“Masters of the Air” costume designer Colleen Atwood brought along Austin Butler’s jacket to Variety’s TV FYC Fest. “It’s Austin Butler’s jacket that he wore, Maj. Cleven’s jacket and hat, and I thought, ‘Well, I should bring it.’ It’s D-Day. People like seeing real stuff,'” Atwood told the audience.
Atwood was joined by her fellow artisans from the Apple TV+ series: supervising sound editor and re-recording mixer Michael Minkler, composer Blake Neely, director of photography Richard Rutkowski and music supervisor Deva Anderson. The panelists acknowledged the 80th anniversary of D-Day with Neely sharing news. “I just found out that a piece from ‘Masters of the Air’ is what opened the D-Day Normandy event,” he told his fellow department heads.

When writer John Orloff took on the task of turning historian Donald L. Miller’s “Masters of the Air” into a series for Apple TV+, one task was paramount: putting the audience in the shoes of the Air Force pilots whose World War II exploits were documented in Miller’s book. “We all know what infantry combat looks like,” Orloff told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “We haven’t really seen what these air bomber combat missions were really like.” Knowing that authenticity, both in terms of historical detail and visceral emotional experience, would be key, Orloff turned to visual effects supervisor Stephen Rosenbaum to bring the era and action to life. Although Rosenbaum is known for his groundbreaking work in the fantasy realm on films like James Cameron’s “Avatar,” for “Masters of the Air,” he adhered strictly to reality.

Emmy watchers should not be surprised if multiple top contenders this year opt to take a shot at the drama series race rather than compete in the limited series category. The list is known to include Apple TV+ ‘s “Masters of the Air,” FX’s “Shōgun” and HBO’s “The Sympathizer,” which means that those platforms are considering future seasons of those shows.
Multiple sources tell Variety that the top-tier contenders that seemed naturally bound for the limited series race are the subject of intense strategy discussions among network executives, agents, creators, PR and awards consultants. In order to win the Television Academy’s blessing to compete for drama series, networks would have to prove that the production will be ongoing beyond one season, which would differ from their original intent. Decision time is fast approaching as the submission deadline is May 9 for programs that aired between June 1, 2023-May 31, 2024. Representatives...

When it comes to chronicling the bravery of the Greatest Generation during World War II, few if any can claim to have done it better than Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
The Oscar-winning duo – whose first project about the Second World War, “Saving Private Ryan,” won Spielberg his second Best Director Oscar and landed Hanks a nomination for Best Actor. They have spent decades cataloging the sacrifice of American soldiers during WWII across multiple acclaimed television projects, including “Band of Brothers” (focused on Army paratroopers) and “The Pacific” (focused on Marines).
This year, Spielberg and Hanks are back again with “Masters of the Air,” the Apple TV+ limited series about the 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force (also known as the Bloody Hundredth) who flew deadly and dangerous missions over Germany during World War II. With its pedigree – both “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific” won Emmy Awards for best miniseries,...

When screenwriter John Orloff reunited with “Band of Brothers” producers Gary Goetzman, Tom Hanks, and Steven Spielberg to adapt Donald L. Miller’s “Masters of the Air,” a non-fiction account of the Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group during World War II, he knew he wanted to give the audience a visceral sense of what it was like to there in the planes.

Austin Butler’s performance really lifted this WWII drama, pulling in more viewers in its first weekend than any other Apple TV+ show has managed in a whole season. It even outpaced the Godzilla spin-off, Monarch, in viewership.

“Masters of the Air” launched with more viewers in its opening weekend than any Apple TV+ series ever has in its first season, according to the streamer. Though an exact number of viewers was not made available, that puts the epic war miniseries launch above other high-profile original titles like “Hijack,” “The Morning Show” and “Severance.”
Remarkably, following the premiere of “Masters of the Air,” viewership across all of Apple TV+ climbed by 65% worldwide when compared to the previous seven-day period. The streamer also maintained double-digit growth across more than 100 territories.
“Masters of the Air” is currently debuting new episodes, with its sixth installment premiering on Friday, Feb. 23. The finale will bow on the streamer on March 15.

The World War II drama series "Masters of the Air," created by John Shiban and John Orloff and currently airing on AppleTV+, takes place in 1943 and follows Usaaf majors as they are transferred to England to aid the Allied war effort. Austin Butler plays Major Gale Cleven and Callum Turner plays Major John Egan, both real-life Usaaf pilots, and the series is based on the biographical book "Masters of the Air: America's Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany," written by Donald L. Miller.
"Masters of the Air" was also co-produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, who previously oversaw the WWII drama shows "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" after collaborating on the 1998 film "Saving Private Ryan." These two men love harrowing tales of soldiers and seem hellbent on recreating the 1940s soldiers' experience on film as accurately as possible. Apple TV’s new World War II epic Masters of the Air has faced a very steep climb to take flight, creatively speaking.
First, it had to live up to the legacy of its extraordinary predecessor, HBO’s 2001 limited series Band of Brothers, which some consider to be their all-time favorite war “movie.” BoB‘s successor, 2010’s The Pacific, showed, if anything, what a high bar the original set. And then there are the challenges of pulling off an air-war epic — it’s inherently tougher (for reasons we’ll get into), and potentially far more expensive (all those special effects shots), than infantry stories. Perhaps that’s why it’s taken more than a decade for Masters of the Air — which is based on Donald L. Miller’s book — to make the journey from concept to screen.

