Look, we all know that The Judges' Save is a crapshoot. Yes, it got us more quirky musicality from Casey Abrams and it allowed Jessica Sanchez to make it to the Finals, but how much gratitude should we show an innovation that also prolonged the "Idol" lives of Matt Giraud and Michael Lynche? I guess we should feel lucky that Sam Woolf has survived to participate in a theme that I'm sure is near-and-dear to his heart: '80s Night. Sam isn't the only "Idol" Finalist with a sketchy connection to the '80s. Actually, the total number of remaining contestants who drew breath in the '80s is a resounding "zero." So... This is gonna be fun! 8:00 p.m. Et. We begin with a reminder of last week's "drama," which strongly suggests that if Sam had gone home, this would be '70s Week. This week featured David Cook as a mentor.

Poor Sam Woolf. He received the lowest number of votes Thursday night and wound up being saved by the "American Idol" judges in a dramatic confetti shower that's usually reserved for the season's ultimate winner. But while Sam is busy celebrating his second chance victory, it's time for a reality check: Ever since the Judges' Save was introduced in Season Eight, no one that's been saved has gone on to win the show. -Break- Prior to Sam, a total of four singers were saved from the execution chamber. In Season 8, Matt Giraud was saved in Top 7 Week and was then eliminated for good two weeks later. In Season 9, Michael Lynche was saved in Top 9 Week and wound up lasting five more weeks. In Season 10, Casey Abrams was saved in Top 11 Week and was then eliminated five weeks later. And in Season 11, Jessica Sanchez was saved in Top 7 Week and made...

There are four weeks and four contestants left on Season 12 of American Idol — but it won’t be the Judges’ Save that prevents the competiton from ending before the scheduled May 16 finale.

I know there’ve been a lot of criticisms of American Idol Season 12, but none of its results shows up till now have driven me into a homicidal rage. (Okay, Breanna Steer not cracking the Top 10 came pretty close, but we haven’t had a moment where I’ve been on the brink of spouting “That’S It! I’M Done With This Show 4Eva!” nonsense.)
And I guess that’s why I approached Top 7 Results Night with a mixture of paranoia and dread. Okay, yeah, Lazaro Arbos got saddled with the most ominous lyric from the group performance of...

I watch American Idol for one thing and one thing only, and that's the sight of arrogant young men crying near Ryan Seacrest. I basically got a Trainspotting-sized injection of that sweet fix during Thursday night's solo round show, because there were tears, sniffles, anxieties, and sobs galore. Some were crocodile tears, as the astute barrister Nicki Minaj noted, but every salty drop was nonetheless a spectacle of drama king camp. Mmmmm. My absolute favorite.
The judges pared down the list of competing dudes to 28, and these five contestants were my five top selections of the evening. Grab your hanky, wave it in the air, and then cry into it, because this quintet is one weepy bunch of winners. Miss America-style.
5. Charlie Askew, "Somebody That I Used to Know"
First of all, I'm pretty sure that "Charlie Askew" is the cabaret name of Fran Lebowitz, because I'm getting major Public Speaking vibes from this child.

The ensemble for Bombshell, Smash‘s musical-within-a-show, is set to swell based on these casting calls for not one or two but three new series regulars being added for Season 2.
For starters, NBC’s musical drama is looking to cast the role of Courtney, an African-American chorus member in her mid- to late-20s who packs a powerhouse voice. There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

If there was a doctor in the house during Tuesday night’s American Idol telecast, he or she really should’ve rushed the stage at the 1:22 marker and called the official time of death for criticism. First, the good news for Casey Abrams. Even if voters are on the fence about the emotional bass player, the judges clearly love him and were unequivocal in deploying their once-a-season save on Thursday night's "American Idol."
Now, the bad news: It's probably still not enough to carry him to the winner's circle. If "Idol" history is any indication, the save is mostly a postponement of the inevitable. It helped season eight's Matt Giraud (a wild-card pick to begin with) when he faced elimination in the top seven, but did him no good when he was booted just two weeks later in the top five. Fast-forward to last season, when Michael Lynche faced the chopping block in week nine. The judges busted out the save again, which kept...

