Being a stunt performer is hazardous, very often life-threatening, work. But that's the job, and you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone else on a movie set as excited to get a cool shot in the can as they are.
Safety is always the priority, and with every stunt all contingencies are thought of in advance, all necessary training is executed, and first aid crews are standing by. Still, a dangerous stunt is a dangerous stunt and sometimes things can go wrong. That could mean a broken bone or two, like when Tom Cruise famously broke his foot during the filming of "Mission: Impossible -- Fallout" or when Guy Norris broke his leg during an iconic crash/ragdoll moment during the making of "The Road Warrior."
On occasion, a stunt performer will actually die while shooting a stunt scene, like when Joi Harris crashed her motorcycle during the filming of "Deadpool 2.

Movies are one of the most common forms of entertainment nowadays. However, the audience is rarely aware of how difficult the process of making a movie is, and it can potentially even endanger the people present on the movie set. Although the action sequences and stunts are usually done by trained professionals, and the studios assure us of good security measures on movie sets, the accidents are still happening, unfortunately.
In the history of Hollywood, many movies remained infamously known for tragedies and unfortunate situations that happened on the movie set. We still remember when Brandon Lee was fatally wounded while filming ‘Crow’ back in 1993. Joi Harris, a stuntwoman, tragically died while performing a motorcycle stunt while filming ‘Deadpool 2,’ and let’s not forget the most recent tragic event when Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, was shot dead by a prop gun on the set of ‘Rust.’

In August of 2017, Joi Harris was performing a motorcycle stunt on the set of Deadpool 2 when she lost control of her bike and crashed through a window. She was pronounced dead at the scene shortly thereafter by a medical team. Now, nearly three years after the tragedy, Harris’ death has been declared “accidental” by a coroner.
Harris had rehearsed the stunt seven times before shooting and increased her speed right before the crash occurred, with the stunt woman traveling between 20-25 kilometers per hour during the incident. After the accident, WorkSafeBC found Tcf Vancouver Productions negligible and fined them $300,000. Violations included failing to do a risk assessment before performing the stunt, increased speed, limitations of the equipment and completing a safety checklist.

It was an accident that rocked Deadpool 2 and Hollywood as a whole a few years back.
Of course, we’re talking about when Joi “Sj” Harris, a 40-year-old professional rider from New York City, was killed during production of the Fox sequel while performing a motorcycle stunt that went awry on the Vancouver set. Production immediately shut down for several days afterwards as investigations took place.
From what was reported at the time, we know that Harris was performing the stunt in question in and around Jack Poole Plaza when “she lost control of her bike, hit a curb, and was thrown into a plate-glass window of the Shaw Tower.” And now, almost 3 years after the incident, the producers behind Deadpool 2 have been slapped with a hefty fine of almost $300,000 – $289,562 to be exact – for “failing to provide a safe workplace.”

In an effort to make stunt work safer, SAG-aftra will soon launch its Stunt Coordinator Eligibility Roster – a list of those who have successfully completed 500 verifiable days of work as a stunt performer or coordinator on a SAG-aftra production. The roster will be released in March 2020.
“Many changes have evolved in the motion picture industry specifically related to stunt activity,” the union said. “The evolution includes more complex and dangerous stunt activity as productions seek high volume action sequences often filmed in remote and environmentally hostile areas of the planet.”
In October 2018, the guild’s national board implemented a Stunt Coordinator Minimum General Standards Eligibility Process “to assure that those presenting themselves as stunt coordinators have met minimum standards in their craft.” The new roster will contain the names of those who have met those minimum standards.

An investigation into the motorcycle crash that killed a stuntwoman during the filming of “Deadpool 2” found that 20th Century Fox committed multiple safety code violations that contributed to the accident.
On August 14, 2017, stunt rider Joi Harris died while performing a stunt during “Deadpool 2” on location in Vancouver. The stunt involved driving a high-powered, 900cc Ducati motorcycle down a ramp on a flight of stairs, but Harris lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the side of a building.
The investigation’s report, which was released by WorkSafe BC on Wednesday, said that the Fox production made multiple safety errors, including not setting up barriers that would have prevented Harris from hitting the building and failing to allow Harris to wear a helmet.

Twentieth Century Fox committed several safety errors that contributed to the fatal motorcycle crash on the set of “Deadpool 2,” according to a British Columbia workplace safety investigation.
Joi Harris, a stunt rider, was killed on Aug. 14, 2017, when she lost control of her motorcycle and crashed into the side of a building in downtown Vancouver.
Investigators from WorkSafe B.C. allege that the studio made a long list of errors, including failing to assess the risks of the stunt, failing to allow her to wear a helmet, and failing to set up barriers that would have kept her motorcycle inside the film set.
The agency said it is now considering what penalty should be assessed.
In a statement, a Fox spokesperson took issue with the report, and said that the studio had stepped up its safety measures in the wake of Harris’ death.

20th Century Fox has reportedly settled out of court with the family of Joi Harris, the motorcycle stunt woman who was killed in 2017 during the production of Deadpool 2 in Vancouver after an accident on the set riding a high-powered Ducati motorcycle.
The settlement, for an undisclosed amount, is to be made available to the family following the case’s path via New York probate court, which is where Harris lived.
The Hollywood Reporter had the news first Thursday, speaking with the Florida attorney Michael Buckley, who repped the family.
Harris was the first African-American female professional road racer. She was doing her first film as a stunt performer on Deadpool 2, Deadline reported at the time.
Witnesses said the crew was filming a stunt sequence when Harris lost control of her motorcycle and crashed through a plate-glass window at Shaw Tower on West Waterfront Road near Jack Poole Plaza.

David White, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director, met Tuesday night with some 80 stunt performers to hear their concerns about safety, pensions and contract issues. Stuntwoman Jane Austin, who’s the union’s national secretary-treasurer and president of its Los Angeles local, also attended the meeting, which was held at the offices of Stunts Unlimited in Chatsworth, CA.
Safety is the chief concern of all stunt professionals – an issue that was highlighted when two stunt performers were killed on the job last year: Joi Harris on Deadpool 2 in Vancouver and John Bernecker on The Walking Dead in Atlanta.

It seemed to take an age for those behind Deadpool 2 to confirm their casting choice for the role of Cable – giving rise to numerous, persistent rumours, involving everyone from Kyle Chandler to Brad Pitt. When the announcement finally arrived, though, it made perfect sense – Cable would be played by Academy Award nominee Josh Brolin. Despite also starring in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as space-based supervillain Thanos, Brolin has clearly embraced his role as Deadpool’s partner-in-mercenary-adventures with gusto.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview, the actor reflected upon his experience working with Ryan Reynolds, who produces and stars in the movie as the titular anti-hero.
“He’s an amazing guy, very smart and really sweet — and really handsome. He’s a smart guy, he’s the one who saw this and tried to get this movie made for eight years and was unable to. I think he has such a perfect sensibility.

In typical fashion, Ryan Reynolds’ Merc is also perched on top of the crashed vehicle, and is seen waving to nearby crew members and fans before Julian Dennison’s newcomer enters the scene. Dressed in prison-like overalls, one would assume Dennison plays a mutant in the upcoming sequel, one imprisoned by a ruthless (and potentially governmental?) organization and transported across town against his will. But an attack on one mutant is an attack against them all.
