For his feature film debut, UK director Joe Martin brazenly takes on the class divide of Britain in Us and Them, his crime thriller that follows a frustrated young man named Danny, played by Jack Roth, who takes out his anger on the wealthy and elite members of society by kidnapping a well-to-do family, which doesn’t go exactly as he planned.
While at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival, Daily Dead took a deep dive into the political and economical focus of Us and Them with both Martin and Roth, resulting in a fascinating discussion on the problems that have caused a great division both in the UK and the world at large.
Fantastic job on the film, guys. It has a lot to say and you put a lot of energy into some really serious issues we can all relate to.

Sunday’s episode of Where in the World Is Edith Crawley? Downton Abbey featured two engagements, a (brief) reunion of lovers and, sadly, the beginning of the end for a cherished — albeit ill-named — member of the Crawley family.

Downton Abbey, Season 4, Episode 7
Directed by Edward Hall
Written by Julian Fellowes
Airs Sundays at 9 Pm on PBS
Many resolutions came to fruition in last night’s episode of Downton Abbey, and on the whole, most of them are some of the most delightful of the season. There were homecomings, leave-takings, an offscreen death of a minor and unscrupulous character. Schemes were hatched, clues dropped, engagements broken, and new relationships budded.
Now that Edith has decided to keep her baby, there’s the issue of what to do with the child. It’s hard to deny the practicality of Rosamund’s plan to take Edith abroad and let a foreign couple adopt her offspring, but Edith’s fierce desire to stay part of her child’s life provides just another reminder of the heavily weighted “lose” column on the imbalanced scorecard tracking her happiness. Luckily, Edith finds another ally in her grandmother,...

Downton Abbey’s penultimate season 4 episode centered around a church bazaar held on the estate grounds, while relationship drama seemed to unfold everywhere.
'Downton Abbey Recap
Following Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Blake’s (Julian Ovenden) rescue of the estate’s pigs, the Crawley’s determine that Tim Drewe (Andrew Scarborough) will take up caring for their livestock. When the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) suggests that Blake would think it silly that they were hiring Drewe based on his family’s history of working their land, Mary takes to Blake’s defense. By the time she watches Blake lift up a crying George, she appears to be fully smitten. The Countess is not impressed.

Only one more episode after this week, "Downton Abbey" fans. How do you think everything will wrap up?
Upstairs
Mary's "desire of suitors" is back, enjoying the fun of the spring bazaar at the estate and, of course, fawning all over the most eligible bachelorette in York. Lord Gillingham has ended his engagement to Mabel and it seems he and Charles Blake are committed to trying to win Mary's heart. She's very upfront with them about not being ready yet and they're very respectful of one another, so it's fun to watch the three of them (as Lord Grantham calls them, "a menage") traipsing around the carnival.
Do you hope she chooses one of them in the finale next week? Or is this a storyline you'd like to see play out in Season 5?
Speaking of romances, Tom Branson has yet again encountered Sarah Bunting. She's a perfect fit for him -- she's political,...

Lord Grantham is still in America, ostensibly to help Lady Grantham’s brother Harold who has got himself involved in a little something called the Teapot Dome Scandal. But bigger scandals are brewing back at Downton Abbey, what with Lady Edith being pregnant out of wedlock and cousin Rose dating a black man. Both things are sort of a big deal in 1922.
Lady Grantham is blessedly in the dark about Edith and Rose. Instead, she dither because of the upcoming church bazaar. She really wants to put on a great show this year, so she spends much of the episode seeming to titter around but not accomplishing much, demonstrating an aura of working hard when really not which, incidentally, is how I survived a summer working at Walt Disney World. It’s a useful skill—cultivate it.

Downton Abbey, Season 4, Episode 6
Directed by Edward Hall
Written by Julian Fellowes
Airs Sundays at 9 Pm on PBS
Just last week, Violet accused her adversary, and sometimes friend, Isobel of “running on indignation.” It’s not very often Isobel’s spiteful side overshadows her more pleasant qualities, but her mission to humble the Countess brought out a streak of smugness in the Crawleys’ activist cousin. This week, Violet and viewers get a full dose of Isobel’s exhaustive source of compassion that restores her saintly reputation. It is another rare but not unwelcome moment of tenderness in the tumultuous relationship between these two catty old women. Isobel emerges the clear winner, because their interactions inevitably indicate a winner and a loser, and Violet once again has to swallow her considerable pride. Of course, there’s also a massive sense of relief by the end of the episode when Violet does not die.