The picking out of semifinalists on American Idol has to be the most agonizing episode to watch. On one hand, I want to see everyone's reaction. On the other, did we really need to take two hours to tell people yes and no?
Every year, it seems the producers try to outdo themselves in making the contestants travel to and from their final judgment. It's gone from a room, to a mansion, and this year is in the nicest looking airplane hangar I've ever seen. (I'm a military brat, so I've seen quite a few.) What's next year going to be? Will the contestants have to take a small boat to a remote island?
This is a fairly straight-forward episode, so I'm going to go down the line, just as Idol did. (Although I promise to try and keep my word count down.)

Paul McDonald performs on "American Idol" Wednesday

The coolest contestant of season 10's "American Idol" has stepped out in the form of Paul McDonald.
The 25-year-old from Nashville, Tennessee, was voted through to the "Idol" top 24 on Wednesday's (February 23) episode, and his laid-back, easygoing style makes him an early standout among the semi-finalists.
The scruffy-bearded McDonald, who auditioned for "Idol" in his hometown of Nashville, was first seen on Wednesday singing the Beatles' "Blackbird" during the Las Vegas round with his duet partner Kendra Chantelle. McDonald's smooth vocals — which have sort of a Jason Mraz-meets-Mike Posner quality — caused judge Steven Tyler to exclaim, "Yeah! I love his voice," mid-song, while Jennifer Lopez turned to Tyler to show him the goose bumps on her arm. Lopez later praised McDonald's "soft,...

Hollywood Week continued on "American Idol" Thursday night, as the remaining 100 contestants performed solo numbers in hopes of becoming America's "next top adult contemporary star."

There are too many from this season.
We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
We've looked back at Season 1 (yay Kelly!), Season 2 (aww, Clay and Ruben!), the black hole that was Season 3, one of our favorite Top 2 in Season 4, and Soul Patrol-ed Season 5. We took a look back at beatboxin' Season 6 and the David vs. David finale of Season 7.
Season 8 contestants in order of elimination:
Jasmine Murray
Jorge Nunez
Alexis Grace
Michael Sarver
Megan Joy
Scott MacIntyre
Lil Rounds
Anoop Desai
Matt Giraud
Allison Iraheta
Danny Gokey
Adam Lambert

If you're like us, you just watched the premiere of the 10th season of "American Idol" and marveled at the arrival of new judges Jennifer Lopez and (especially) Steven Tyler. But while the show was more focused on the idea of all these new faces, the real question on the minds of the millions of people watching has been "Does 'American Idol' work without Simon Cowell?" The cantankerous Brit has been the show's guiding force and the anchor at the judges' table for the entirety of its existence, but without his cutting insights, honest opinions and unadulterated bile, will the show ever be the same again no matter what the new judges do?
We decided to ask just that question in the special livestreaming presentation of "Judging the Judges: An 'Idol' Without Simon," which goes live at 10 p.m. Eastern. "American Idol" expert Jim Cantiello will...

Prickly departing judge Simon Cowell showed his teddy bear side when he heard of a 12-year-old cancer patient named Megan Kershaw. Her wish list includes meeting him and going to Disney World, so he made that happen. [Daily Mirror]
Matt Giraud has a new single out. It's titled "Thank You" and is a collaboration with songwriter and pianist Jim Brickman, who has previously worked with artists like Michael W. Smith, Martina McBride and Lady Antebellum. [Mj's Big Blog]
Sources inside the "Idol" camp are reporting that the new choice of judges is pretty reckless -- there will be no test-runs to see if the judges have good chemistry. This runs contrary to how much Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell were vetted in order to see if they got along. [TMZ]
Casey James, Tim Urban and Lee DeWyze talk about "Idol" Season 9 tour stop in Dallas.

