The chants and shouts of pro-Palestinian demonstrators disrupted the entry to the Washington Hilton for this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, but once inside, attendees were greeted with what has become the usual scene: Celebrities on the red carpet, a crush for the security line and glitterati packed into a cavernous ballroom.
“I want to thank my wife for enduring lots of jokes and for agreeing to individually meet everyone in this room right after the ceremony,” the evening’s featured entertainer, Colin Jost, quipped about Scarlett Johansson, who posed for photos with a non-stop stream of attendees. She continued to do so later in the evening, at the Comcast-nbcu after party at the French ambassador’s residence.

Ronna McDaniel, the former chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, is joining NBC News as a political analyst.
McDaniel will start in her role on Sunday with an appearance on Meet the Press with Kristen Welker. She will sit for an interview, her first since stepping down last month. The network said that the conversations to secure the interview started months before McDaniel was hired as a contributor.
McDaniel will appear on NBC News and MSNBC, and will be part of the network’s campaign and election night programming. That also will include appearances on NBC News Now.
McDaniel, the second woman to serve as RNC chair, was a steadfast defender of former President Donald Trump. About a year after the attacks on the Capitol, she presided over an RNC resolution to censure Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger for their work as members of a House committee investigating the siege.

Former professional boxer Mike Tyson has entered the cannabis industry in New York, joining the lineup of celebrities selling weed in his home state.
Celebrities have launched product lines and secured endorsement deals over the last decade as the use of cannabis was becoming legalized in many states. New York joined the states allowing legal recreational weed last year.
The former champ, 57, recently released the Tyson 2.0 line, including smokable flower varieties named Tiger Mintz and Knockout Og. He also sold gummies shaped like Evander Holyfield‘s ear, a reference to when he bit Holyfield’s ear during a 1997 bout, one of the six fights he lost.
Tyson is one of the biggest names in the industry so far.
During a recent public appearance in Manhattan, hundreds of fans were spotted trying to buy the cannabis from him. The former boxer made over $40,000 in sales within a few hours at two participating dispensaries.

The women of “The View” may love the concept of “The Golden Bachelor,” and even the man himself after he appeared on the show earlier this year. But they definitely don’t love how much he’s cried on the show. On Friday, Joy Behar even compared him to former House speaker John Boehner.
Indeed, Gerry Turner has shed quite a few tears on show, often around the time he sends another woman home. And, for Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin, it’s a bit melodramatic.
“He cries a lot, this guy. It’s like, it’s just a TV show, nobody died,” Behar mocked. “He’s always crying! He’s like in John Boehner territory.”
Of course, Behar mispronounced Boehner’s last name, saying it as it looks phonetically, and her co-hosts immediately pounced on her for it. But she shrugged it off, saying she and Boehner “go back,...

Update: Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Oh) lost ground in his bid to become House speaker, as he again fell short of a majority in a roll call vote.
Twenty-two Republicans voted against him, two more than did so in Tuesday’s vote.
The latest tally was 199 votes for Jordan and 212 for House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
Jordan won over some members who voted against him on Tuesday, but he lost others. It’s unclear whether he will move to a third vote. The House went into recess after the final tally was announced. Jordon told reporters afterward that he hasn’t decided if he will pursue a third vote.
In nominating Jordan, Rep. Tom Cole (R-ok) urged Republicans to end the “chaos” of the past two weeks, calling the Ohio congressman an “honorable man.”

Update, 2:20 p.m.: Jim Jordan’s effort to become speaker of the House will be put off for another day.
The next vote is now scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday. It’s an indication that Jordan and his allies are still struggling to win over holdouts.
“We’re going to keep going. We’ve had great conversations, especially with our colleagues,” Jordan told CNN’s Manu Raju. He said “we have to get a speaker and it can’t be some deal with the Democrats. The American people don’t want that. They elected Republicans in a majority — a small majority, I get it.”
Previously: The House may be in for a bit of deja vu, as Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Oh) fell short of winning the speakership on the first ballot.

