Ah, the thrill of plunging into a good movie with no prior knowledge. It’s rare, not simply because of the ubiquity of marketing material in the connected world, but also because said films don’t usually live up to the version imagined in one’s own mind… It Comes At Night is a dark, small-scale apocalyptic thriller that works best if all you know is that it’s a dark, small-scale apocalyptic thriller. It is taut, tense, brutal, scary, and filled with perfectly calibrated performances. Now, go see it.
Okay, if you must know more, here we go. The setting is sometime after some kind of apocalypse. An old man is dying. Paul (Joel Edgerton) takes him to the woods, shoots him, and then incinerates his body.

It's not often that listening to a cast album makes one think of Richard Strauss, but such is the genius of Scott Frankel and Michael Korie. The composer-lyricist team best known for the brilliant Grey Gardens is back with War Paint, the story of rival beauty moguls Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden. Here both story and emotion are thinner, but the music is gorgeous--Straussian in its elegiac beauty and bell-like notes--and worthy of its two stars, Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole, two of the most unique and exciting voices in musical theater. Like a golden-age Hollywood director 'managing' the two stars of a women's picture, the score has to find ways to manage its two leads, giving each an equal role. Ebersole gets an old-fashioned entrance--her Red Door spa staff sings breathlessly, 'She's coming, she's coming...,' bursting into a triumphant 'She's here' LuPone's entrance is less heralded but equally dramatic and separate,...

While the first teaser trailer for “Krisha” filmmaker Trey Edward Shults’ highly anticipated upcoming horror feature, “It Comes at Night,” played up atmosphere over plot (like any good teaser), the film’s newest full-length trailer piles on the plot details, but that doesn’t keep it from being any less intriguing.
The film stars Joel Edgerton as patriarch Paul, who has sequestered his family (including his wife, played by Carmen Ejogo, and their teen son, played by rising star Kelvin Harrison Jr.) in a secluded country house after something terrible has decimated modern civilization. When another young family (including Christopher Abbott and Riley Keough) arrives on their property, Paul makes the choice to keep them around, because what could possibly go wrong with adding more terrified people into an already on-edge situation?

The Mikaelson clan expands yet again in this week's filler episode of The Originals...
This review contains spoilers.
2.6 Wheel Inside The Wheel
How many Mikaelsons is too many Mikaelsons? The Originals veered even further into the ridiculous this week as a few more family members were revealed to be back in New Orleans and begging for a reunion. Not only do we have Esther, Mikael, Kol and Finn resurrected, but now there's Klaus' werewolf father and Esther's evil sister to deal with – Julie Plec really didn't want to waste the opportunity of The Other Side closing, did she?
As a result of this character dump, Wheel Inside The Wheel was a bit of a filler episode in a show that doesn't do well with filler. The people on The Originals don't function like normal characters, only talking in grand speeches and interacting with veiled ulterior motives, and so when we...

The Originals is treading ground The Vampire Diaries long exhausted. Here's Caroline's review of Red Door...
This review contains spoilers.
2.5 Red Door
Enough with the doppelgangers already. Anyone coming to The Originals from its parent show will know how darn overused the doppelganger element is on The Vampire Diaries, and never has that been more clear than right now. While it’s thankfully been discarded on this season of Vd, for instance, this week saw Nina Dobrev guest star on The Originals, bringing the love triangle over with her.
It’s not the same love triangle, but it might as well be. It actually shows The Originals in a good light, all things considered, as its immediately clear how much more clever and interesting the show is than two brothers fighting over one girl. Alas, this was the reason I didn’t enjoy the flashbacks in this episode – it felt...

The Originals, Season 2, Episode 5, “Red Door”
Written by Declan De Barra and Diane Ademu-John
Directed by Michael Robison
Airs Mondays at 8pm Est on The CW
On this week’s The Originals, Elijah is held captive by Esther, Mikael kidnaps Cami, Hayley and Marcel team up to aid Klaus, and Davina discovers Kaleb’s secret identity.
Though “Red Door” is full of exposition–both visual and vocal via Esther–quite a lot still happens to progress this season’s story forward. Season 2 is very heavy with information about the original family, but a family as old as the Mickaelsons has an awful lot of exciting and emotional and interesting stories to tell, both in the past and in the present. Actually, the present storyline wouldn’t be nearly as intriguing if The Originals weren’t dolling out tidbits of history along the way–the two elements together are weaving into...

Last night’s The Originals was just about perfect. If you watch this show for the action, there was plenty of gory bloodshed and fighting. If you watch for the relationships, well, that Elijah and Hayley scene at the end was definitely a tease amongst other things. If Klaus had actually gotten in the car and started driving after throwing Mikael in the trunk at the end of the last episode, things could have been much worse. We saw Mikael was immune to Papa Tunde’s blade and he very easily could have turned it on Klaus. Luckily, Cami has a heart and wouldn’t leave without making sure Davina was okay. Speaking of Davina, it’s about time she discovered Kaleb’s true identity. It’s still weird for me to think of Kaleb as Kol, maybe because Daniel Sharman’s accent is so distracting. Anyway, their alliance against...

In this week's episode of The Originals, "Red Door," Lenore plays some serious mind games with Elijah. Klaus is forced to hunt down Mikael when he takes Cami hostage. And Davina learns Kaleb's true identity.
With the demise of poor Tom last season on Tvd, and the mass exodus of Markos and the Travelers, it seemed as if the doppelganger storylines were finally finished. Turns out, not so much. In this week's episode, we get to meet the "original doppelganger," Tatia. This is just an excuse to lure Tvd fans into watching The Originals by doing a crossover of sorts.

The Americans Season 2, Episode 6 “Behind the Red Door”
Written by Melissa James Gibson
Directed by Charlotte Sieling
Airs Wednesdays at 10pm Et on FX
For a season that opened with a family being brutally murdered in their hotel room, “Behind the Red Door” reaches new levels of darkness for The Americans, a display of just how ugly things can get when love is involved (and when its in the dangerous minefield of espionage, multiply that potential ugliness by about a thousand). Openly dramatic but also intensely intimate, “Behind the Red Door” is not only one of the best episodes of The Americans this season, but in the series.
The Americans begins teasing much larger ideas for season two in “Behind the Red Door”, introducing Laric as a very savvy (and very gay) wild card for Elizabeth and Philip to deal with. He’s tied up in some deal about Nicaraguan rebels being funded (or armed?...