Shocking, but true: Lady Mary got down and dirty on the Feb. 9 episode of Downton Abbey , but it was Rose and Edith who had far darker secrets to conceal. Here are seven of Sunday's more memorable quotes, as the passive-aggressive Downton drama unfolded: 1. While Mary and Mr. Blake revealed an instant, though superficially courteous, dislike for each other, things quickly heated up as Blake soon realized that Mary isn't just another aloof aristocrat. When the two went to inspect the estate's newly arrived pigs, he realizes the poor animals are dehydrated and on the verge of dying. When he suggests...

A telegram arrives in the morning post. Lord Grantham’s mother-in-law is demanding his presence in support of his brother-in-law Harold, who has got himself into some kind of kerfuffle over in the colonies. Lord Grantham is not sure what he can do to help matters, but apparently Martha has astral projected herself into the future and has already witnessed that Lord Grantham’s presence is vital to Harold’s cause. Lordy prepares to depart for New York immediately, which is apparently something like old York, only with less alcohol and way too many Americans.
Ahh, but this causes a problem downstairs. Bates refuses to leave Anna’s side, but surely Lord Grantham will want his valet with him in New York. Anna bravely tells him to go, but another round of hallway crying clearly indicates she’s too fragile for Bates to depart now. What can be done? Why,...

While an estimated 111.5 million viewers watched the Seattle Seahawks pulverize the Denver Broncos on Fox on Sunday (up from last year’s 109 million Super Bowl viewers) , 6.8 million viewers opted instead to watch some actual drama over on PBS’s Downton Abbey – celebrating its third consecutive year as The Show That Did Best Against The Super Bowl. According to Nielsen early stats, Downton’s 6.8 million viewers is a 3% climb compared to last year’s 6.6 million opposite the Super Bowl. This is no surprise, given the washout-ed-ness of yesterday’s football game, and the been-there-done-that-ed-ness of the Super Bowl ads — versus the high drama of the Downton episode — Spoiler Alert — in which a big surprise birthday party was thrown for Robert, Edith found out she’s pregnant, Lady Mary caught Rose kissing Jack Ross, and the downstairs staff said good-bye to Alfred! As late as 2011, 23% of Mississippi voters thought that interracial relationships should be illegal. That’s an important (and disturbing) number to remember on the heels of last night’s Downton Abbey, where the attraction between Lady Rose (Lily James) and bandleader Jack Ross (Gary Carr) found a spotlight during a party before finding a dark corner downstairs. Essentially, a quarter of viewers in Mississippi might have had the same venomous response to Ross’ presence as a few characters who are meant to portray attitudes from ninety years ago. Probably not too surprising considering the invective that’s hurled online toward our President on a daily basis. If the leader of the free world can’t catch a break regarding his skin color, why should a croony jazz man trying to woo a ward of Downton get one? Knowing that Britain and the United States have different timelines regarding slavery and suffrage, it...

Spoiler alert: Stop reading if you don’t want to know what happened on the special Super Bowl episode of ‘Downton Abbey.’ (Just kidding. What’s football?)
I suppose I should expect it at this point, but can nothing go right for Edith (Laura Carmichael)? The Meg Griffin of the Crawley family got quite a shock — though not one we didn’t see coming — on Downton Abbey‘s Feb. 2 episode, and her life will never be the same again.
I’m talking, of course, about her pregnancy, which couldn’t come at a worse time, and not just because she’s unmarried. Michael Gregson has gone completely Awol, and Edith is half convinced he’s dead!
Leave it to Edith: She finally finds a suitable man to marry her — and by “suitable,” I mean he’s in the process of divorcing his wife, who is a vegetable — only to end up pregnant and dumped.

Lady Isobel and Lady Violet went head to head while Edith found out she's pregnant and Rose had a dalliance with the black jazz singer in Downton Abbey.
Evelyn Napier (Brendan Patricks) has returned to Downton with a new man, Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden), in tow. Charles reveals to Mary (Michelle Dockery) that the duo are not there to study and preserve old estates, but to study how the fall of English aristocracy will impact food supply. Mary is furious and thus Charles and Mary find themselves at odds.
Edith (Laura Carmichael) receives a note from her doctor informing her that she is pregnant. The father, Michael Gregson, is nowhere to be found, and Edith could find herself an unwed mother. In other family drama, Lady Violet (Maggie Smith) and Mrs. Crawley (Penelope Wilton) had a verbal spat after the Dowager Countess accused the boy gardener, John, of stealing things from her study.

