The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has hired a prominent Washington, D.C.-based crisis management firm to assist its messaging effort as the double actors and writers strike grinds on with no end in sight. The studios’ trade association has been under an unprecedented national spotlight in its four-decade history as the work stoppages lead to severe ripple-effect economic consequences.
The organization as well as the PR company, The Levinson Group, declined to comment. It’s led by namesake Molly Levinson, a former political director at CNN and CBS turned strategic adviser for corporate clients with reputational and risk concerns. She’s also known for her work on behalf of the restaurant Comet Ping Pong, countering “Pizzagate,” as well as the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team in its campaign for pay equity.

Emmy voters will have a chance to pick Joe Biden on their ballots all over again. On Tuesday, the Television Academy nominated “Celebrating America: An Inauguration Night Special” in the best variety special (live) category, putting the inauguration event up against the Oscars, the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and the Grammy Awards at the 2021 Emmys.
“‘Celebrating America’ was more than an entertainment special. It highlighted a message, not hitting you over the head with it,” executive producer Ricky Kirshner, a multiple Emmy nominee and veteran of live events, told Gold Derby earlier this year. “It reached out to America and that had a lot to do with [fellow executive producer and longtime political consultant] Stephanie Cutter because I’m more of an entertainment guy, I would have done more music if she wasn’t around. But I think what made it special was having real people be a part of it.”

After longtime political consultant Stephanie Cutter and Emmy-winning television producer Ricky Kirshner successfully pulled off the Democratic National Convention last August amid the coronavirus pandemic, the duo was tasked with producing this year’s inauguration during an even more fraught moment in time. By January 20, the day President Joe Biden was sworn into office, more than 400,000 Americans had died from the coronavirus. Just two weeks before the televised primetime inaugural event, “Celebrating America,” a mob of violent protesters stormed the Capitol in the name of former President Donald Trump — a deadly insurrection that left multiple people injured.
“We’re still fighting a very bitter election, so how do you celebrate America at that point?” Cutter says of producing the inauguration. “We made a decision we wanted to make it about celebrating the strength and perseverance of the American people, rather than celebrating a new president. That was very much in...

The inauguration television special “Celebrating America” was only about six weeks in the making. “We did election night, and people are calling me and going, ‘Okay, what are we doing for the inaugural?,’” producer Ricky Kirshner tells Variety. “I was like, ‘No one’s called me.’ It was cool that no one called me because I assumed that they were thinking about how they’re going to govern the country.”
But when the call came, planning began. With none of the traditional inaugural balls taking place, Kirshner and producer-director Glenn Weiss along with their team started with a blank slate that eventually turned into a 90-minute special hosted by Tom Hanks that attracted about 20 million viewers across ABC, NBC and CBS and the cable news networks, CNN and MSNBC.

The Big Three broadcast networks are mulling a roadblock special to air in primetime Jan. 20 celebrating the inauguration of Joe Biden as President of the United States and Kamala Harris as Vice President.
Multiple sources with knowledge of the situation tell Variety that the special would be 90 minutes to two hours in length and would be produced by Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner, the same team that handled the Democratic National Convention. Weiss is set to direct. The special would feature remote performances as well as other possible highlights such as an outdoor, ball-style “first dance” with Biden and soon-to-be-First Lady Jill Biden, and a fireworks display.
Names of possible talent to appear are not yet known, but one network source said they assumed that Weiss and Kirshner would have no problem delivering A-listers for the event, citing what is largely viewed as their successful work on the convention.

Joe Biden’s team announced new details for its plans for the presidential inauguration, which the president-elect already indicated would bear some similarities to the nearly all-virtual Democratic National Convention, reimagined because of Covid-19.
Stephanie Cutter and Ricky Kirshner, who spearheaded the convention plans, will serve as executive producers of the inaugural, with Rod O’Connor as senior adviser.
Biden’s Presidential Inaugural Committee also is urging the public not to travel to Washington, D.C. for the Jan. 20 event, and to “participate in the inaugural activities from home.”
Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will take the Oath of Office at the Capitol, but the ceremony’s “footprint will be extremely limited,” and the inaugural parade that follows will be “reimagined.” Construction crews already have been at work building the inaugural platform at the Capitol and the reviewing stand at the White House.

Director Davis Guggenheim is no stranger to shooting films for the Democratic National Convention, the “An Inconvenient Truth” helmer and Co-founder of Concordia Studio has worked on campaign biofilms as far back as 2008 with then-candidate Barack Obama.
He has since filmed segments for the 2012 and 2016 campaigns, but in 2020 things were different. There was a global pandemic and the Democratic National Convention was going virtual. Despite the remote complications that quarantine production schedule entailed, Guggenheim leapt at the chance. The director knew these short films were of the utmost importance.
In an exclusive conversation with Variety, Guggenheim discusses how imperative it was to show the authentic Joe Biden to American voters.
How early were you approached to come on board and make the short films?