MSNBC host Chris Hayes unpacked the news that Donald Trump has endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan for speaker of the House on Friday night, explaining how Jordan as speaker would be a “near-worst-case scenario” in the wake of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s ouster.
As the Republican party now scrambles to fill the speaker of the House role after this week’s vote to expel McCarthy, Donald Trump – the heavy favorite to win the Republican nomination for president in the 2024 election who is also under four indictments – endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan on Friday. But on Friday’s “All In,” Hayes explained why Jordan would be a “proxy” for Trump.
“A vote for Jordan from any Republican, but especially from vulnerable members, is a vote for a Maga extremist. It is a proxy vote for Donald Trump. Donald Trump’s anointed him. Heck, it’s a vote for Donald Trump and Matt Gaetz,...

Update: Kevin McCarthy spoke to reporters for nearly 50 minutes, in which he at first tried to strike a tone of gratitude and positivity about his tenure but then got into some score setting of the eight members who voted to oust him.
He said that they are not conservative but “angry and chaotic.” Of Rep. Nancy Mace (R-Sc), he said, “is a whole other story,” suggesting that she is lying when she says that he hasn’t kept his word.
Of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-fl), who led the effort to remove him, McCarthy said, “You know it was personal. It was not about spending….It was about ethics.” Gaetz is the subject of an ethics committee investigation. “Just because Gaetz said something, don’t believe it’s true. I haven’t heard him say one true thing yet.”

George Santos is a “dead man walking.” That’s how Brendan Buck, former press secretary to Republican House Speaker John Boehner and current political analyst, described the U.S. representative while on Tuesday night’s episode of “Alex Wagner Tonight.”

Buck emphasized that most representatives who get into situations where they know they will likely be convicted and “have no future” step down. “I just don’t know that we can trust George Santos is going to see that that clearly. It took 15 tries, but Kevin McCarthy finally secured the votes he needed to become the next House speaker on Friday night. But “The View” host Alyssa Farah Griffin is pretty sure that his tenure in the position will be the shortest “in history.”
To kick off the discussion on McCarthy during Monday’s Hot Topics, moderator Whoopi Goldberg tried to nip it in the bud. Playing back footage of the near-brawl between Alabama Republican Mike Rodgers and Matt Gaetz — which came after Gaetz torpedoed McCarthy’s 14th attempt — Whoopi posed the topic to her co-hosts very sarcastically.
“Given how this particular clown show has played out, do you have any hope — any hope at all — that they will actually do any business? Get any business done?” she asked. When her colleagues answered a resounding “no,” she jokingly moved on, saying “Ok, next!”
Of course, the women did actually have a longer discussion on the topic.

After days of public humiliation, and a chaotic 14th loss, Republican Kevin McCarthy has finally been elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on the 15th vote.
Just past Friday midnight, the Bakersfield, California, congressman at last secured the votes necessary to take hold of the gavel, following a grueling series of failed ballots that saw a gang of nearly 20 Republicans repeatedly lock arms against the longtime House GOP leader.
The impasse began to break on Friday morning. McCarthy held a call with Republicans, proclaiming he and the party were in a “good position.

Kevin McCarthy’s as-yet fruitless bid to become the GOP Speaker of the House is a once-in-a-century shitshow. The last time the House failed to select a Speaker on a single ballot was back in 1923.
McCarthy’s humiliation is historic, but it’s not out of keeping with a Republican party whose turbulent rule over the House of Representatives has been marred by crisis, coup attempts, and criminality since the 1990s.
The “Republican Revolution” of 1994 ended 40 years of Democratic dominance in the House. But it installed a party whose ideological...

