British TV presenter Gregg Wallace usually enjoys calm Saturdays, we are told, but he has had a less serene week, trading brickbats with the UK press, in a debacle that has highlighted the perils of the apparent “tell-all” celebrity magazine feature.
This began seven days ago, when Wallace – a familiar face on TV screens as the longtime presenter of Masterchef and a catalog of other food-related shows – was featured in The Telegraph’s regular ‘My Saturday’ slot, detailing his usual routine on the first day of each weekend.
The backlash was swift, with journalists picking up on Wallace’s various revelations, after he gave details of his home life including the time he spent with his son (commenters said not enough), time on his computer game and the fact that he hadn’t wanted his youngest child, so he cut a deal whereby the pair went on holiday alone once a year.

There have already been several hundred complaints to Ofcom over Gregg Wallace’s “documentary” The British Miracle Meat, which aired on Channel 4 in July, and introduced the nation to the supposed rise in lab-grown meat derived from human flesh.
This groundbreaking satire was an instant viral hit, but seemed to divide the nation between those who thought it was a genius piece of television, and those who were disturbed, disgusted, or even duped.
But this is far from the first time that British television has controversially traumatised the nation: The British Miracle Meat is merely the latest in this country’s rich tradition of using dystopian TV shows and hoaxes to permanently scar the public. Let’s take a look (if you dare) at this particularly bleak area of British TV history, most of which you’ve probably long-since wiped from your memory (sorry):

MasterChef has returned for its 19th season on BBC One – with a small but significant tweak to the rules.
The competitive cooking series, starring John Torode and Gregg Wallace, sees a group of aspiring chefs battle it out for the culinary crown.
Near the beginning of Monday night’s (10 April) episode, the two judges informed the chefs that they would wait outside the kitchen while their dishes were being prepared.
Wallace and Torode would then sample each competitor’s dish from a separate dining room.
“You’ll have one hour and 20 minutes to cook your dish,” Torode explained to the candidates. “Our MasterChef floor manager will be keeping you to time.”
In previous seasons, the judges were allowed access to the kitchen in order to inform contestants of their remaining time, announcing at the end that their time is up.
On social media, fans of the show complained that this role has now been outsourced,...

The BBC is handing one of its juggernaut shows a multi-season renewal and moving production outside of London for the first time since 2001.
Cooking competition series “MasterChef,” produced by Banijay U.K.-owned Shine TV, has been renewed for six more seasons, and is moving from London to Birmingham from 2024. The relocation is part of the BBC’s six-year “Across the U.K.” strategy, which was first announced in March 2021 and committed $978 million to expanding key services outside of London and further afield in the U.K. The popular culinary show was filmed in Kent from 1990 to 2001, but has been shot in East London’s 3 Mills Studios since 2014.
Alongside “MasterChef,” the BBC has also renewed “MasterChef: The Professionals” and “Celebrity MasterChef” through 2028, Variety has confirmed. These shows will also move to Birmingham from 2024, where they’ll be filmed in the new Digbeth Loc. Studios complex, which was set up by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight.

Globalisation isn’t just about lax child labour laws lowering the price of t-shirts; it also has its downsides. Global markets have a tendency to replace local idiosyncrasy with the accessibly bland. Should, for instance, the makers of Sweden’s chocolate Plopp Bar ever branch out into English-speaking territories, they’d be forced to rename their product to something much less funny, and we’d all be the worse off for it.
Murderville, a US series based on BBC Three’s Murder in Successville, is worse off for just that reason. In the transatlantic translation of the semi-improvised detective comedy, a niche element has been dropped, and with it, much of the original’s charm. Here’s the premise: every episode, a celebrity guest is thrown amongst a regular cast of comedy actors to solve a murder alongside the lead detective. This spoiler-free review is based on the first two episodes.
There’s a Woody the Woodpecker cartoon where Woody starts to fall from a height, then double takes, flaps his wings and soars into the sky saying, ‘Hey! I forgot I was a bird!’
Every so often, TV pulls the same trick. It goes along, airing detective shows and cooking shows and superhero shows and property programmes, falling, falling, falling… and then it suddenly remembers, ‘Hey! I forgot I was Television! I’m a box of mad, uncontainable dream magic conjured by imagination wizards who send stories through the air! Hop it, Gregg Wallace. I’ve got flying to do.’
And then it airs something like The Third Day, which is untethered by genre or tradition or a trackable plot, and unlike anything you’ve seen on television for a long, long time.
The Third Day: Summer is a trip.

Exclusive: MasterChef is officially back in production in the UK after Shine got cameras rolling on spin-off show MasterChef: The Professionals last week.
Filming is underway on Season 13 of the professionals’ franchise at 3 Mills Studios in London, with Marcus Wareing, Monica Galetti and Gregg Wallace resuming their hosting and judging duties — albeit with a socially distanced twist.
MasterChef: The Professionals is the first of the UK MasterChef brands to go into production in the pandemic era. Celebrity MasterChef is currently broadcasting on BBC One but wrapped just before lockdown in March.
3 Mills Studios has been MasterChef’s home in the UK for a number of years and it is understood that the large studio space used to house the show has been an advantage in getting production underway.
A MasterChef spokeswoman said: “We are ensuring that all Covid-19 filming protocols are being adhered to as set out in industry-wide filming guidelines published last week.

