was driven home this week, as all of the contes...

Update: At the behest of the movie's director Jake Goldberger, we've removed the trailer, which was not intended to be seen by any of you. Hopefully we'll soon have a real trailer to show you, particularly one that doesn't spoil some of the best parts of the movie. Also worth noting: the title is still Don McKay, at least in the United States. I caught Don McKay at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, where it got a lot of discussion amongst critics and audiences, even though I found it a little too tonally uneven and long to be totally successful. The movie hasn't yet found distribution, but for some reason there's a new trailer for it at Quiet Earth. (via JoBlo). Also, the generic-sounding title Don McKay has been changed to the even more anonymous Moment of Truth. What on earth is going on here? Though the movie is pretty...

We're pleased to be the first to bring you the trailer for Jake Goldberger's darkly comic thriller, Don McKay today. The film was a hit at this year's Tribeca Film Festival and stars a pretty stellar cast headed up by Thomas Haden Church and Elisabeth Shue (man, haven't seen her in a while). Personally I like these kinds of small town, nothing-is-as-it-seems thrillers and I can't wait to check it out.
