The South Riding star on the dearth of funny roles for women, dance-offs and why she's only ever spotted in Waitrose
Did you have a nice Christmas?
It was lovely. We were at home in London and then up in North Yorkshire, where my best friend has just moved on to a pig farm.
What was your favourite present?
Oh… erm… I'm never that into presents. I don't mean to sound like a total martyr but I can't even remember what I was given. I got a vegetable strainer, which I quite like. It's yellow.
You are about to appear at the Hampstead theatre in Di and Viv and Rose, a play written by Amelia Bullmore, which features three strong, funny female characters. Is it rare for women to find original material like that to act in?
Yes, massively. Very few people are doing it. Julia Davis is a huge...

In just a short decade, female comics have gone from virtual anonymity to celebrity
I don't know whether you've noticed but there are a lot of funny girls about these days, and I don't mean funny peculiar. I refer of course to the recent rush of women into the comedy business. This sudden avalanche - or so it seems - has had a dramatic impact on the whole face of humour, and not simply by sheer gender or pure numbers, but by the effect it has had on men's humour too.
Paul Manzell is owner of the Comedy Workshop in Houston. "Nationally we are seeing more comics than ever before. There's more latitude for women now than there was five years ago." Equally important, he believes, is the fact that women entering the market has broken new frontiers in funniness. They have created fresh trends and forced men to adapt their material.

Just who are the geekiest computer geeks of the large and small screen? Here’s Michael’s list of suggestions…
Jim Carrey had a point when he said, “Free cable is the ultimate aphrodisiac”, as frankly, anyone who can hand out free cable is going to be popular.
However, even The Cable Guy might find his social influence supplanted these days by the nearest computer geek. Gradually, computers have developed from a niche interest into something that everyone depends on to get through life. As a result, the computer geek has enjoyed a transformation from outcast to linchpin.
The geek is a stock character of both the big screen and the small. A character such as Garth from Wayne's World doesn't fit into our narrow definition of a computer geek. Does he use his Amiga to create a colourful poster for his friends’ rock concert? Yes. Does he put a...

The Hurt Locker (Summit Entertainment) Absorbing character study follows the leader (Jeremy Renner) of a bomb squad unit in Iraq and his growing addiction to the adrenaline-fueled life and death edge that he and his men must walk on a daily basis. Director Kathryn Bigelow, an unheralded great filmmaker for nearly two decades, has finally hit paydirt with this gut-wrenching examination of war as drug, as opposed to hell. That said, The Hurt Locker is 2/3 of a great movie that takes a wild left turn in a subplot involving Renner’s character and that of a local boy to whom he takes a shine, and never quite recovers its momentum. In spite of that hiccup, it remains one of the best films of 2009 and, thus far, the finest cinematic exploration of America’s war in the Middle East. Also available on Blu-ray disc, in...
