Filmmaker Ryan Coogler is a pioneer in many ways. While he shot to fame with his feature film debut Fruitvale Station which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, Coogler gained huge commercial popularity after he stepped on board to direct Marvel’s Black Panther. The film not only went on to win 3 Oscars, but also created a record by being the highest grossing film of all time by an African American director.

With other impressive films like 2015’s Creed and 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever under his belt, Coogler is seen as an inspiration for Black artists everywhere. In the latest news coming in, the filmmaker’s next project will be a musical based on legendary pop star Prince, another African American icon who paved the way for future generations of artists through his music.

You may have heard stories of how Marvel Studios has an ironclad rulebook that dictates what the stars of their project can or cannot say, but you might not know just how stringent they can really be with them. Actress Lupita Nyong’o, famous for playing the role of Nakia in the MCU’s Black Panther series, revealed that following those rules can be really stressful.
Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia in a still from Black Panther
In the past, when she was on the promotional tour of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she had to keep a close eye on what she said and think before she said it so as to not give out information that Disney didn’t want the fans to know.
She also revealed how she used to get an insane amount of e-mails reading the rules and policies surrounding the project’s information, which in the end became exhausting.

Director Ryan Coogler remains faithful to the original Marvel comics when adapting Black Panther into a solo superhero movie. However, when it comes to the sequel there is an issue surrounding a character, who only appears for less than two minutes on screen.
The character in question is Prince T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint. He is the son of Nakia and the late King T’Challa of Wakanda.

Marvel Studios‘ The Marvels is taking superhero fans higher, further, and faster thanks to the Captain Marvel sequel’s confidence, heart, slickly-directed action scenes, and more! Despite the film’s mediocre performance at the box office this past weekend, The Marvels is getting great word of mouth and boasts an Audience Score of 84% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. A highlight of the film is Iman Vellani’s silver screen debut as Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, teams up with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) to defeat Dar-Benn, a scorned leader of the Kree Empire. The flerken-filled sequel finds Kamala living her dream of fighting alongside her idol, Captain Marvel and leveling up as a valued member of the superhero community. I will spoil a thing or two about the film in the next paragraph, so steel yourselves or risk it all for some fantastic insight into...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses major plot developments and the post-credits scenes in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” currently playing in theaters.
By this point, it’s no secret that Marvel Studios has lost some of its luster in its post-“Avengers: Endgame” era. Between the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rapid expansion on Disney+ and the exits of stars like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson and the late Chadwick Boseman, the Marvel saga has often felt at once too much and not enough: Sprawl without a center.
It’s a problem that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is particularly ill-equipped to address. For one, the film is wholly disconnected from everything else that’s happened in the Marvel Cinematic Universe post-“Endgame” — there’s not a whisper of Kang or the multiverse or incursions or Talokan or, hilariously, Thor, even though the Guardians made a special...

New series ‘MPower’ on Disney+ Hotstar spotlight several of the MCU’s most inspirational women heroes. “Every hero has an epic origin story and so does this series,” said Executive Producer Justin W. Hochberg. “When I conceived ‘MPower’, I did it out of love for my teen daughter so she would have more icons to look up to, voices to learn from and role models to help her impact the world. Today, that vision is now a reality thanks to Brie Larsen, Elizabeth Olsen, the women of Wakanda and Zoë Saldaña, whose leadership was ‘Mpowering.’”
Saldaña is featured in episode four and serves as an Executive Producer of the series alongside Cisely and Mariel Saldana for Cinestar Pictures. “‘MPower’ is a tribute to women’s representation and empowerment,” she said. “We’re enthused to have the involvement of a diverse group of women whose voices and stories will serve as a source of inspiration.

Four years after “Black Panther” became the first Oscar-winning film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” cast member Angela Bassett has made history as the first person to achieve academy recognition for an MCU performance. Included among the numerous actors with whom she reunites in the 2022 sequel is Lupita Nyong’o, who first played her role of Nakia four years after earning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “12 Years a Slave.” If Bassett ends up prevailing in the same category this year, Nyong’o will be the 16th woman to have acted in a film that won the same Oscar she previously received.
Until this year, “12 Years a Slave” was the only acting Oscar-nominated film Nyong’o had appeared in. Two of her cast mates in the 2014 Best Picture winner – Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender – respectively competed for the male lead and supporting prizes but eventually...