Former House Speaker John Boehner choked up as he described the legacy of Nancy Pelosi, a partisan rival who nevertheless was “unfailingly gracious to me, my family and frankly to my team here in Washington.”
“My girls told me: tell the speaker how much we admire her,” Boehner said in a Capitol Hill ceremony on Wednesday to unveil the official portrait of Pelosi, who is stepping down from Democratic leadership after 20 years.
Boehner, a Republican, succeeded Pelosi as speaker after Republicans won the House in the 2010 midterms. He stepped down in 2015, and was succeeded by Paul Ryan. Pelosi became speaker again after Democrats reclaimed the majority in 2018. She announced last month that she would step away from leadership, as Republicans prepare to retake a slim majority in the House.

Barack Obama stopped by The Daily Show on Thursday to discuss why he believes youth turnout made a huge difference in the midterm elections and how globalization, disinformation and media infrastructure have contributed to democracy weakening around the world.
Trevor Noah began his conversation with the former president by asking him two questions: if he feels pressure to come out and support new Democratic candidates, and what he thinks it means for the party that he always has to hit the campaign trail.
While it seemed like Noah was hinting at the fact that Obama was a major factor in the Democratic victories this year, he shut down that notion and countered by saying he thinks it had everything to do with the people who were running.

For a Robert Caro fan like myself, waiting for the Pulitzer Prize–winning author’s fifth volume in his monumental Lbj biography (which launched in 1982) is a condition best described as managing intense anticipation for the continuation of our greatest living storyteller’s magnum opus, and an ever-sobering grasp of mortality: Caro is 86.
True, we can’t hurry excellence, especially one committed to pencils, a typewriter, and carbon paper. But if people like me are chomping, what must his longtime editor Robert Gottlieb be thinking? He just turned 91!
The book world’s most formidable duo for more than 50 years — since they first teamed on Caro’s reputation-making political biography “The Power Broker” — is the subject of “Turn Every Page,” one of the better documentaries about researching, writing, and reading, directed by Gottlieb’s daughter Lizzie.

Wyoming Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney ripped Trump once again, saying the former president not only used language in the past that ultimately led to the attack on the Capitol but that he continues to do so to this day.
On Sunday, Face the Nation host Margaret Brennan asked Cheney about former Republican speaker John Boehner saying that January 6th was an example of “political terrorism” and how the events of that day should have been a wake-up call for the GOP. Boehner, the host said, doesn’t understand why more Republicans don’t speak up.

Barack Obama is on a publicity blitz for his new memoir A Promised Land, and he’s already drawn headlines for his warnings about democracy in the face of rampant disinformation in the media.
He does go into some detail about how he himself countered Donald Trump’s false suggestion that Obama was not born in the United States. Trump drew loads of media attention in 2011 as he pursued the birther lie, compelling Obama to ultimately produce his long-form birth certificate.
In his memoir, Obama describes what happened next: Appearing at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner that year, he unleashed a brutal takedown of Trump, who was then teasing the idea of a presidential run.
“Fortunately it turned out that the country’s leading distraction had been invited to sit at the Washington Post’s table that night, and those of us aware of what was going on took...

Here’s a lesson for the nation’s burgeoning medical-marijuana market: You may be growing, but you can’t bogart that Super Bowl commercial.
Acreage Holdings, a company that works to make marijuana available to adults for medical and/or recreational use where legal, is hoping to spark a haze of publicity by noting CBS declined to run a 60-second commercial it created to run in the network’s coming broadcast of Super Bowl Liii on Sunday February 3rd. The move is one of the latest in a series of promotional stunts various entrepreneurs have tried to enact around the Super Bowl each year.
“We put together a storyboard for an ad we planed on producing, ad we submitted it to the ad buying team at CBS through a media partner of ours. Very quickly after we submitted, we received rejection, and it wasn’t wholly unexpected,” says Harris Damashek,...