It's Lord Grantham's birthday this week on "Downton Abbey" and Lady Rose, the resident party girl of the manor, has taken it upon herself to plan a party for him -- which means the return of cute bandleader Jack Ross (guest star Gary Carr).
Upstairs
The birthday party goes off without a hitch, though Rose's hiring of Jack Ross' band to play for the evening certainly raises a few eyebrows. Luckily, no one is as ugly as the time he danced with her at the jazz club, though Carson is pretty funny this episode. He reminds us of how sometimes old people think they're being really progressive, when in actuality they're still being a little racist. Baby steps, though.

Breakfast downstairs begins with a somber mood. Anna is barely keeping it together. Bates does not understand what is going on with his wife, but he is clearly concerned. Mrs. Hughes stares daggers at the odious Mr. Green, though I wish she was doing more with those daggers than staring. You know the whole group must be off their blood sausages when it is up to sulky Thomas to wonder why everyone seems so “Downton crabby.” Carson, ever the fount of radiant light, suggests that “There’s something foreign about high spirits at breakfast” anyway. Carson also believes that “high spirits” are foreign at lunch time, in mid-afternoon, during dinner, in the evening, at night, and before, during, or immediately after coitus. In fact, I’m pretty sure the only time Carson approves of “high spirits” is at 1:47pm on a Tuesday, and only if it’s not Lent.

Mary was blindsided by four little words on this week’s ‘Downton Abbey.’
After hitting it off swimmingly last week, Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Tony (Tom Cullen) continued Operation: Replace Matthew on the Jan. 19 episode of Downton Abbey. There was laughter, there was dancing and there was… a proposal?!

On the latest episode of "Downton Abbey," someone gets a proposal and someone else gets a swift kick out the door, plus Lady Edith has a wild night.
Upstairs
Most of the Crawley family sets off for London to meet with some tax attorneys because Lord Grantham still stubbornly wants to sell off part of the estate to pay Matthew's death tax, while Lady Mary thinks they can figure out a payment plan and keep the estate intact.
While there, Sir John Bullock takes everyone out to a jazz club and makes a scene with Lady Rose after having too much to drink. When bandleader Jack Ross rides to her rescue, Lady Rose is smitten -- much to the consternation of everyone else (especially Aunt Rosamund) because Ross is black. Something tells us, however, that this is not the last we've seen of Jack Ross.
Meanwhile, Lady Mary receives a proposal from Lord Gillingham.

This week, we finally got to meet the first black character on Downton Abbey. His name is Jack Ross. He’s a handsome singer. And based on the way he treated Rose when her escort, Sir John Bullock, dashed off the Lotus Club dance floor to drunk-vomit, he’s also considerate, suave, and respectful. So naturally, he scares the shit out of Lady Rosamund.“Oh, Mary,” Rosamund gasped when she spotted the man dancing — in public, where others can see! — with her lily-white relative. Immediately, like a Navy Seal on a rescue mission, Tom was sent in to extract Rose from the situation while everyone looked horrified and will probably continue to look horrified when Jack (played by British actor Gary Carr) shows up in future episodes of season four. From the viewpoint of Downton Abbey audiences living in 2014, the response to Jack was totally ridiculous. (Truly, when Rosamund uttered...

Gary Carr has suggested that the door is open for him to return to Downton Abbey.
The Death in Paradise star played jazz musician Jack Ross in the ITV period drama's fourth series.
"[Jack coming back] wasn't talked about, but at the same time, it's open," Carr told Digital Spy
Jack originally departed the show after ending his romance with Rose (Lily James) over concerns that society would not accept their inter-racial relationship.
"He does say goodbye at the end of that series, but he does love her so that would be a good reason to come back," Carr hinted. "If I was asked to come back, I wouldn't say no."
The 27-year-old actor also admitted that he "wasn't surprised at all" by the strong reaction to his character in the media.
"It's a big deal that he's the first black character," Carr said. "It's not a big deal for me but it's a big deal for audiences.

Downton Abbey commenced last night’s episode with honored guests making their arrival for a party at the British estate. Among the guests is Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen), who brings along his valet Green (Nigel Harman).
Lord Gillingham & Lady Mary
The affable Lord Gillingham, who’s single – unless you count the woman he’s courting – does his best to win over Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery). If his first attempt is any indication, he’s going to need some help. After telling Mary he has no wife or children, he asks, “What about you?” Remembering her husband Matthew Crawley’s (Dan Stevens) death, he adds, “I just wasn’t thinking. Please forgive.”
Things take a positive turn for Gillingham when only he and Mary end up going horseback riding. Mary opens up in the alone time, telling her childhood friend about the many ways in which her late husband changed her.