Viacom’s Channel 5 has bagged another couple of BBC presenters to make an event show about the climate change emergency.

The Apprentice is back! Here's one geek's moral struggle with his enduring love of the BBC reality game show...
The start of a new series of The Apprentice always seems to creep up on me. Somehow it isn’t until I hear Prokofiev’s Dance Of The Knights blasting through my living room on the first trail that I become aware of its imminent arrival, and it always fills me with the same feeling of slightly shameful excitement. I’m really not a fan of the term ‘guilty pleasure’, as nobody should be made to feel guilt simply for enjoying something that the cool kids don’t, but The Apprentice is the only show I can think of that I genuinely feel bad for enjoying so much. It’s easy to see it as a parade of wankers who you wouldn’t want to sit near on a train,...

It’s hard not to be won over by the enthusiasm of Time Commanders’ presenting team…
This review contains spoilers.
I was wrong to question the wisdom of hiring Gregg Wallace for this gig - it’s all down to love. Wallace loves presenting Time Commanders. He loves it even more than he loves sticky toffee pudding, and he regularly makes the kind of bedroom noises about sticky toffee pudding you’d bang on the ceiling to complain about. Look at his elated face when those French calvary attacks destroyed Wellington’s right flank this week. Hear him “Waaaaaaaaaayy” and “COO-hoo-hooooo” and purr “Gooooood plaaaan, goooood plaaaaan” like a Furby having its tummy rubbed. You’d need a heart of stone to begrudge him this job.
Also in his favour, Wallace offered more in the way of strategic tips in episode two, perhaps because he was faced...

Time Commanders is back! But is the revival a magnificent victory or ignominious defeat?
This review contains spoilers.

Prior to episode one of the revived Time Commanders, it would have been fair to describe my knowledge of the Punic Wars as ‘not extensive’ and even fairer to describe it as gleaned entirely from this Eddie Izzard routine. Post-episode one, I don’t mind saying that I picked up a few things.
I learned that Carthaginian leader Hannibal, for instance, had the look of Michael Sheen playing the lead in a CG animation biopic about Beppe from EastEnders. Roman general Scipio (pronounced Skippy, oh – the disappointed utterance of someone discovering the famous bush kangaroo pleasuring herself against a Eucalyptus tree) however,...

We’ve taken a pen to the UK Christmas TV and radio schedules and circled the shows we’re looking forward to. Add yours below!
Amid the cosy repeats, big movies and inescapable cranberry-stuffed cookery shows on TV this month are a few original gems. Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton’s Inside No. 9 festive special The Devil Of Christmas (Tuesday the 27th of December, 10pm, BBC Two) is top of our must-watch list. Hot on its heels is Yonderland’s family friendly Yonder Yuletide (Saturday the 24th of December, 6.30pm, Sky One). Another for families on Sky is the Christmas Day Jasper Fforde adaptation The Last Dragonslayer, while Channel 4 has the non-festive-but-essential-for-fans-of smart-sci-fi Humans series two finale (Sunday the 18th of December, 9pm).

Gregg Wallace would want ''a lot of money'' if he was asked to join 'MasterChef Australia'. The 51-year-old presenter, known for hosting the UK version of the cookery show, has admitted it would take a mega-deal to persuade him to up sticks and front the series Down Under. Speaking exclusively to Bang Showbiz, he explained: ''I have only been on it once and that is when they visited England, so I have no immediate plan to go to Australia. I'd like it very much but it is a very long way away. ''I think they would have to pay me a lot...

Gregg Wallace won't return to 'Saturday Kitchen'. The 51-year-old presenter fronted the first series of the cookery show in 2002, before being replaced by Antony Worrall Thompson just 12 months later, but he has admitted there's no way he'd slip back into his apron when current host James Martin steps down later this month. Asked if he'd return to the tummy-gurgling show, he exclusively told Bang Showbiz: ''No, because I think you have to give up every Saturday morning and I don't think I've got it to give. I would rather fulfill the work obligations I have got at the moment. I...

'MasterChef's Gregg Wallace wants to have more children. The 50-year-old judge, who already has two teenage children Tom and Libby from his second marriage to Denise, is keen to start a little family with his soon-to-be wife Anna-Marie Sterpini, 29, despite their 21-year age gap. Speaking to the Daily Mirror newspaper, he said: ''Anna is 29, Italian and wants to start a family so the chances are we will. In fact, you can pretty much guarantee it - otherwise her father will garotte me!'' And despite three failed marriages and having to postpone his wedding to Anna once already, the TV presenter...
