As Martin Scorsese once said, “Music and cinema fit together naturally. Because there’s a kind of intrinsic musicality to the way moving images work when they’re put together. It’s been said that cinema and music are very close as art forms, and I think that’s true.” Indeed, the right piece of music–whether it’s an original score or a carefully selected song–can do wonders for a sequence, and today we’re looking at the 25 films that best expressed this notion this year.
From seasoned composers to accomplished musicians, as well as a smattering of soundtracks, each musical example perfectly transported us to the world of the film. Check out our rundown of the top 25, which includes streams to each soundtrack in full.

With “The Northman,” “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” and the continued success of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” this month has been about action-forward movies that are entertaining and worthy, but might fail to be taken seriously as real “achievements” in Hollywood. Timing has also proven to be an essential factor, and not just for releases, but for when a movie or performance starts gaining momentum.
Studios are only beginning to map out how to roll out their most promising contenders in the second half of the year. At this same point last year, most critics had seen the eventual best picture winner, “Coda” from Apple Original Films, after it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Obviously, we didn’t know how far it would go as “Belfast” and “The Power of the Dog” gained momentum. Timing and narratives are paramount, no matter where you think a film stands in the race.

Grab your (Nordic) weapons, it's time to luxuriate in the soundscape of Robert Eggers' epic Viking saga, "The Northman." The soundtrack for "The Northman" is currently streaming, and this 43-track album is meant to transport you to the Scandinavian countryside while installing a wide range of emotions within. Composers Robin Carolan and Sebastian Gainsborough have crafted a musical canvas that reflects the harsh, unforgiving world of "The Northman," and the pay-off is spectacular.
Check out the entire soundtrack for "The Northman" below.

There’s a touch of Tolkien to Robert Eggers’ latest, from mythical swords and entwined destinies to a final battle in the heart of a raging volcano. This isn’t a surprise, given Tolkien’s love for Norse mythology, and unsurprising too is the film’s passing resemblance to Ridley Scott’s revenge-fuelled Gladiator. But to compare The Northman to films past is to do it a disservice.
Eggers’ tale of brutal, Viking revenge stands alone, thrashing around in a phantasmagoric blur of rituals, bloodshed and mythology. Even if the story may feel well-worn, its execution is bold, visually expansive, and largely triumphant.
The story begins with the young prince Amleth (Oscar Novak) relishing in the return of his all-conquering father, King Aurvandil (Ethan Hawke) and battle-hardened uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang). It’s no real spoiler to say this happiness does not last, and Amleth is soon forced to flee for his life,...

Composers Robin Carolan (Tri Angle records) and Sebastian Gainsborough (Vessel) were given a task of epic proportions when director Rob Eggers asked them to create the soundtrack for his ambitious and highly anticipated new film The Northman, releasing on April 22nd via Back Lot Music and physically on July 1st via Sacred Bones Records. The Northman, Eggers action-filled epic, follows a young Viking prince on his quest to avenge his father’s murder and stars Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.
“Robert wanted the world of The Northman to feel harsh and uncomfortable, and for everything to feel like it was caked in mud and dry blood, so it was crucial for the score to mirror that” said the composers.
They needed to make a soundtrack that both honored the immense research that had gone into the authenticity of this Viking-era story...