Even in an election year without a pandemic, combining politics and music is a tricky proposition — but the Democratic National Convention, which begins tonight and runs through Thursday night, has assembled a lineup of (virtual) musical performances that is not only remarkably diverse, it also advances the party’s and presumptive candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ messaging in ways that are both subtle and overt.
More than half of the announced performers are people of color, including Common, Jennifer Hudson and recent Variety cover star John Legend. The music of all three performers is relatively family-friendly, but all have been outspoken in their support of Democratic-leaning causes. Also on board are the Chicks — who recently changed their name from the Dixie Chicks to avoid the Civil War-era connotations of the word “Dixie” — who were one of the top country acts in the world until singer Natalie Maines’ 2003 criticism of then-president George W.

You might liken it to “Crossfire” for the era of President Donald Trump.
Talent agency UTA has casually pitched MSNBC and CNN the idea of a new program featuring Trump confidant Anthony Scaramucci and anti-Trump attorney Michael Avenatti, according to a person familiar with the situation. No deal has been made, this person said, and there is no guarantee the concept will come to fruition. A show could not launch until after Avenatti dispenses with current client obligations, this person cautioned, including the case he has been pursuing on behalf of adult actress Stormy Daniels.
MSNBC declined to comment. UTA declined to comment. A CNN spokesperson could not be reached for immediate comment. The nascent effort to package the two figures was reported previously by The New York Times.

Obama Tuesday named his former Deputy Campaign Manager as a Member for the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities. “I am honored that these talented individuals have decided to join this Administration and serve our country. I look forward to working with them in the months and years to come,” said Obama in a statement announcing Cutter’s appointment and several others today. With the political consultant as one of its four rotating hosts, Crossfire came back after 8 years odd the air on September 9 this year with modest ratings. Looks like troubles come in threes for CNN lately. First the cable news company had its worst single primetime in over a year on October 30, then it had its worst week since Jeff Zucker took over and now the relaunched Crossfire has hit new lows. Resuscitated on September 9 after eight years off the air, the political debate show pulled in just 233,00 viewers overall and a mere 59,000 among adults 25-54 between 6:30 Pm and 7 Pm on Monday. Full-hour time-slot rivals on Fox News Channel and MSNBC did a lot better — to put it mildly. Fnc’s Special Report had 2.44 million viewers with 411,000 in the key news demo, while MSNBC’s Al Sharpton-hosted PoliticsNation had 707,000 total viewers and 170,000 among the 25-54s. Currently in a rebuilding phase after a precipitous slide from its former dominance of the cable-news world, CNN has been adding new on-air talent, such as former ABC News correspondent Jake Tapper, and is also reaching back into its past.
Last week, CNN revived the current-events/debate program "Crossfire," blending a long-running format with a roster of new faces. The daily 30-minute show features two hosts and guests each night, with the co-hosts also appearing across other CNN programming.
From 1982 until 2005, "Crossfire" was a mainstay of the network's daytime lineup, examining the news from the points of view of a politically liberal and a conservative pundit.
The first pairing was journalist and author Tom Braden ("Eight Is Enough") on the liberal side, and commentator, politician and broadcaster Pat Buchanan, as the conservative.

Back after eight years off the air, CNN’s Crossfire didn’t exactly set the ratings ablaze on Monday. With Wolf Blitzer’s interview with President Barack Obama on Syria as a lead-in, the Newt Gingrich and Stephanie Cutter-hosted half-hour show came in second among adults 25-54 and third in overall viewership against its cable news rivals. Between 6:30 Pm and 7 Pm, Jeff Zucker’s resuscitated political debate show pulled in 171,000 viewers in the demo and 581,000 overall. While better by 21% in the demo and 44% in total viewers than The Situation Room has done over the past four Mondays, Crossfire was way behind Fox News’ Special Report With Bret Baier in both categories. The Fnc show had 384,000 viewers among adults 25-54 and 2.4 million in overall viewers. While MSNBC’s Al Sharpton-hosted Politics Nation was behind the heavily promoted CNN show in the demo with 116,000, it was solidly ahead in total viewers with 617,000 watching.

CNN’s resuscitated Crossfire unveils tonight with former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and former Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter debating with Sen. The newly re-vamped “Crossfire” premieres tonight on CNN, and the political panel show probably couldn’t have asked for a better lead-in: Wolf Blitzer’s interview with President Obama. That should be the focus of the revamped show’s debut episode, as Senators Rand Paul and Bob Menendez will join hosts Newt Gingrich and Stephanie Cutter to discuss the day’s political news. Expect Obama’s interview with Blitzer (which is part of a day-long interview tour across several channels) to focus on Syria and whether or not the United States should intervene. In case you were wondering what the half-hour remake of CNN’s resuscitated Crossfire would sound/look like, two of its regulars – Stephanie Cutter on the left and S.E. Tapping into viewer interest that gets ginned up around the start of the broadcast network TV season, Jeff Zucker’s CNN announced this morning it’ll launch some of its most interesting new programs on Monday, September 16. That’s the week walking up to the start of the broadcast TV network’s official 2013-14 TV season, and a week in which some of the broadcasters’ new products are unveiling. CNN’s most anticipated new series, a half-hour remake of Crossfire, debuts that Monday, September 16 at 6:30 Pm Et – which, in one of those incredible coincidences, is the same night ABC launches the remake of its dance competition series Dancing With The Stars. It’s also the same night Fox unveils its remake of Washington Irvin’s The Legend of Sleep Hollow, in which Ichabod Crane is now a badass action hero, returned to save us from apocalypse. Similarly, this time Crossfire stars Newt Gingrich.
