World No. 5 Jessica Pegula and the defending champion Ons Jabeur have signed up to play the 2024 Charleston Open in South Carolina.
The Charleston Open is synonymous with being the oldest all-women's tennis tournament in the United States, having been a staple on the Wta calendar since its inception in 1973 (except 2020 due to Covid-19), the same year the women's governing body was formed.
A host of the world's greatest tennis players on the Wta tour have played and won this tournament in the past, such as Chris Evert (eight-time champion), Martina Navratilova, Tracy Austin, Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis, and Serena Williams.
In 2022, the tournament commemorated its 50th year of staging the event at Daniel Island by unveiling its renovated Credit One Stadium, which offered significant upgrades in seating options and enhanced hospitality experiences.

Aryna Sabalenka finally made that big step this year, becoming world number one on the Wta Tour and a Grand Slam champion.
2023 was a year of making dreams come true for Aryna Sabalenka, who achieved quite a few things this year. One of the big achievements happened pretty early in the season as she won her maiden Grand Slam trophy at the Australian Open.
She would go on to become world number one later on, and the crucial part of that was simply her finally maturing as a player. Physical dominance was her calling card for much of her career, but the mental fortitude was never there.
It was there this year that former world number one Tracy Austin singled out as the crucial part of her breakthrough, when talking to tennis.com.
We’ve long known about Aryna Sabalenka’s physical power and tennis skills. But this year was her big mental breakthrough.

Carlos Alcaraz had a really interesting summer, winning two grass trophies, which basically nobody really saw coming.
Alcaraz himself admitted that playing on grass was pretty tough for him before the grass season rolled around, but it didn't look like that. Well, it kind of did in the beginning because his Wimbledon preparation event was the Queen's Club tournament, which he would end up winning.
Before winning the event, Alcaraz faced qualifier Arthur Rinderknech, who pushed him really hard and almost beat him. Had he beaten him, Alcaraz wouldn't have had the Queen's run, which proved vital for his Wimbledon success.
Former number one Tracy Austin talked about that for tennis.com, wondering what would have happened with Alcaraz's Wimbledon chances had he crashed out early to Rinderknech.
In June, Alcaraz began his grass-court season with a career record of 4-2 on the surface. He’d also just suffered...

Jannik Sinner had a great end to the 2023 season, one that made him a contender for any tournament that he enters in 2024.
The young Italian has been considered the rising star on the Atp Tour for a few years now, but it just seemed that he missed the big result that would solidify his position in the Top 10 of the Atp Rankings.
This year, he got that triumph when he won the Atp 1000 tournament in Toronto, and after that, Sinner continued proving his qualities, beating Novak Djokovic at the 2023 Atp Finals.
According to former world no. 1, Tracy Austin, who spoke to Tennis.com, even though we used to refer to Sinner as the future of tennis, the future is now, as he's proved he's the present.
"For several years, we’ve been calling Jannik Sinner the future of tennis. Well, 2023 revealed that the future is now. This was Sinner’s breakthrough season into the elite.

Iga Swiatek didn't have the type of year she had in 2022, but she did well enough to finish the year as world number one on the Wta Tour.
The season was very challenging as she faced a lot of players who were playing the best tennis they had ever played. Aryna Sabalenka never played as well as she did this year; neither did Elena Rybakina.
Coco Gauff found her tennis in the second half of the year, and it made everything tougher. Events where she traditionally dominated, such as the Roland Garros, proved quite challenging to win, but she won it.
It took a lot of adjusting and growing, and she endured all of that to ultimately become an even better version of herself on the court. Tennis.com's Tracy Austin was amazed by what she saw this year.

Novak Djokovic finished 2023 as world number one on the Atp Tour, and that's not a coincidence because he was the best player this year.
We could go over the numbers to show you how Djokovic ended up being the best player, but if you followed the season even semi-regularly, you already know that.
Just the fact that he won three out of four Grand Slam trophies shows you how good he was. He wasn't the only good player this year, but out of all that competed, the Serbian does stand out.
You'd have very few people willing to argue that he wasn't the best player this year. According to former Wta legend, Tracy Austin, who talked to Tennis.com, Djokovic had an incredible year and continues to improve at 36.
What an incredible 2023 Novak Djokovic had. To win three majors in his age-36 year shows that his hunger to excel never lets up.

Tracy Austin had the expectations of a nation on her shoulders at one point in her career, so she knows very well how it felt for Coco Gauff during the US Open.
Austin is a former player who won 30 titles in her career and was number one on the Wta Tour at one point. She also won two Grand Slam trophies, which Gauff has yet to do. Nobody questions whether Gauff will do it, especially after she won her maiden Grand Slam trophy against Aryna Sabalenka in pretty difficult circumstances.
While it might have looked pretty easy on the court, it really wasn't. She was under tremendous pressure to deliver a good result, especially as she approached the prize. As someone who carried the hopes of an entire nation, Tracy Austin knows how difficult it is.

Coco Gauff can mount an assault at the World No. 1 ranking in 2024, and there is a feasible chance it could happen as early as the first half of next season.
Gauff finished the 2023 season at a career-best ranking of No. 3, replacing Jessica Pegula as USA's top-ranked woman in the process. Since she broke the world's Top 10 in the summer of 2022, Gauff has never looked back and is now aiming to climb to new heights next year.
The 19-year-old had a stunning campaign during the US swing, where she won three titles, including a maiden Grand Slam. Gauff joined a gaudy list of former American players who won a Grand Slam as teenagers in the Open Era. These included Chris Evert, Tracy Austin, and Serena Williams.