Could You see Matt starring in the smash Broadway hit? We totally could!
Jordin Sparks, Clay Aiken and Fantasia Barrino are just a few of the former American Idol contestants who have gone on to star in Huge Broadway shows, so naturally we had to ask season seven finalist Matt Giraud if the Great White Way was in his future, too! “Maybe if I could do Wicked,” Matt told HollywoodLife.com exclusively May 26 at the American Idol season nine finale in Hollywood. He even sang us a line from the show, which you casting directors should Seriously have a listen to. Check out our video interview with Matt for a taste of what he’d sound like on Broadway (here’s a hint: he’d be awesome!)...

So let’s just call this thing: Crystal killed it, and Lee kinda choked. Having discussed last night’s American Idol finale performance night with EW.com’s preeminent Idoloonie Michael Slezak, I know that was also his assessment of the evening from the vantage point of his living room couch. From my seat inside the IdolDeathStar — a.k.a. the Nokia Theater La Live — the difference between Crystal’s often effortless excellence and Lee’s unfocused striving was even more stark. I don’t think I’ve experienced an Idol finale, on TV or in person, this lopsidedly obvious...

After 43 episodes (and 54 hours you'll never ever get back), the ninth season of "American Idol" is finally down to just two. And I'm live-blogging every last second of it. (Although, not literally every second because that would be quite cumbersome. And boring.)
Will it be Crystal Bowersox, a dread-sportin' diabetes-havin' mother who's doing it all for her adorable baby (who I insist on calling Jack Bowersox)? Or will it be Lee DeWyze, a paint salesman from Mt. Pleasant, Illinois who was kicked out of school for behavior problems and who now loves wearing gray jackets and crying in front of large groups of people?
For a season that has been short on the drama, this week's finale is a bit of a nailbiter. While Crystal was the early stand-out who maintained her lead for most of the season, lately she's been stumbling with poor song choices. Lee always had the...

American Idol judge Simon Cowell has admitted that his final night on the show will be “emotional”.
The music mogul won’t be returning for next year’s season of Idol, as he wants to concentrate on launching his own American version of The X Factor.
Speaking on The Oprah Winfrey Show, he said: “The final night will be quite emotional. I’ve had a great time. I love working over here [in the Us] and never thought I would.”
On who should replace him, Simon insists that it should be someone that “actually knows what they’re talking about”.
“Everyone’s talking about casting a nasty person or getting another Brit,” he explained. “If we were judging the ice skating Olympics, you wouldn’t have somebody on who’s obnoxious, you’d have somebody who knows the difference between a ten, a nine and an eight. I think, to a point, you...

"American Idol" voters eliminated Michael Lynche back in the top nine, but the judges swooped in to save the burly R&B crooner. Then a funny thing happened: Big Mike lasted five more weeks, apparently winning over a few more voters after his near-exit.
His run ended, however, after a Movie Night performance of Michael Jackson's "Free Willy" anthem "Will You Be There." We caught up with the 26-year-old dad to talk about the judges' save and his Hollywood Week dilemma.
Q: What was your mind-set before the elimination announcement? Were you expecting to go home, or were you surprised?
Michael Lynche: Not surprised and not expected. I just think America's a fickle creature, and she's shown that as the competition has gone on.

Watching "Songs of the Cinema" night on "American Idol" was a lot like eating a large popcorn at the movies. Some of the kernels were close to perfect, with salty flavor and crispness balanced perfectly (Crystal). Others were stale, as if the concession workers had just dumped a new batch on top of one that had been sitting around since the theatrical run of "Kindergarten Cop" (Lee). And others were inexplicably soggy, which totally makes you gag 'cause Lord knows you didn't order any butter (Michael). (If Aaron was still on the show, I'd also talk about the kernels that were too young to pop.) And when the end credits rolled, you felt so bloated you regretted buying popcorn to begin with.