Austin Butler made an appearance at the screening and Q&a for the Apple TV + miniseries Masters of the Air in New York City, sporting a new look from his Elvis days.
Butler, who was best known for his role starring as the late Elvis Presley in the 2022 film Elvis, joined his co-stars Callum Turner, Barry Keoghan, Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann for the event to promote the new World War II miniseries.
Butler appeared with the suit-and-no-tie look. Turner had on a beige sweater with buttons on top, black pants and white shoes. Keoghan showed up wearing a suit with a striped dress shirt. Boyle ditched the suit and wore his dress shirt, black pants, and black shoes. Mann sported a brown sweater and gray pants.

Plot: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen, and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed. And some were lucky enough to make it home. Regardless of individual fate, a toll was exacted on them all.

Masters of the Air is finally here and the fans of The Pacific and Band of Brothers are going crazy over the masterfully created World War II series. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the Apple TV+ series revolves around the pilots of bomber planes in the 100th Bomb Group as they fight with everything they have to protect the world from Nazis. Based on a novel by Donald L. Miller titled Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, the series is adapted for television by John Shiban and John Orloff, it feels like the third entry in the World War II shows by Spielberg and Hanks. Masters of the Air is genuinely one of the best series I have seen in many years, check out my review of the complete series here.

Even before they earned Oscar nominations for their respective performances in “Elvis” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” Austin Butler and Barry Keoghan were already flying high. Apple TV+ series “Masters of the Air” is the third collaboration from the team behind HBO’s “Band of Brothers” and “The Pacific.” Trio Tom Hanks, Gary Goetzman and Steven Spielberg produced the nine-part World War II epic series, which spotlights the men who fought in the 8th Air Force, specifically the men of the 100th Bomb Group. The vivid and vital story finds roots in the book of the same name by Donald L. Miller.
The crew of a typical Eighth Air Force heavy bomber plane included ten men — a pilot and his co-pilot flying the B17, the navigator and the bombardier in the machine’s nose, the flight engineer behind the pilot, the radio operator, two waist gunners, a ball turret gunner and a tail gunner. Not to mention the men who strategized from the bases, the plane engineers and Tuskegee airmen or Royal Airforce pilots who feature in this story.

As Austin Butler put the finishing touches on his eventual Oscar-nominated performance as Elvis Presley, his Elvis co-star Tom Hanks was already envisioning the budding superstar’s next move. In early 2021, just weeks before Elvis was scheduled to wrap, Hanks took Butler to dinner and pitched him Masters of the Air, the spiritual follow-up to the Emmy-winning miniseries Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Based on Donald L. Austin Butler Says He Hired a Dialect Coach to Help Get Rid of Elvis Accent for ‘Masters of the Air’
Austin Butler revealed that he only had a week between filming Elvis and Masters of the Air, which means he had to work extra hard to drop his Elvis Presley accent.

Butler explained that he faced some challenges once filming wrapped for Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis because he dedicated three years of his life to portraying the King of Rock ‘and ‘n’ Roll. Once the film was complete, the actor admitted he struggled trying to rediscover himself.

In one episode of the new World War II epic Masters of the Air, a character collapses from exhaustion and sleeps through the events of D-Day, which were so memorably dramatized in Saving Private Ryan. When Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg want to executive-produce a World War II drama, it’s tough to say no. As “Masters of the Air” nears its end, one surviving member of the Air Force’s “Bloody Hundredth” bombing group finds himself standing next to a fireplace, sipping on whiskey, and quoting the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. “Whoever fights monsters should take care not to become a monster himself,” he paraphrases for his fellow flyer, as they prepare to leave the war behind and return to their families. “Because if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes right back at you.”
In the moment, the sentiment is sound enough. Both men have experienced war, up close and personal, and both have been shaped by the harrowing combat all around them. It’s only natural to wonder what they’ll be like when they’re home, when they’re grounded, when the bombs are no longer dropping from the sky. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed.

Miller’s book of the same name. “That’s why they each joined the Army Air Corps in 1940, 18 months before America entered the war. It wasn’t to be soldiers. It was to fly planes. But the war slowly changes them, taking them from being boy-men to men.” Apple TV+ It’s familiar territory for Orloff, co-writer...

Ever since Saving Private Ryan, it has been nearly impossible not to get excited over a Steven Spielberg/Tom Hanks collaboration, especially when it comes to projects surrounding their shared love of World War II. And their latest, Masters of the Air, looks to be a stellar addition to the lineup.
This time around, executive producers Spielberg and Hanks – along with Gary Geotzman who, like the aforementioned men, helped get Band of Brothers and The Pacific on the air – take to the skies, focusing on a group in the United States Army Air Forces. While Band of Brothers and The Pacific were both monumental hits for HBO and won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries, Masters of the Air will be headed to Apple TV+, where it is no doubt one of the most highly anticipated series since the service launched.

Apple TV+ taketh away, but Apple TV+ also giveth in spades. It's been over a decade since production on the war epic "Masters of the Air" began, but the Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks-executive produced limited series follow-up to "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" is almost here. Originally developed as a project for HBO, "Masters of the Air" jumped over to Apple TV+ in 2019 as the first in-house production for the studio. Of course, filming a sweeping WWII drama with explosions and flight scenes will take a bit more time than, say, a relatable dramedy like "Shrinking" (not to mention the necessary delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic), but the newest trailer for the highly-anticipated series signals that our wait has not been in vain.
