Last week, the news that André 3000 would be releasing an album of instrumental flute jams was greeted with enough head-scratching to draw blood. But don’t tell that to Jake Fridkis, who plays principal flute with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. If you’ve heard DJ Khaled and Drake’s “No Secret” or Roddy Rich and Ty Dolla Sign’s “llf,” among others, you’ve heard his instrument, which was woven into the fabric of those tracks. “It’s now hit the point where people are saying, ‘Flute is the new instrument in rap,...

“Carlos” has one of the best openings I’ve ever seen — or heard — in a music documentary. We hear Carlos Santana, waxing philosophical and wise (as he’s prone to do). Intercut with his words, at throbbing intervals of about 20 seconds (and at top volume), are the iconic organ-and-bass notes — Bom Bom!…Bom Bom! — that open “Oye Como Va,” the 1971 hit by Santana. I’ll confess that “Oye Como Va” is one of those classic-rock radio staples I feel like I’ve heard more times in my life than I ever need to. (Sort of like “Moondance” and “Tempted” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.”) Yet “Carlos,” instead of assaulting you with the song, severs those four notes from it (Bom Bom!…Bom Bom!) and blows them up into a piece of pop art, like a Warhol sound painting. It asks us to hear the magic of what Carlos Santana...

Two months after stunning fans in Japan by working Grateful Dead songs into his otherwise rigid setlist, Bob Dylan has moved onto the catalog of Van Morison. At Alicante, Spain’s Plaza de Toros Alicante on Thursday evening, he broke out a cover of Morrison’s 1970 classic “Into the Mystic” for the first time in his career. Check out this remarkably clean audience recording.
Van Morrison has been playing Dylan songs going all the way back to his days as the frontman of the Sixties garage band Them. They covered “It’s All Over Now,...

Van Morrison has said that he wants to start looking at alternative outlets to release the “mountain of material” he has ready to go.
The 77-year-old singer, best known for hits such as “Brown Eyed Girl”, “Moondance” and “Crazy Love” said that he’s had to stop himself writing new songs, because he has so many already.
Morrison is releasing his forthcoming album Moving on Skiffle in March – marking his 44th studio record.
The legendary artist says that traditional labels are only able to put out a few records each year, which doesn’t cater for the amount of music he wants to release.
"It’s been a problem getting records out, so I’ve been looking at other alternative outlets,” said Morrision while being interviewed by Billy Bragg for the April issue of Mojo magazine.
"The big companies can only do one or two big records a year. This...

New York’s Hudson River valley has a long history as a haven for artists either fleeing the exhausting grind of New York City or seeking to the area’s natural beauty. It’s where Bob Dylan retreated for an extended retreat following his (possibly exaggerated) motorcycle crash in 1966, it’s where Van Morrison conceived of Moondance, and it’s currently home to — among others — jazz musicians Jack DeJohnette (drums), John Scofield (guitar), John Medeski (keyboards, of Medeski, Martin and Wood) and Larry Grenadier (bass), who formed the newly-organized collective Hudson. People is pleased to premiere their version of Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay,...

It's bad enough to be a werewolf, hunted by the light of the full moon. But to be a foreign werewolf? That's beyond cruel. An American Werewolf in London squirms with comic unease from the get-go, and almost immediately from its release 35 years ago — August 21st, 1981 — the bipolar horror-comedy has been celebrated on two impressively different fronts: as a landmark in startling makeup effects that legitimized the gross-out, and as a riotous piece of fish-out-of-water college humor. Calling the film a sick joke is perfectly apt. It's a sweaty, shuddery experience,...

Elliott Landy, the celebrated rock and roll photographer whose portraits grace the covers of both Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline and Van Morrison’s Moondance, has created a Kickstarter to fund a book of his photographs of The Band, including a plethora of never-before-seen images. Landy also photographed the cover for The Band’s second, eponymous album and reports to have shot over 8,000 frames of film of the group during the 1960s, only approximately 30 of which have been published to date. “I wanted to bring my Band photographs to life for many years, I just haven’t had the opportunity," said Landy...

Located just south of what people generally consider to be geographically speaking the heart of Mayfair, sits Quaglino’s, a restaurant with a grand history and synonymous with style and glamour. Originally founded in 1929, Quaglino’s, named after the founder, was created when Mr. Quaglino discovered his lover was having an affair with a fellow restaurateur. Determined to better his love rival he opened his own establishment with a goal of providing better food with outstanding service. Unlucky in love, but lucky in life, Quaglino’s quickly became one of the hottest establishments in London and was frequented by royalty of stage, screen, the music world and actual royalty. Indeed it was known as Edward VIII favourite restaurant; not a fan of eating in a tie he would often be seen entering the private dining room with a certain Mrs Simpson to enjoy an evening of casual dining in a not so casual establishment.

Michael Jackson once sang, "You can't win / You can't break even/ And you can't get out of the game." With that in mind, a group of music publishers including Peermusic, Bug Music and Warner Chappell Music has won $6.6 million in a copyright infringement lawsuit against LiveUniverse, Inc. for displaying lyrics online to such songs as Van Morrison's "Moondance" and Ray Charles' "Georgia on My Mind." LiveUniverse was a company founded by Brad Greenspan, one of the co-founders of MySpace. Chicago – With the release of “The American,” it’s time to rally ‘round the flagpole and see if it waves. And that mix of metaphors conjures the great American film, the movies with American or America in their titles that have flown like an eagle soaring through red, white and blue skies on a starry night, punctuated by fireworks on the 4th of July.

As unblinking and truthful story about the American Dream as any pre-9/11 film, Ab rides on the performance of Kevin Spacey as a burnt-out corporate nebbish named Lester who is unloved by his ambitious real estate agent wife (Annette Bening) and is quietly desperate about the life that has passed him by.
When Lester is unexpectedly freed from his 9 to 5 hell, he embarks on a journey which includes workouts, weed and lust – for an unattainable teenage friend of his daughter.

Early Friday (October 9) morning, Nasa fired the latest salvo in its ongoing war with the Mooninites, smashing a rocket into a lunar crater just because they felt like it.
Ok, that's not necessarily true. The stated purpose of Nasa's mission was to discover water ice buried beneath the surface of the moon, but we here in the MTV Newsroom would like to think that Nasa's real intent was twofold. First, to get revenge for the infamous Mooninite invasion of Boston in 2007, and second, to remind those moon jerks that the Earth still is the big dog on the galactic block … and, well, if you can't run with the big dogs, You Better Stay On The Porch.
So, in celebration of the Earth being #1 — and to rub it in the face of those lunar losers even more — we've made a playlist of our favorite "Moon" songs. Yeah, that's right, we're calling you out,...

Friday 26th June 09 was a sad day for many as they woke up to the news of Michael Jackson’s untimely passing. Although tributes were many and were omnipresent on TV and radio, the image that seemed to represent the high point in the singer’s career and resonate with fans and general public alike was his epic ‘Thriller’ video. Probably the most famous and influential music video ever, the landmark film was directed by the incomparable John Landis. On the day of Jackson’s death, Landis was in London to attend the Curzon Soho’s ‘Midnight Movies’ tribute to him with a rare screening of An American Werewolf In London.