Normal 0 Three Men and a Bowersox. It's been five long months on American Idol and that's all that remains.
Casey James, Michael Lynche, Lee DewYze, and Crystal Bowersox continue the fight on this week's "Songs of Cinema" edition of American Idol. Their mentor, fittingly enough, is singer/actor Jamie Foxx who combined music and movie magic to earn himself an Academy Award for his performance in Ray. If he could pass on some of his knowledge he may be able to Jennifer Hudsonize this bunch.
However if there is any weight to Crystal Bowersox's tweet, in which she mentioned the contestants performing duets like last season, then Jamie Foxx' judgment may have to be amended (unless of course you enjoyed his auto-tune infested pairing with T-Pain). Also to add to the damage, the song list (despite the update to the even lamer original list) is pretty weak. Is...

After making a concerted effort to remain current, "American Idol" turns to the past this week with a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Modern day crooner Harry Connick, Jr. serves as the mentor and guide through Frank's world. It's not the first time the "American Idol" contestants will try to channel some Rat Pack vibes, as a handful of competitors have tackled tunes and the eighth season featured an entire week devoted to the Rat Pack (where Alison Iraheta famously delivered her excellent "Someone to Watch Over Me").
We won't know what the five remaining season nine finalists will break out on Tuesday night's (May 4) episode of the show, but here's what the all-time competition looks like.
Katherine McPhee, "Someone to Watch Over Me"
It's a song written by the Gershwins and probably made more popular by Ella Fitzgerald, but McPhee nailed the song so perfectly that Frank would have certainly been proud.

This week the Top 5 are tasked with singing the oh-so current songs of Frank Sinatra. To seemingly guarantee that the Top 5 sound old-fashioned, the American Idol powers that be have banned guitars in favor of big band backing. Because nothing says current like old-school standards with big band orchestration.
I'm a big Frank fan myself, but in a season that has been plagued by critiques of contestants not seeming "current" or "contemporary" enough, the songs of Sinatra seem a misguided theme at best. However misguided, it is the theme for the week and we've chosen the songs we think best suit the remaining five contestants.
First and foremost, Frank Sinatra songs no one should sing this week: "Someone to Watch Over Me" (done by Katharine McPhee and Alison Iraheta) and "My Funny Valentine" (done by Melinda Doolittle and Matt Giraud). Both have been done well and multiple times on the American Idol stage.

Simon Cowell’s mum Julie has gotten stuck in La due to the closure of British airspace.
The majority of flights in and out of Britain were cancelled this week, because of a drifting cloud of volcanic ash. The move meant that 82 year old Julie Cowell has been stranded in her son’s La mansion. We’re not feeling too much sympathy for the pensioner!
A Bgt source told The Mirror: “At least Julie and Mezhgan will know each other really well if flight restrictions carry on.”

" I think Adam Lambert just won season 9." That was a tweet from a viewer after Wednesday night's American Idol (TV), one of many as Twitter went aflutter with comments about Adam Lambert's return to the American Idol stage. He performed his hit single "Whatya Want From Me" with a new arrangement complete with green laser beams, a bitchin' leather jacket, and an Elvis up-do. True to Lambert form, he proceeded to give the Idol audience a micro-burst of vocal intensity, then salted it with a visual display of interstellar eye candy. "I wanted to do something different," he said. Surprise. Another viewer tweeted the question "When was Adam Lambert's last blood test. Are we sure he's human?" Let's assume he is, and go with the premise that he likes to entertain, and yes, perhaps shock a few people from time to time. The buzz was circulating on set...

Michael Lynche caught a big break this week when the "American Idol" judges used their second-ever save to keep him in the competition. This got us thinking about other reality-show second chances, including Speidi on "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" and Chris March from "Project Runway," but my personal favorite was left out. While Matt Giraud received the inaugural judges' save last year, he wasn't the first comeback kid on "Idol."
No, that title belongs to Nikko Smith, the season four R&B crooner who was voted off only to be invited back to the competition when Mario Vazquez made the brilliant decision to pursue bigger opportunities and opt out of "Idol." (How's that working out, Mario?) Smith was one of four contestants eliminated from the top 16, but he ended up squeezing four extra weeks out of the competition, making it to the top...
