With David Bowie’s name showing up a lot in recent headlines, we take a look at one of his silver screen endeavors. The Hunger is a solid showcase of his abilities, even if the film itself is not exactly perfect.
I always find it interesting when a filmmaker transitions from one video format to another. The Hunger is the late Tony Scott’s modern-day vampires-are-living-among-us big screen debut. Prior to making this film, he had been a director of TV commercials. There’s proof of that in the way that he handles this film. It is full of short, quick cuts. There’s a focus on music and flashes of color, and the camera is often pulled away so that the audience can understand the setting easier. In short, commercial directors are used to having to make their point quickly and distinctively. In the feature length format, there is a lot more space,...

Susan Sarandon prefers to play bad girls. The actress has taken on daring roles as nun Sister Helen Prejean in 'Dead Man Walking' and lesbian vampire Sarah Roberts in 'The Hunger', and finds darker characters more fun. She said: ''Sure I do. Because you get to say and do things that you never in a million years would do. And very often the bad guys are written just so much better than the good guys. MTV's hit cautionary series for sexually active teenagers gave fans a double-dose of teen parenting with two episodes of "16 & Pregnant" (Tue., 10 p.m. Et on MTV). One of those focused on Sarah Roberts, who was the classic model of a typical high school teen. She was doing well in school with aspirations of college.
She had the perfect boyfriend, someone whom she'd been with since junior high. A relationship that blossomed out of a friendship. Sounds perfect, doesn't it?
Unfortunately, Blake couldn't handle the pressure of fatherhood. He and Sarah argued constantly, with Blake lashing out at Sarah's mother even when she came to her daughter's defense. A few weeks after the baby was born, he was out of the picture for good.
She won't be going away to college as she'd planned, but still intends to graduate on time and go to college nearby. Her head is still screwed on straight.

Sarah and Blake's love didn't last, but luckily she has a supportive mother to help her raise beautiful baby Tinleigh. Unlike Hope's beau from last week, not all baby daddies are keepers on this reality show. Sarah Roberts' ex-boyfriend chose video games over responsibility, leaving Sarah a single, teen mother. Sarah, 17, a high school juinor from Chickamauga, Georgia, was dating a video gaming drop-out, Blake. She thought he was the love of her life but he couldn't even count on him to get a baby crib or put aside $10 a month to help support the baby. Unlike many of the other 16 And Pregnant girls, Sarah is very close to her mom, Tina. Naturally, Tina would constantly argue with Blake to make sure he was pulling his weight. Unfortunately, Blake couldn't handle fatherhood and split a mere month after their baby Tinleigh was born via C-section. Instead of accepting responsibility,...

We continue our journey through a month of frightening, bloody and violent films. For more, check out our 31 Days of Horror homepage. Synopsis: Miriam and John Blaylock (Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie) share a passionate longtime love affair, traveling the world and indulging their mutual taste for classical music and the blood of the living. Although John’s love for Miriam might last forever, his youthful vigor will not. After centuries at Miriam’s side, he begins aging at an accelerated rate. Like Miriam’s many past paramours, John seems doomed to a fate worse than death. Under the guise of finding a cure, Miriam begins courting her next conquest – sleep researcher Dr. Sarah Roberts (Susan Sarandon). Killer Scene The Hunger is loaded with memorable scenes, but the opening sequence gets the nod because it can practically stand on its own as a wickedly stylish short. It cuts between goth pioneers Bahaus performing their apropos classic “Bela Lugosi...

In a THR article about how author Whitley Strieber has signed with the Gersh Agency, is news that Warner Bros is currently developing a remake of "The Hunger." Striber wrote "The Hunger" early in her career and back in 1983, director Tony Scott (Man on Fire, Deja Vu) turned the novel into a vampire horror film, starring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie and Susan Sarandon. Plot: An Egyptian vampire lady Miriam subsists upon the blood of her lovers. In return, the men and women don't age, until Miriam had enough of them. That becomes the case with John and his life expectancy has been reduced to 24 hours. Desperately he seeks help from Dr. Sarah Roberts, who decides to get in contact with Miriam herself only to get caught up as well. Last we heard, Scott was considering doing a sequel rather than a remake. And back in July, it was reported that Fredrik Bond (Hack/Slash,...

Joining the remake cavalcade is a retelling of Tony Scott's 1983 vampire flick The Hunger. Not surprising considering how vamps are Hollywood's new "it" things. The news was teased today via THR, and the only detail we know about it is that the film is now in development over at Warner Bros.
The original film told the tale of the Egyptian vampire lady Miriam, who subsists upon the blood of her lovers. In return the guys or girls don't age... until Miriam has enough of them. Unfortunately that's currently the case with John, so his life expectancy is below 24 hours.
Desperately he seeks help from the famous Dr. Sarah Roberts. She doesn't really believe his story, but becomes curious and contacts Miriam ... and gets caught in her web, too.
Who knows how faithful this new flick will be to the original plot-wise? Dig on the trailer below and let's hope for the best,...