After a breathless fortnight at Flushing Meadows Coco Gauff emerged the new US Open champion and that is only half the story.
Gauff wrote her name in tennis folklore by achieving a number of firsts during the two weeks. After entering the tournament with the best winning run of any player, winning 11 of her 12 matches during the US swing , the 19-year-old put a capstone to her career-best win streak by winning a maiden Grand Slam title.
Gauff stunned Wta's new No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in front of sold-out Arthur Ashe Stadium, who cheered vociferously for tennis' most precocious talent since a young Serena Williams dazzled these courts en route to her first major title over two decades ago.

Coco Gauff won the 2023 US Open after beating Belarus' Aryna Sabalenka, and as always with the young American, it couldn't be without matching or breaking a record.
Since breaking out at the age of 15, it was obvious that Coco Gauff would be the next big thing on the Wta Tour. It took four years, but still a teenager, the 19-year-old won her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open .
Drawing parallels with Serena Williams is by no means a small feat. When Serena clinched the US Open title in 1999, the tennis world was awestruck. A 17-year-old, brimming with audacity, had conquered one of the most prestigious tournaments.
The gravity of such an achievement becomes all the more pronounced when you consider the sparse occurrence of such moments in tennis's Open Era. Fast forward to 2023, and the courts of Flushing Meadows once again bore witness to history being crafted.

Iga Swiatek won't be the highest-ranked player on the Wta Tour on Monday after the 2023 US Open , as she'll lose the spot to Aryna Sabalenka .
For over a year, it seemed that no one would be able to stop the 22-year-old Pole from occupying the top spot in the Wta Rankings . However, times changed, and Aryna Sabalenka had a chance to dethrone Swiatek at almost every event that they played recently .
Another one of those chances came at the 2023 US Open, and the Belarusian needed to do one simple thing to overcome Swiatek in the rankings, reach the same round as her opponent. That happened on Saturday, when Sabalenka defeated Clara Burel , and the ball was on Swiatek's side.
However, the current world no. 1 couldn't defeat Jelena Ostapenko in her fourth-round match , meaning that regardless of the result of Sabalenka's match against Russia's Daria Kasatkina on Sunday, she will become...

Nick Kyrgios wasn't too impressed with the comments of former player Tracy Austin who talked about Kyrgios' stance on not wanting to play tennis for too long.
Nick Kyrgios's stance on retiring early from tennis has been known for a very long time as the Australian simply doesn't enjoy grinding in the way the sport and the Atp Tour demand. He certainly wouldn't enjoy doing that as a 30-year-old, which is why he recently admitted that he won't play in his thirties.
It also shouldn't be a surprise to anybody who is remotely familiar with the Australian, but the stance saddened former player Tracy Austin, who won two US Open singles titles and is of the opinion that players should cherish any moment on the courts, especially as retirement nears.
I kind of find it sad you're playing a professional sport & you just don't absolutely love it. You don't drink it up.

Melbourne, Jan 18 (Ians) World No 1 Iga Swiatek of Poland has soared into the third round of the Australian Open, overcoming a pair of late-set stumbles here at Rod Laver Arena to dismiss Colombian Camila Osorio.
Swiatek closed out a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Osorio in 84 minutes to win her 12th straight second-round match at a major. The Pole star hasn’t lost before the third round of a major since the 2019 US Open.
Swiatek has now won 53 of her first 65 main-draw Grand Slam singles matches. In the Open Era, only six players had more such wins after their first 65 matches in majors: Margaret Court (61), Monica Seles (60), Chris Evert (57), Martina Hingis (56), Billie Jean King (56) and Tracy Austin (54).
Osorio’s abilities to hyperextend rallies and change the direction of the ball down the line at a moment’s notice allowed her to hang with the World No.1 in a number of close games.

Wallace was referring to his disappointment with the ghostwritten memoirs of a tennis pro, but a new documentary about the legacy of a once-famous boxer bears out his assertion. In The Good Son: The Ray Mancini Story—a kind of second-rate TV movie for sports fanatics, replete with chintzy aesthetics and a score better suited to melodrama —Mancini himself dictates his personal history as if he were regaling company over dinner, meandering through long-winded anecdotes as though his every formative experience were inherently fascinating. Former teen tennis star Jennifer Capriati was rushed to a Riviera Beach, Fla., hospital early Sunday (June 27). Paramedics responded to a possible overdose emergency call from her hotel.
TMZ spoke with Capriati's father, who says she's recovering well.
Capriati was the Tracy Austin of the early 1990s, turning pro at the unprecedented age of 13. She was a semifinalist at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open in 1991, took a break from the tour in the mid-'90s and eventually coming back to win the Australian Open in 2001.
She has 15 career titles, including three Grand Slams. She also won a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics. But she went through some tough times in her late teens.
At 18 she moved out of her parents' home and into her own apartment. In May 1994 she was arrested in Coral Gables, Fla., for possession of marijuana. Two teen pals with her were charged with possession of heroin and suspected crack cocaine.
