Renowned hip-hop producer Madlib enlists Black Thought and Your Old Droog for his new track “Reekyod,” the producer’s first single in three years.
Over a crackling, D.O.C.-sampling beat crafted by Madlib, the two rappers showcase their lyrical prowess. “Everything I spit, shine/Imma get mine, regardless,” Droog proclaims on his verse.
“This is strictly for the honorees,” Black Thought said of the collaboration in a statement. “Madlib is in his bag per usual and Yod is more than a force to be reckoned with. Simply complex,...

Madlib is back with a new single, “Reekyod,” which features The Roots’ Black Thought and Your Old Droog. The song marks Madlib’s debut release on his own label, Madlib Invazion. Stream it below.
“Reekyod” is Madlib’s second collaboration of 2024 with Your Old Droog following last month’s “Dbz,” a Madlib-produced effort that also featured Denzel Curry and Method Man. While “Dbz” offered a smooth sound, “Reekyod” feels more urgent, offering room for the rappers’ respective claims on artistic freedom. “Everything I spit, shine/Imma get mine, regardless,” says Droog.

On Blue Lips, Schoolboy Q’s first album since 2019’s utterly unremarkable Crash Talk, there’s a sense that the Los Angeles rapper is trying to make up for lost time. He exudes an assured confidence throughout that, unlike past releases like 2016’s Black Face LP, makes it feel like he has something to prove. He’s able to whip up an endless amount of versatile and oddball flows, and does so with an equally fresh and flippant demeanor.
Schoolboy delivers each word on “Pop” with a tossed-off precision that’s both laser-focused to fit the track’s rhyme scheme and casual in its cadence. He punctuates the word “pop” with a snickering snarl, accompanied by the sound of a pistol being fired. Later in the track, he lowers his voice to a scruffy register, furiously spitting his words out. The entire song, including a notably batshit Rico Nasty feature,...

If there’s one defining feature of seemingly every Kanye West album rollout, it’s gotta be chaos. In the past, it was usually good chaos — oh, how we yearn for the days of first-week sales competitions, Good Friday drops, and music videos projected on buildings. But these days, it’s often grim chaos, and the rollout for Vultures 1, West’s new collaborative album with Ty Dolla $ign, has been another exhibition in the form: delays upon delays, sample issues, diatribes of various kinds, and an alternate album cover based...

Vultures is among us. On Tuesday, Kanye West and Ty Dolla $ign shared the Jon Rafman-directed trailer for the long-teased LP, released under the music super duo’s ¥$ alias.
The dark video, backed by the LP’s title track “Vultures,” sees sepia-colored clips of backrooms, owls, basements, and men in black cloaks holding massive guns. West, wearing a black ski mask, is spotted several times in the video. One quick scene appears to show West’s Donda house on fire.

Five years ago today, the world lost Mac Miller at 26. Five years ago Wednesday, I lost my brother Christian at 21. In 2018, I worked for another outlet, and I learned about Mac passing while checking Slack in an attempt to briefly take my mind off the motorcycle accident that took my brother. But I was just inundated with more death.
At the time I pondered writing about whatever symmetry I could think of to get my mind off things. My brother was a rapper like Mac. They were both way too young.

Mick Jenkins has shared “Guapanese,” the latest preview of his upcoming album, The Patience. Watch the visualizer for it below.

It’s nearly two weeks until Chika’s debut album drops, and two stylists — one for her locs and one for her makeup — are hovering around her near the door of a New York City hotel room. Even as the women buzz around her, preparing her for the photoshoot accompanying this interview, she’s trying to keep an eye on me. She’s playful, animated, and occasionally firm as she talks to me via Zoom through a laptop angled at her chair. “Sorry, should I look up?” she asks the makeup artist.

But most notably, he says, he’s grown accustomed to members of the audience viewing him more as a friend than a performer. This is thanks to his massively popular Discord server, which hosts approximately 135,000 users and has rooms dedicated to questions about audio engineering and specific production software, as well as general channels dedicated to banter or games.

Producer Kaytranada and Portland rapper Aminé have paired up for a full-length collaborative project, under the portmanteau KAYTRAMINÉ. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.
The album reunites the two artists after nearly a decade of mutual behind-the-scenes support that resulted in three Kaytranada-produced tracks on Aminé’s 2015 mixtape, Calling Brio. The 11-track effort includes features from Pharrell Williams, Freddie Gibbs, Snoop Dogg, and Big Sean.

