Have you ever considered how a movie becomes a bona fide cult classic? While many factors play a role, the phenomenon usually begins with a high-quality product that fails to resonate among the masses during its initial release due to ungraspable material ahead of its time, yet through its own undeniable merits, finds its passionate fanbase that grows over time and allows the film to become far more popular after the fact than it was in the present tense. In the case of David Cronenberg’s sci-fi body horror opus Videodrome, the film has overcome its notorious box-office failure to ascend as one of the most revered movies of Cronenberg’s illustrious career.

Most would agree that Paul Verhoeven‘s Total Recall is one of the best two or three Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. It’s definitely up there in the pantheon of great action movies, with it standing the test of time very well over the years, with not even a lousy remake taking the shine off this gem. Ultra-violent and often hilarious, it’s Verhoeven at his most unhinged, with Arnold Schwarzenegger playing Douglas Quaid, an ordinary guy who just might be a secret agent from Mars named Hauser.
Verhoeven directed Total Recall from a screenplay by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, and Gary Goldman (Jon Povill also receives a story credit), based on the novelette “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. The film has the following synopsis:
Douglas Quaid is a bored construction worker in the year 2084 who dreams of visiting the colonized Mars. He visits “Rekall,...

Richard Kelly’s Donnie Darko is a true cult film. Having premiered at Sundance back in 2001, it was released to theatres via a small company called Newmarket Films, and given that it opened in the wake of 9/11, it came and went with nary a trace. In fact, the company came close to sending it direct-to-video, but in the end, Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas, who had made Memento for the company, pushed them to give it a release. While it barely made any money in theaters, something interesting happened once it hit VHS/DVD – it started to sell – a lot. People would rent the movie, lured in by the intriguing cover art and the presence of Drew Barrymore and Jake Gyllenhaal (then best known for October Sky and Bubble Boy), and watch it over and over. Indeed, word began to spread through college campuses and online about this weird sci-fi flick set in the 80s,...

Jupiter Ascending was a movie sci-fi fans were really looking forward to. It would mark the long-awaited return of the Wachowskis to the sci-fi action genre, something they left behind when Speed Racer flopped theatrically. This promised to be a large-scale fantasy epic that fans hoped would be the new Matrix. Alas, things didn’t work out that way, with critics savaging the film when it came out and audiences staying away in droves.
Complaints included a muddled sci-fi universe, a bizarre choice to make Channing Tatum’s hero part dog, and the fact that newly minted Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne’s acting was so over the top that people thought he should have his award taken back. A charming performance by Mile Kunis as the heroine and a solid score by Michael Giacchino was not enough to save this turkey. It would mark the Wachowskis’ swan song as a team,...