There’s an insurrection brewing in the House of Pelosi.
An intractable group on the Democratic Party’s center flank is working to deny Nancy Pelosi the speaker’s gavel. The leaders of the block-Pelosi effort — which roughly mirrors the right-wing Freedom Caucus’ play to oust Republican Speaker John Boehner in 2015 — include Reps. Seth Moulton (D-ma), a 40-year-old former Marine officer, and Tim Ryan (D-oh) a 45-year-old former college quarterback who ran against Pelosi for the minority leader post in 2016 and lost badly, 134–63.

Richard Linklater and the Fire Ted Cruz Pac have now teamed up on four commercials designed to convince Texans heading to the polls on November 6th that the incumbent senator is not the man to represent their state. Each of the ads have featured nothing more than an extremely Texan man, played by Sonny Carl Davis, sitting in an extremely Texan coffee shop, expressing bewilderment over how his home state could embrace such a craven, unlikable politician. Released Tuesday afternoon, the latest offering keys in on how even Republicans find Cruz objectionable.

House Speaker Paul Ryan announced he will not run for re-election in November. The Wisconsin Republican and former Vice President candidate will have served three years as leader of the U.S. House of Representatives after he replaced John Boehner.
In a morning presser, Ryan seemed anxious to remind reporters he did not seek the leadership position in the first place and that he was not running for re-election to Congress because another term would mean his kids would have only known him as a weekend dad.
“You all know that I did not seek this job. I took it reluctantly,” he told reporters – again — at the press conference. “I have given it all that I have and have no regrets having accepted this responsibility. This has been one of the two greatest honors of my life.”

Last Week’S Review: ‘Mr. Robot’ Abandons Reality And Blows Our Minds

If you were one of the many viewers who thought that Elliot was not really hiding out at his mother’s home then congratulations, you win a bitcoin. The reveal that Elliot has actually been in jail for the first half of this season isn’t much of a surprise, and many will undoubtably find it to be a letdown. Like the unmasking of Mr. Robot as Elliot’s dead father in last season, the show attempts a one-two punch by pulling another surprise at the same time. Last year, it was the hammer blow that Darlene was Elliot’s sister; now we learn that Leon is actually working for Whiterose and the Dark Army. But the surprises are not nearly as effective this time around. On the bright side,...

There are some hours of television that I immediately recognize that I (and everyone else watching) will either love or hate. There is no in between.
Mr. Robot Season 2 Episode 6 is one of those hours – well, hour and ten minutes, technically – and I absolutely, unabashedly loved it. Buckle up, folks, this is a long review.
Regular watchers of this series already know that Mr. Robot is a one-of-a-kind, unique show, but the opening twenty minutes of "Master Slave" cements it.
Rather than picking up where we left off on Mr. Robot Season 2 Episode 5 – with Elliot getting the snot viciously beaten out of him by Ray's minions – it completely veers off in a wholly unexpected and super trippy direction.
Elliot's mind is a magical place (to put it kindly), and mid-beating, it decides to take him into a warped imaginary reality – an early '90s-style family sitcom complete with garish laugh...

A name of a man is a mind-numbing blow from which he never recovers,” says a prefatory title from Marshall McLuhan as this vertiginous political documentary begins. That was not always true for awkwardly named seven-term Us congressman Anthony Weiner. He always grasped the issue of his penile-soundalike surname, so to speak, with both hands. “Who does John Boehner think he’s fooling?” he’d often ask audiences. Weiner was a gifted street fighter, a loudmouth, at a time when Democrats had assumed a collective defensive crouch, and you have to think that name was among the things that toughened him up.

Third candidate's a charm? With many Republicans unwilling to give their votes to presumptive nominee Donald Trump or Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton, some are now pinning their hopes on a potential third-party candidate. In a Facebook manifesto published Thursday morning, rising-star Republican and Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse argued that neither political party is working and called for a one-term, "problem-solver" candidate for this "messy moment." "Why shouldn't America draft an honest leader who will focus on 70% solutions for the next four years? You know ... an adult?" he asked before closing his nearly 1,500-word open letter with the hash tags #WeCanDoBetter and #GiveUsMoreChoices.
