Rhiannon Giddens stoped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to showcase her bluesy, Cajun-infused song “You Louisiana Man.” The musician was joined by her live band and a back-up for the rousing performance, which saw Giddens singing and playing banjo.
“You Louisiana Man” comes off Giddens’ most recent LP, You’re the One, which dropped last August. The album marked her first solo effort in six years and her first collection of all-original songs. It was produced by Jack Splash and featured musical contributions by Giddens’ partner, multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, as well as Dirk Powell,...

Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 10, Rolling Stone is breaking down 16 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.
Americana is a wide-open category, partly because it’s hard to define. “I always look at half of the folk category and think they are more Americana than half of the Americana nominees,” says Nelson Gullett, an Americana radio veteran and music director at Wdvx in Knoxville. And as the nomination of Jackson Browne’s Downhill...

Rhiannon Giddens appeared on The Daily Show to perform her recent song “Another Waste Life” and to discuss her Pulitzer-winning opera, Omar, with current host Michael Kosta. Giddens offered a poignant, emotional rendition of “Another Wasted Life,” which comes off her latest LP, You’re the One.
During her interview with Kosta, Giddens discussed creating Omar, as well as the tragic story of Kalief Browder, whose suicide in prison inspired “Another Wasted Life.” She also spoke about the cultural importance of the banjo in American history, reflecting on her love...

Bobby Caldwell, the oft-sampled, blue-eyed soul singer behind the late Seventies smash “What You Won’t Do for Love,” has died at the age of 71.
“Bobby passed away here at home,” Caldwell’s wife Mary tweeted Wednesday. “I held him tight in my arms as he left us. I am forever heartbroken. Thanks to all of you for your many prayers over the years.”
While no cause of death was provided, Caldwell had struggled with health issues over the past six years, which Mary cited as a result of an adverse reaction to fluoroquinolone antibiotic.

Cimafunk was racing through the airport in Havana last month after spending five days in Cuba with his family. He had to catch a flight to Florida, but just before he boarded, his phone kept ringing again and again. When he finally answered, his team was on the other line, telling him that El Alimento — the funk album he’d worked on quietly with the producer Jack Splash in 2021 — had just been nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album.

Valerie June was the musical guest on Late Night with Seth Meyers Wednesday night, performing “Call Me a Fool” from her latest album The Moon and Stars: Prescriptions for Dreamers.
In lieu of a live audience, June and her extensive backing band performed in a large, warmly lit studio space, brightened up by star-shaped lanterns hanging from the walls. June stood out in the center of the room in orange and pink with a matching flower crown, and led her ensemble through the slow-burning number with a smile on her face.

Valerie June has spent the past decade on her own meandering path towards artistic self-definition. Her 2013 album, Pushin’ Against a Stone was her breakthrough, establishing the singer’s distinctive country-blues whine as a vital voice in contemporary roots music.
But the album, co-produced by Dan Auerbach and Kevin Augunas (Edward Sharpe, the Lumineers), also positioned the singer as a rural anachronism amidst the post-Mumfords banjo boom, an image June has been carefully and subtly shedding ever since. She deliberately mapped out her next steps, waiting four years until 2017’s The Order of Time.

Recorded in Los Angeles and Miami with producer Jack Splash, June’s forthcoming project finds the singer brightening and building on the ethereal roots-music blend she introduced on her most recent studio effort.

The last time Valerie June released an album, 2017’s ethereal The Order of Time, the singer-songwriter began to toy with some of the loaded expectations of roots purism and country-blues authenticity that had begun to hover around the singer after the success of her 2013 breakthrough, Pushin’ Against A Stone.
June goes even further to carve out her artistry on her own terms on “Stay/Stay Meditation/You And I,” her entrancing three-song suite that serves as the first preview of the singer-songwriter’s upcoming 2021 LP.

St. Paul & the Broken Bones, who have just released a new album titled Young Sick Camellia, operate in a crowded field of vintage soul fetishists. These guys pop out of bed with a glad James-Brown-like cry and a shiny horn section at the ready: Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Allen Stone, Durand Jones & the Indications, Anderson East, the James Hunter Six, Eli “Paperboy” Reed. For a more reserved take on the style, there is Leon Bridges; for something more boisterous, Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears; for a Norwegian twist, Bernhoft.

Sometimes, Paul Janeway admits, when touring the world with his band, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, he’ll find himself with this “weird desire” to return to a more simple life. Like, say, one spent working at one of the body shops in his rural hometown of Chelsea, Alabama.
But such feelings are fleeting. Because while members of his family have never wavered in their intense Southern pride, as Janeway matured with age — and particularly once he began self-identifying as “uber-liberal” in his twenties — he felt more and more conflicted with his roots.

The thesp agreed to act in it as a favor to the group, which features his pals Dirty Nasty and Jack Splash. The video is up on YouTube, though be forewarned—the clip contains...

B.o.B has just debuted a new music video filmed to support his song titled "Dr. Aden". It revolves around a female doctor who joins a government organization "without the slightest hesitation." In the middle of her work in the lab, "she hears a conversation down the halls, small talk about destabilization."
"Outta curiosity, she wanders from her station/ Inside a unlocked office/ She did some investigation/ She breaks into a file, with top secret information/ Probably some of the most disturbing documentation, she ever saw in her life," B.o.B narrates the story with his verses. "The article simply stated, a study being conducted on human civilization."
"Dr. Aden" is taken from B.o.B's latest street album "No Genre". It's produced by Jack Splash, and its music video is directed by Isaac Klotz.
