Jack Tatum has readied Hold, his first album as Wild Nothing in five years. The record arrives October 27th via Captured Tracks, and along with it comes a North American tour slated for this fall. Additionally, Wild Nothing has shared the new song “Headlights On” featuring Hatchie, which you can listen to below.
Self-produced by Tatum and mixed by Geoff Swan, Hold features contributions from Molly Burch, Becca Mancari, Tommy Davidson of Beach Fossils, Hatchie, and Tatum’s his wife, Dana. A press release describes the record as more electronic and dance-inspired than Wild Nothing’s previous releases, and the artist spoke anxiously about releasing it (and finally following 2018’s Indigo) in a statement.
“I’ve sat with this record for a very long time now, so naturally I’m both excited and apprehensive to let it see the light,” Tatum said. “It’s my first record as a father.

Metrograph Pictures is thrilled to celebrate a record-smashing two-week straight sold-out run of their newly released 4K restoration of Hou Hsiao-hsien‘s 2001 Cannes Palme d’Or nominee Millennium Mambo following its theatrical launch on Friday, December 23. A stylish and seductive submersion into the techno-scored neon nightlife of Taipei, Hou’s much-misunderstood marvel stars Shu Qi (The Assassin) as an aimless bar hostess drifting away from her blowhard boyfriend and towards Jack Kao’s suave, sensitive gangster. Structured as a flashback to the then-present from the then-future of 2011, it’s a transfixing trance-out of a movie, drenched in club lights, ecstatic endorphin-rush exhilaration, and a nagging undercurrent of ennui. A Metrograph Pictures release.

Franco Harris, the Hall of Fame running back who made “the Immaculate Reception” — voted the NFL’s greatest play of all time — and won four Super Bowls with the Pittsburgh Steelers, died early Wednesday. He was 72. His son told the Associated Press that Harris died overnight but did not give other details.
Fifty years ago this week, Harris was a rookie when he caught “The Immaculate Reception” in a playoff game against the Oakland Raiders. Pittsburgh was trailing 7-6 with time running out when quarterback Terry Bradshaw’s desperation pass deflected off either Steelers receiver Frenchy Fuqua and/or Raiders defender Jack Tatum. Harris caught the ball inches from the ground and scampered more than 40 yards down the sideline for a touchdown as time wound down.

Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner continues her busy year with the announcement of Jubilee, her third album, out June 4th.
Zauner dropped the single “Be Sweet” Tuesday, featuring a hilarious self-directed video that stars Zauner and Mannequin Pussy’s Marisa Dabice as FBI agents. They work late nights, tracing maps and gripping flashlights accompanied by Eighties power-pop chords.
Jubilee will arrive two months after the release of Zauner’s upcoming memoir Crying in H Mart, which focuses on growing up Korean-American and losing her mother to cancer.

Two weeks after releasing an explicit rendition of their decade-old cult classic “Potential Breakup Song,” Aly & Aj dropped a new single called “Listen!!!” whose lyrical content is about as charged as the former. Heart’s Nancy Wilson contributed guitar and backing vocals on the track, while Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing brought in backing vocals as well.
Sonically, “Listen!!!” isn’t too much of a departure from the band’s Og sound, with the track fitting perfectly into the style of the duo’s 2007 album Insomniatic. With lyrics about how...

Why not spend the next five-or-so minutes traveling around the globe with Michelle Williams?
The "My Week with Marilyn" beauty makes the "dream pop" of Wild Nothing even dreamier by appearing in the the music video for their (actually "his," but we'll get to that in a second) new single, "Paradise." Michelle also recites from Iris Murdoch's "Word Child" at about two minutes in, which makes for some of the most beautiful-sounding Latin that you'll ever hear.
Wild Nothing is actually just Jack Tatum, who began recording as Wild Nothing in the summer of 2009. He got a lot of attention for his cover of Kate Bush's "Cloudbusting," which led to signing on with Captured Tracks ... which, apparently, then led to getting a three-time Oscar nominee to appear in his music video.
Fly the friendly yet melancholy skies with Wild Nothing and Michelle Williams below, and thanks to Vulture for the find.

Wild Nothing brainiac Jack Tatum nailed a solid formula with his project’s debut effort Gemini. With Nocturne, he takes his tiny, colorful hammer to create little cavities and imperfections that demand time spent with it. This record has the same instant dream pop appeal Real Estate’s Days boasted upon first listen. Make no mistake, it’s mostly about love—specifically (and oh God I hate this phrase) summer love. And one-night stands, with a splash of voyeurism. The sexy starts with opener, “Shadow.” It’s shoegaze pop to a T, with really nice, pretty strings. “Midnight Song” takes a turn toward disco, going...

It’s difficult to follow up a debut like Wild Nothing’s Gemini, which was released to unexpected attention in 2010 and ended up on many year-end lists. The distinct songwriting of Jack Tatum seemed fully realized from the start, and the bar was set so high that it was hard to imagine a follow-up that could match it. But, while it might have been safer to try to make something sounding like Gemini 2, Tatum has instead created an affecting album that stands apart from his breakthrough, not necessarily sounding like a different songwriter, but, rather, sounding like an artist that...

I didn’t go to Reading, or Leeds, this year. I haven’t woken this morning in a field. No, I’ve woken this morning surrounded by empty cans wearing pyjama bottoms and a Converge T Shirt. Most painful of all about my not having gone to Reading, or Leeds, most heartachingly painful of all, is that I didn’t see The Cure play a majestic three hour set.
Watching them from the comfort of my bed, attired in the aforementioned, on BBC iPlayer is not the same. Hangover breakfast of champions or not; gammon steak and scrambled egg (I like protein) splashed with mustard and red sauce. Chased of course with a coffee and a cigarette.
However, by way of compensation I have been gifted with something this week. That something is Wild Nothing’s sophomore effort Nocturne. How this is compensation will be made clear soon.

Bob Thomas/Getty Images Winners: 1978, 1986 Finalists: 1930, 1990 Excerpted from The Espn World Cup Companion, by David Hirshey and Roger Bennett. If you’re partial to A Clockwork Orange, the movies of John Woo, Jack Tatum, or the Broad Street Bullies, the violent beauty of the Argentinian National Team is for you. Artful brutality is a natural part of its game. (Even the Paralympic soccer team had a brawl live on national television in 2004.) Like its rivals, the Brazilians, Argentina’s passion for soccer is born of poverty, but whereas Brazil fuses the South American and the African, Argentinian football looks to Europe. The working classes inherited the game directly from British sailors, and it spread quickly from the ports to the factories and slums, where workers mastered the slaloming style of dribbling that Argentinians idolize. In the words of Eduardo Galeano, they strum “the ball as if it was a guitar,...
