On Jan. 19, 2001, Stacy Peralta’s skateboarding documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys lit up the Sundance Film Festival, going on to earn multiple honors in Park City and, later, a feature film treatment, Lords of Dogtown. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
Where the debris meets the sea, that’s the tight scope on Dogtown and Z-Boys. It’s a wild ride with eight boarders from Venice Beach, Calif., that was a deserved co-winner of the Audience Award for documentaries at the Sundance Film Festival. Director Stacy Peralta also deservedly garnered the director honor in the documentary category.
Carved through the waves and asphalt of Venice, Dogtown follows the daring exploits of a tight-‘n’-tough band of wayward teens, outsiders who assaulted the softblue world of ’70s surfing. Hardened from single-parent homes and charged with pent-up energies, they took to the waves with a take-no-prisoners style.

Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak opened the 2021 American Music Awards with an ultra-smooth performance of Silk Sonic single “Smokin Out the Window.”
The duo, decked out in velvet-y red suits, traded vocals in front of their massive live band, including backing vocalists, a trumpet player, and saxophonist. Like the song itself, everything about the spot evoked the 1970s: the retro dance moves, the glowing stage lights, the big sunglasses, the hints of chest hair.

We’re nearing the end of the Grammys eligibility period: August 31 is the deadline, after which new music releases will be up for consideration for the awards held in 2023. And as we near that crucial date, there has been a major shift in our odds. Based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, Olivia Rodrigo is now the front-runner to win Album of the Year for “Sour.”
Rodrigo has been a strong Grammy contender all year. Her breakthrough single “Drivers License” has been on top of our Record of the Year and Song of the Year odds since we launched our predictions center this past spring. But her album, which was released on May 21, has risen gradually and recently took over the top spot from Silk Sonic‘s “An Evening with Silk Sonic.”

It’s been five months since Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars blew everyone’s minds with the reveal that they’d formed a supergroup during the pandemic, and almost as long since they released their great debut track, “Leave the Door Open.” We’ve had nothing new from them since then, which if you ask us, is an insanely long time to have to wait.
Fortunately that’s over for now, because Silk Sonic (Finally) dropped a brand new song, “Skate,” late Thursday night. And yes, in case you can’t get your volume working, it’s G-r-e-a-t. But don’t take our word for it — watch the official video, co-directed by Mars, Florent Déchard and Philippe Tayag, at the top of the page right now.

They say don’t meet your heroes, so beating your heroes is probably ill-advised as well — unless you’re dealing with skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. Brazilian skateboarder Gui Khury did just that at the 2021 X Games, becoming the youngest gold medalist in the competition’s 27-year history and earning major props from his childhood idol.
On Friday night, 12-year-old Khury made X Games history by landing a 1080 turn on a vertical ramp, winning the Vert Best Trick contest. Khury beat out eight other competitors, including Hawk himself.
Watch Khury pull the incredible move and earn a congratulatory embrace from the skate legend here.

From the very first Atari game of Pong that attempted to recreate an arcade version of table tennis, to Nintendo’s Wii Sports whose efforts to get us up off the sofa were a good thing, video games based on sports have always been popular. As console technology developed better graphics and more complex gameplay the sports genre has produced some classic games. But what is it about sports games that have us so hooked?
For some, it’s merely a love of the sport itself. Not content with a full sports schedule on TV, the playability offered by internet access allows gamers to interact with other players for some exciting competition. It’s the same drive with fantasy football leagues; the excitement of playing the game is enhanced when you have a greater interest in the outcome. So, which sports have made it big as video games?

Switzerland’s Tristan Aymon, director of short film “Black Hole” (“Trou Noir”), the only title to win two prizes at the 2020 Locarno Festival – a Pardino d’Argento in Swiss Competition and a Youth Jury best Swiss short – is preparing “Skate,” his feature debut.
Written by Aymon and Marianne Brun, his co-screenwriter on “Black Hole,” “Skate” will tap into the same context, themes and, above all, emotions of “Black Hole,” a low key and laid-back but resonant, semi-autobiographical evocation of a close-knit gang of teen skateboard enthusiasts, whether skating, lazing by the local lake, driving around country roads in a Vitara convertible, or sharing a joint at a party.
The tone darkens when one of the gang, Vincent, the film’s protagonist, learns he is being sent abroad to study; he may be leaving the valley for ever.

The more emotion-driven a TV series or movie, the more important the soundtrack. And boy is Normal People, the Hulu adaptation of Sally Rooney’s wildly popular novel of the same name, driven by the emotion of its characters and world.
Normal People follows Marianne and Connell’s complicated relationship as they move from being teenagers at a small town in western Ireland into young adulthood at Dublin’s Trinity College, and showrunner Ed Guiney, directors Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald, music supervisors Juliet Martin and Maggie Phillips, and editor Nathan Nugent have done an impressive job crafting the music landscape for this world.
“We were trying all sorts of tracks ourselves,” said Abrahamson, who mentioned Martin, Phillips, Nugent, and himself as the chief collaborators in the process. “So, as well as the work that Stephen Rennicks, the composer, was doing, it was just, again, a very organic kind of collaboration.

Dogtown And Z-boys (Blu-raySONY Home ENTERTAINMENT2002/Rated PG-13/91 minsNow Available – List Price $24.95By the mid seventies, skateboarding was considered to be a sixties fad that had all but died out, except for a handful of committed fans in Santa Monica, California. When a group of surfers known as the Zephyr team sought to translate the phenomenal stunts of world-class wave riders onto their skateboards, they had no idea they were giving birth to modern skateboarding. At the Santa Monica Surf Shop, Zephyr Productions, twelve of these surfers organized themselves into a team to compete at local skate events with the help of the store's owners Jeff Ho and Skip Engblom. Soon the radical moves and urban style of the Zephyr Skate Team, aka Z-Boys, destroyed public preconceptions of skateboarding as a sport and a lifestyle, and the pioneering styles of Z-Boy skaters like Tony Alva, Jim Muir, and Jay Adams...