On Kaytraminé, their first collaborative album, producer Kaytranada and rapper Aminé create a carefree summer soundtrack. Kaytranada is pictured floating in a pool on the album’s cover, brandishing a smoldering joint with laissez-faire cool that echoes his production style, which is rife with beats that ripple in slow motion and synthesizers that reverberate like fireworks. Alongside Kaytra, Aminé is seen leaning forward, champagne flute in hand, with a mischievous smile, all perfectly mirroring his dynamism as an Mc.
Aminé’s performance on “Rebuke” unfolds with an assured nonchalance, while his flair for infectious hooks is evident on “Eye.” As the album unfurls, his focus shifts seamlessly between past and present, placing his humble beginnings in the context of his success. “I used to sip Jarritos every goddamn day…Now I’m in the Swiss alps sippin’ champagne,” he boasts on “Master P,” a playful flex but also a proud...

Flatbush Zombies’ Meechy Darko has teamed up with Freddie Gibbs and DJ/producer A-Trak for a new song, “On God,” off his upcoming solo debut, Gothic Luxury.
Produced by Jay Versace and Dot Da Genius, “On God” begins with a grandiose flourish but settles into a groove that’s still propulsive, but also subtle and unsettling in its own ways. Meechy Darko and Freddie Gibbs trade sprawling, heavy, and brutally honest verses on the five-minute track, while A-Trak arrives at the end to show off his signature scratching skills.

The font size on many music festival lineups has been shrinking lately, as new events, jam-packed with megastars (who sometimes don’t even show up) have cropped up in the time since pandemic restrictions have eased around the world. For fans, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. Rappers starting their own festivals, by now, seems like a natural part of the game. Everyone from Tyler the Creator to Drake to Travis Scott to Pharrell have put on some version of a multi-artist music festival, featuring a dizzying slate of acts who,...

King Without a Crown: Ongaro Crafts a Rap Trap in Portrait of Creative Crisis
Fifteen years ago, Jay-Z defiantly declared “Thirty’s the new twenty” in “30 Something,” embracing the cache of maturation, long term success, and the development of his own artistic expressions in a youth obsessed industry and musical genre. Rapper Freddie Gibbs makes his screen debut in Diego Ongaro’s Down with the King as a musical artist trying to maintain a similar sense of relevance while battling creative ennui and the crushing machine of social media defined celebrity. A narrative of awkward transitions in the realm of artistry and adulthood, Gibbs shines in this simmering portrait of a defensive musician unsure of how to continue in the lane of gangsta rap as he retreats into the wilderness to regain his composure.…...

"I don't know if I'm ready to jump back on stage yet." Sony has revealed an official trailer for an indie film titled Down with the King, which originally premiered last year and is finally arriving to watch on VOD coming soon this summer. It first premiered in the 2021 Cannes Film Festival sidebar selection known as Acid, and it also played at the Deauville Film Festival and American Film Festival in Poland last year. Real-life rapper Freddie Gibbs stars as a famous rapper named Money Merc in the film. Disillusioned with the music industry and the pressures of being a celebrity, he leaves the city and his career behind to find himself in a small-town farming community in the Berkshires. This sounds great! The cast includes Bob Tarasuk, Jamie Neumann, David Krumholtz, and Sharon Washington. This is exactly the kind of premise for a film that I enjoy, and glad this isn't some dumb comedy.

Gunna virtually appeared on The Late Late Show to perform “Die Alone” and to chat with host James Corden about his newest album, DS4EVER, which dropped in January. The moody performance finds the rapper onstage alone, singing into a hanging microphone.

“Practice makes perfect,” the rapper explained of his ability to freestyle. “I think it just comes from recording it and just doing it and doing it.

In 2019, Joey and Persephone, both avid Travis Scott fans, traveled from their home in Fresno to Las Vegas in the hopes of catching the star performing at the Day N Vegas festival. Unfortunately for them, Scott, who is known for his frenzied, full-throttle live shows, hurt his knee while playing at Rolling Loud that year. He didn’t recover in time for Day N Vegas, and he had to pull out of the event.
Joey, 29, and Persephone, 28, returned to the festival this year again in the hopes of catching Scott.