British actor Tom Cullen was tapped to fill the rather large shoes of Dan Stevens, stepping into the role of playing opposite Michelle Dockery’s Lady Mary on hit period drama Downton Abbey.
Downton Abbey's Tom Cullen
When Matthew Crawley met his end in a tragic car accident, it opened the door for a new man to get close to Lady Mary – after a period of mourning, of course. With roughly a year since Matthew’s passing and Lady Mary exchanging her blacks for a purple dress last episode, it might be time for Cullen’s Lord Gillingham to make his move.
While Cullen is an unfamiliar face for Downton Abbey’s stateside fans, he’s rather well known over in the U.K. His breakthrough role was in 2011, portraying a gay man in the critically acclaimed feature film Weekend. Prior to landing the role on Downton, Cullen’s...

Downton Abbey returned from last season’s tear fest with Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) still recovering from Matthew’s (Dan Stevens) fatal celebratory drive after the birth of their firstborn son.
'Downton Abbey' Recap
Upstairs, Isobel (Penelope Wilton), like Mary, grieves for Matthew. Robert (Hugh Bonneville), however, seems almost glad that Mary’s husband and potential future head of the English estate is out of the picture. His wife Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), meanwhile, is preoccupied with finding a new maid in light of O’Brien’s (Siobhan Finneran) departure to India with Lady Flintshire.
In the servants’ area downstairs there’s still trouble brewing in the four-pointed love story involving Alfred (Matt Milne), Ivy (Cara Theobold), Jimmy (Ed Speleers) and Daisy (Sophie McShera). Thomas (Rob James-Collier) has made it his mission to drum up as much drama between the foursome as possible, causing concern for Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol). Meanwhile,...

"Downton Abbey" has quite a few new faces gracing the grounds of everyone's favorite British estate in the upcoming fourth season. Zap2it is here with a handy reference guide as a fun sneak peek, but be warned -- small spoilers ahead, so don't keep reading if you want to remain entirely spoiler-free.
Lady Mary's suitors
Pictured above, left, is Tom Cullen as Lord Gillingham (Anthony Foyle) and Julian Ovenden, right, as Charles Blake. With Matthew gone, Mary is of course deeply grieving for her lost love. But that doesn't mean she's destined to be an old maid now. Both of these dashing men will be crossing paths with Mary -- but which path will she be interested in following, if any?
Jack Ross
At left is Gary Carr as Jack Ross, a singer, musician and bandleader for a local jazz ensemble. If you've got eyes, you can see that he's quite the handsome fellow.

Give the Grim Reaper a hand – he was the Mvp of Downton Abbey's third season. When actors Dan Stevens and Jessica Brown Findlay decided to depart the BBC series that became PBS's prestige production here in the States, all hell broke loose – particularly when Stevens' pivotal character Matthew Crawley met his demise in a car crash during the final episode's final minute. Could a show like Downton, its appeal based so directly on painting an appealing portrait of a bygone era even while gently portraying its passing, survive the...

It was all about the couples on the Season 4 finale of "Downton Abbey." Don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled.
Upstairs
Both of Lady Mary's suitors are back (her "desire of suitors," as Lady Cora says), with Gillingham have called off his engagement to Mabel. These two men have created such an interesting dynamic at the estate when they are there at the same time. As Lord Grantham wonders, "What kind of menage do they have going on?"
And Mary's not leading them on, per se, she's very up front about how she's not ready for a romance -- but it's kind of cute to see how flattered Mary is by the attention. And both of the men are utterly respectful of each other, which is also nice to see.

The Season 4 finale of "Downton Abbey" airs this Sunday, Nov. 10 in the U.K. and we're here with some juicy details. But be warned -- don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled.
Above, Lady Rose tells Lady Mary that she intends to marry Jack Ross and she doesn't care who knows it -- but it also sounds as though she's planning on using the news to shock her mother, with whom we know she does not get along. Hmm. We hope Jack is not being used merely for that purpose, he seems such a lovely fellow.
In the latest Season 4 pictures, it looks as though Downton is playing host to a delightful party -- and Tom's political lady is in attendance. Is there love in the air?
The episode description also has us asking some questions. It reads:

Review Louisa Mellor 4 Nov 2013 - 12:03
It was all pigs, pregnancy and international passage on this week’s episode of Downton Abbey…
This review contains spoilers.
Picking up where Grange Hill left off, Downton Abbey’s fourth run has been the series of Big Social Themes. First there was rape, then there was race, and now comes abortion (not that, in keeping with the English tradition of linguistic whitewashing, any of those three words have yet been uttered on screen). This week saw the return of Anna’s attacker, Lady Rose snogging Jack Ross on the Thames, and Lady Edith pull a Juno by fleeing the abortion clinic and deciding to continue with her socially unacceptable pregnancy.
Jollying up the heaviness of all that was this week’s really big news: the pigs are here! But what’s this? Some of them are dying of thirst? Hey, ITV, that wasn’t the deal.

