The Demon’s Rook is a micro-budget horror movie with some pretty killer homemade makeup work and a lot of heart. But seriously. This movie is working on a shoe string budget. The plot is laced with old school fantasy and horror standards.
Roscoe is taken as a young child and trained in an underworld by the demon Dimwos. When he returns to his home as an adult, he unwittingly brings back three demons with him and must reunite with an old friend to fight them back into the nether realm. It’s a pretty standard affair. Writing, directing, acting and makeup is all done by one man band James Sizemore while his wife takes the reigns of his long lost friend and love interest.

Do you want to see something bonkers? The Demon’S Rook is. Gory, psychotronic and homemade, The Demon’S Rook is ambitious no-budget horror. Steeped in strange mythology and boasting ultraviolent setpieces, James Sizemore’s SFX-driven fantasy-horror is very much a good time, and Fangoria is very excited to present a free screening of the film at our regular Los Angeles […]...

In the first episode of 2014, Deane and Brian sit down with orchestrator, music programmer and overall technical guru James Sizemore, who has been Howard Shore’s right-hand man since 2008. The boys delve into how James and Shore worked with visionary director Peter Jackson to bring the Hobbit films to the screen and what goes into collaborating on a cultural phenomenon that, when finished, will occupy the better part of five years for all involved. Additionally, the guys call Bs on an article that appeared in The Guardian wherein a claim was made that “synths are killing” the film industry, as well as a discussion of a roundtable which focussed on having a “voice” as a composer and dealing with difficult directors.

The fourth annual London Underground Film Festival is the first edition of the fest to be run by new caretakers Daniel Fawcett and Clara Pais, two accomplished filmmakers. The festival will run November 14-17 at the legendary avant-garde media center, the Horse Hospital.
Fawcett and Pais have programmed a bold fest, which begins on the 14th with the London-based documentary Grasp the Nettle by Dean Puckett. The film follows the challenges faced by a group of land rights activists fighting for a piece of disused land in West London. Also on opening night is Randy Moore’s Escape From Tomorrow, which was filmed surreptitiously at Disneyland; and Táu by Daniel Castro Zimbrón.
Other films screening at the fest include the award winning doc A Body Without Organs, directed by Steven Graves; Alex Munt’s Warhol homage Poor Little Rich Girls (After Warhol); Irene Lusztig’s history of childbirth, The Motherhood...

The 6th annual Minneapolis Underground Film Festival makes its move into October this year where it will be screening on Oct. 3-6 at the St. Anthony Main Theater. The fest, while screening new films from all over, does a fantastic job of screening movies by local Minnesota filmmakers.
Some of these locally produced films include Mark Nielson’s spooky road trip flick Land of Sky Blue Water; Adam Jacobs’ suspense comedy Weekend Hat, which was also produced entirely by high school students; Dave Ash’s sci-fi drama Connected, which is co-directed by Paul von Stoetzel, whose short film Twisted Sister screens before the feature; Donny West’s autobiographical documentary Dazzle (The Donny West Story); and Phil Holbrook’s drama Tilt. Marks the second consecutive year a Takashi Miike film has opened Montreal’s genre film festival.
Takashi Miike’s Shield of Straw, which screened in competition at Cannes, is to open the 17th edition of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival (July 18 - August 6).
Miike’s crime thriller receives its North American premiere at Fantasia and continues the long relationship between the director and festival.
Last year, Fantasia opened with Miike’s For Love’s Sake and the festival’s 1997 screening of Fudoh marked the first time a film by the director had ever been shown in North America.
The festival will also host the world premiere of 24 Exposures, from mumblecore director Joe Swanberg. The film stars Adam Wingard as a fetish photographer whose models begin to turn up dead while Simon Barrett plays a cop tasked with investigating him.