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is here, and like any good Marvel Studios movie, it has a mid-credits scene that expands the story in new and exciting ways.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” follows the secret African nation as it deals with the loss of its king and protector T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), alongside the emergence of a brand new threat in the form of Namor (Tenoch Huerta), an ancient god from an undersea civilization. Namor wants to conquer the surface world and he wants Wakanda’s help. Otherwise, they’ll be the first on his list of places to wipe out. It’s up to T’Challa’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright), partner Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), mother Ramonda (Angela Bassett) and colleague Okoye (Danai Gurira) to figure out how to save their nation and deal with Namor, all while attempting to ordain a new Black Panther.

That final reveal in the film’s mid-credits sequence – that the legendary, late Black Panther had secretly fathered a son with Lupita Nyong’o and his collaborators were able to construct a satisfying superhero blockbuster that acknowledged and built that real-life pain into its storytelling is remarkable. That the movie sticks the landing so flawlessly makes it truly special.
It was a task no doubt made even more difficult by the online chatter in the build-up to the film’s release. When Marvel made the decision to have T’Challa die in the MCU, the reaction was mixed. On the one hand, it was understandable: Boseman was T’Challa. The thought of playing pretend...

Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is a visual feast, full of flying robotic suits, underwater warriors and next-level technological wonders. And one of the most eye-popping aspects of Ryan Coogler’s ambitious sequel are the next-level costumes by legendary designer Ruth E. Carter. Carter elevates the look of both Wakanda and the submerged kingdom of Talokan and sets the gold standard for costumes in superhero movies going forward. And we are so thrilled to debut an exclusive look at Carter’s costumes, which you can watch below.
The featurette allows you to luxuriate in the specificity of the costumes she had to create but also makes you appreciate the scope of what she had to do. It wasn’t just a new Black Panther costume, but it was outfitting all of the inhabitants of Talokan, creating a distinct look for a new, Iron Man-ish prodigy (Dominique Thorne’s Riri...

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" is coming to Disney+ on February 1, but you can revisit it before then in its written form. Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole's screenplay has now been released online via Deadline's "Read the Screenplay" series.
This version of the script is dated May 8, 2021, a few weeks before "Wakanda Forever" began filming. The screenplay has been pared down to match what ended up on screen, with some lines crossed out and deleted scenes omitted, but it's still an insightful read that offers unspoken character details in between the dialogue.
It's also interesting to see where choices were made to edit out certain lines in order to keep the story streamlined and stay true to the characters. For example, in the original script Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) contacts Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) after Shuri (Letitia Wright) is kidnapped and demands to know why they were attacked. In...

Director Ryan Coogler has revealed the story behind his original script for ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. The ‘Black Panther’ director, 36, said that he and fellow screenwriter Joe Robert Cole had planned to centre the sequel on Chadwick Boseman’s character T’Challa struggling to learn how to be a father, before Boseman’s death to colon cancer in 2020, reports People magazine.
He made the revelation in The New York Times interview. “It was going to be a father-son story from the perspective of a father, because the first movie had been a father-son story from the perspective of the sons,” Coogler said, noting that they had shared the script with Boseman in 2020.
According to People, Coogler said that they had to work around the idea of the “blip” which took place in Avengers: Infinity War and led to T’Challa and several other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) characters disappearing for five years.

Writer/director Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole sat down for an interview with “The New York Times” where they discussed the initial plans for what would become “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” In it, they revealed that the initial pitch was a post-Blip story featuring T’Challa (to be played by the late Chadwick Boseman) returning after a five-year absence and reconnecting with a son who had little-to-no memory of his biological father.
“T’Challa was a dad who’d had this forced five-year absence from his son’s life. You realize that he doesn’t know his dad was the Black Panther. He’s never met him, and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) is remarried to a Haitian dude. Then, we cut to reality and it’s the night that everybody comes back from the Blip. Ryan Coogler has revealed the complicated backstory on what his film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was supposed to be before the tragic death of the original film’s star, Chadwick Boseman.
Speaking to the New York Times, Coogler said the original intent was to make the film’s center about the relationship of fathers and sons. The struggle would have dealt with T’Challa’s five-year absence after “The Blip,” the Thanos-induced mass extermination that saw half the universe’s population reduced to dust, only to be brought back later.
The sequel still would have had Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner, as its villain. But T’Challa would have been tied to his love interest Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), who gave birth to a son, Toussaint, while he was away. Dealing with that new reality would have been the focus even as the Black Panther battled Namor.

Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death casts a long shadow over the story of this year’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” as the characters in the film struggle to move on from the in-universe passing of his character T’Challa. It’s a huge departure from Coogler’s initial vision for the sequel film, which would have had T’Challa alive and well — and struggling with fatherhood.

When Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever debuted in theaters, the film ensured there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. The beginning of the emotional Marvel sequel includes a proper funeral for King T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Wakanda’s former ruler and protector. The funeral sequence is extraordinarily moving and sets the tone for one of Marvel’s most mature films. I’m not ashamed to admit I cried twice while watching Shuri, Queen Ramonda, M’Baku, and the grief-stricken warriors of Wakanda bid their hero farewell. However, before Chadwick Boseman’s passing, Coogler had different ideas for the film’s opening salvo.

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," as it exists, will absolutely go down as a big hit, especially considering the downright terrible circumstances that the movie was made under. Not only did director Ryan Coogler have to coordinate filming in the midst of a pandemic, but he also had to so without Chadwick Boseman. The actor, who played T'Challa in the original "Black Panther," passed away in 2020, leaving the world without one of its biggest heroes. Coogler and Marvel Studios had to press on without him.
But what might have come of "Wakanda Forever" had Boseman lived to make the movie? In a new interview with the New York Times, Coogler has pulled back to the curtain to reveal the story they originally intended to film. First and foremost, the filmmaker explained that the original idea was to deal with the "Blip" from "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame," whereby Thanos dusted...

When cinematographer Autumn Durald Arkapaw was initially approached to join “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” she was already familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Arkapaw served as the cinematographer on the first season of the Marvel series “Loki” and scored one of the acclaimed show’s six Emmy Award nominations for her work. But “Wakanda Forever” presented a much greater challenge for Arkawpaw and “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler: a large-scale Marvel sequel that also reckoned with the death of star Chadwick Boseman and included intimate moments of mourning and unflinching depictions of grief.
“It was very important to Ryan to kind of have this fog or texture of grief that would be a throughline in the visuals and would be felt,” Arkapaw tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “I think it’s always important to listen to your director emotionally, and see what he or she wants to bring to the table,...

Originally, the Black Panther sequel was supposed to advance the story of Chadwick Boseman’s character, T’Challa. But, with Boseman’s untimely passing, writer/director Ryan Coogler gave a lot of thought to where the story should go instead. Ultimately, he decided that the Black Panther mantle should be passed down to T’Challa’s sister, Shuri. The new script built upon the first film’s depiction of strong female characters, Lupita Nyong’o told us, and took female empowerment to an entirely new level. Following the death of ‘Black Panther’ star Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Marvel Studios choose not to recast his titular role of T’Challa in the Oscar-winning 2018 superhero film’s new sequel, ‘Wakanda Forever.’ The Academy Award-nominated actor was set to reprise his role in the follow-up before his death. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has been a worldwide hit and moviegoers have found out that Letitia Wright’s Shuri is the new Black Panther.
The writers of the sequel are opening up about what other characters they thought of to assume the role of the superhero following Chadwick Boseman’s death.
“We would kick around the ideas, and try to extrapolate where the story goes and what’s the most impactful choice — what’s the best journey?” screenwriter Joe Robert Cole told Rolling Stone. “And where do you go after the film in terms of those characters. M’Baku certainly was someone that got kicked around a little bit.”
Cole explained that going with Shuri was an easier road as the character does become the new Black Panther in the Marvel comic books.
“Shuri is Black Panther and there’s a natural organicness, I guess is the best way to say it,...

Spoilers In This Article And Video Interview!
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” director and co-writer Ryan Coogler and co-writer Joe Robert Cole had to sit down and re-conceive the Marvel blockbuster in the wake of star Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death in the summer of 2020. A lot of their initial ideas remained in place. Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejia) and his undersea home of Talokan were always part of the “Black Panther” sequel script, as was the introduction of Riri Williams a.k.a. Ironheart (Dominque Thorne), and – most important – the reveal that T’Challa (Boseman) had a son with Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) who was kept hidden from public view.
“The previous draft, prior to Chadwick passing, his son was a part of that narrative. And so I think we knew we wanted young T’Challa to be revealed at some point within the film,” Cole tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview.