Plus, Edith gives into temptation — and is that Tom kissing a mystery woman? So much scandal, so little time.
The new season of Downton Abbey is already underway in the UK, but we’ve still got a few months before the Crawley family’s fourth season arrives stateside. In anticipation of the Jan. 5 premiere, PBS has released a 30-second teaser of the drama to come — and there’s plenty of it!
Highlights include: the Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) attempting to life Mary (Michelle Dockery) out of her dead-husband rut; Anna (Joanne Froggatt) getting her sass on, as well; Edith (Laura Carmichael) giving into temptation with her married suitor; Rose (Lily James) dancing with the show’s first black character, Jack Ross (Gary Carr); and, most shockingly, Tom (Allen Leech) in the arms of a mystery woman!

Elsewhere in this week's programme, romance blossoms as Lady Rose (Lily James) and jazz singer Jack Ross enjoy a boat ride together.

"Downton Abbey" Season 4 has almost come to a close in the U.K. -- only two more episodes left before the annual Christmas special that will air Dec. 25. Below is the info for episode 7, but don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled.

Cora's playboy brother Harold is in a fix and Robert must travel to America to help bail him out, whilst a new farming venture at Downton sees Blake and Mary forced to put aside their differences.
When Violet is taken ill she finds help comes from an unlikely corner.
With romantic tensions causing disharmony downstairs, things don't quite go to plan when Mrs Hughes, Mrs Patmore and Carson conspire to keep the peace.

Lord Grantham's birthday party goes off without a hitch -- well, almost, on the latest episode of "Downton Abbey." Don't keep reading if you don't want to be spoiled.
Upstairs
Evelyn Napier and Charles Blake arrive. They're studying landed estates and whether or not they can continue in the current climate. Blake is of the opinion that they have no place anymore and Lady Mary bristles at his attitude, being delightfully sharp with him.
This is a romance we can perhaps get behind, as long as they don't rush it. Lady Mary is always at her best when she's being smart and biting (she's much like Granny Violet that way), so their tension is fun. It's reminiscent of her and Matthew, without being a retread of that plot.
Meanwhile, Cousin Isobel is running around like a combination of Sarah Bernhardt and Miss Marple, solving the case of the missing letter opener for Lady Violet.

There’s a surprise at the Abbey (but still no Paul Giamatti) in this week’s gentle, enjoyable episode…
This review contains spoilers.
In the end stages of any faltering relationship, when it’s all but dead and buried and the mental dividing-up of belongings has begun, a destabilising flash of what first brought you together can blow in from nowhere. Are we making a mistake, you think, chucking all this in? We used to be good together, didn’t we. Didn’t we?
This week’s Downton Abbey was just that sunny moment, a visitor from days past whose reappearance reminded us why we were so keen to wrap Downton’s cosy duvet around ourselves in the first place. It was so stuffed with familiar old standards - the Crawleys being confronted by the twentieth century, Violet and Isobel butting heads, a scandal brewing at the Abbey,...

Downton Abbey heads towards its fourth series conclusion this weekend, and the second big party of the series will dominate events in the period drama.
A surprise party for Robert (Hugh Bonneville) will be the primary source of activity, however, Lady Rose's (Lily James) secret plans for the occasion may cause some discontent.
Watch a preview of this weekend's episode below:
Lady Rose has to get Mrs Hughes (Phyllis Logan) to keep her plans for Jack Ross's (Gary Carr) band's arrival at the Abbey under wraps, and the servant reluctantly agrees to help.
It wouldn't be Downton Abbey without a twist, and Thomas's (Rob James-Collier) snooping on Lady Rose and Mrs Hughes could potentially have damaging consequences for all involved.

Upstairs
In the aftermath of the party, it's time to face the music about the tax man, with Lady Mary wanting to find out about a payment plan and Lord Grantham still wanting to sell off pieces of their land.
On the trip to London to see the tax people, Lady Rose tags along and Sir John Bullock takes them all out to a jazz club.
