On Sunday, movie fans will find out if Eddie Redmayne wins Best Actor for his performance as trans woman Lili Elbe in The Danish Girl. Should Redmayne be victorious, he'd not only score back-to-back Oscars but he would also become the latest in a long line of actors who have courted Oscar attention by playing the opposite sex, playing a trans person or in some other way playing a character whose gender differs than the one of which the actors themselves identify. Not that it comes without some criticism, of course. Also up for an Oscar this year is the...

Also nominated are David Lang for "Simple Song #3" from Youth and J. Ralph and Antony Hegarty (of the band Antony and the Johnsons) for their song "Manta Ray" from Racing Extinction. While diverse, this year's nominees in the Academy Awards' Best Original Song category are competing on an even playing ground. Most of the writers and performs are first-time nominees, with two-time Best Documentary winner J. Ralph and, now, eight-time Best Original Song Nominee Diane Warren as the exceptions. Still, it's an Oscar-winner free game and has many hitmakers vying for a very rare award for musicians to nab.

On August 1st, digital images of endangered species were projected onto the side of the Empire State Building. It was the first time moving images had been projected on the historic NYC skyscraper, according to The New York Times, and it was soundtracked by new songs from Sia and Antony of Antony and the Johnsons created with composer J. Ralph. "One Candle," the massive and upbeat Sia song off the soundtrack to the upcoming documentary Racing Extinction, is now available to hear in a new trailer for the film premiering on Rolling Stone.

Cut the World, Antony and the Johnsons’ gorgeous 2012 live album with the Danish National Chamber Orchestra, contained some stage banter that was a bit more inspired than your average “Hello, Cleveland!” The second track was a long, provocative speech titled “Future Feminism,” in which the angel-voiced New York–based artist ruminated on the connections between the natural world and the human body, between environmentalism and feminism, between misogyny and organized religion. “I truly believe that unless we move to feminine systems of governance, we don’t have a chance on this planet,” Antony said, to passionate applause. “I’m very interested in Jesus as a girl. I’m extremely interested in Allah as a woman. And contrary to popular opinion, it’s not bad to say that — you can say it. I mean, you might get a little letter in the mail, but I’m probably due a hundred letters in the mail already.

Several songs from the upcoming soundtrack for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire have been released either in full or as previews and I've tried to include as many as I knew about and could find directly below including songs from Christina Aguilera, Coldplay, Sia, Ellie Goulding and The National. When we were putting together our New Hollywood issue, one of the big questions we faced was: How many times do we include Tatiana Maslany? The 27-year-old Canadian actress dazzles on the BBC America drama Orphan Black, playing seven clones and counting (including distressed single mom Sarah, type-a suburban mom Alison, misguided self-mutilator Helena, quirky Ph.D. student Cosima) who are entangled in a murky, dangerous conspiracy.
How does Maslany slip so easily into all of these different characters? Does she have a creative crutch? Turns out, she gets in tune with each role by, well, playing specific tunes.

British crooner Essie Jain and Lower East Side composer Nico Muhly recently collaborated on a new project, combining the ethereal voice of Ms. Jain with the classical contemporary arrangements of Mr. Muhly in a soon-to-be-released "film record."
What is a "film record," you ask?
It's a documentary of sorts, capturing the rehearsals, performances and recording sessions associated with Jain's upcoming release, "All Became Golden." Directed by Natalie Johns, the work is a visual and lyrical exploration of Jain's re-entrance into the music world after disappearing for the past two years.
"I guess I heard 'no' too many times. If I did put my hands to the keys it just seemed this impossible, overwhelming task," she explains in a trailer for the "All Became Golden" film. "I knew if I played music again it would have to be something spectacular."
Working with Muhly certainly qualifies as something spectacular. The grown-up prodigy...

Iron And Wine’s latest record, Ghost On Ghost, will be released April 16 on Nonesuch. The LP, Sam Beam’s second for the label, is apparently the singer’s attempt to release the “anxious tension” he’d built up recording his last few records, including 2011’s Kiss Each Other Clean. Recorded with longtime producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Califone, Fruit Bats), Ghost On Ghost features album art by photographer Barbara Crane and instrumental help from members of Tin Hat Trio, Sex Mob, Jazz Passengers, and Antony And The Johnsons. The jazzy first single from the record, “Lovers’ Revolution ...

No one ever accused Sam Mickens of a lack of theatricality. His prolific output with various avant-indie groups—among them Xiu Xiu, Parenthetical Girls, and his own outfit The Dead Science—has always exhibited a shameless, even decadent obsession with grand gestures and epic dramatism. But Mickens lets it all hang out, slightly for the worse but mostly for the better, on his debut solo album, Slay & Slake. Opening with “Lord Death Man” is a gutsy move; imagining Seventh Son-era Iron Maiden collaborating with Antony And The Johnsons, the song starts with soaringly harmonized metal guitars before slinking into ...
