Orchestrator of Storms: The Fantastique World of Jean Rollin, from here on simply Orchestrator of Storms, is a long overdue examination of the works of French filmmaker Jean Rollin, a man who has been labelled everything from an auteur to a pornographer and a hack.
Writer/directors Dima Ballin and Kat Ellinger have worked together on several previous documentary shorts about genre films and filmmakers such as The Tale of Mr. Corman and Mr. Poe and The Magnificent Obsession of Michael Reeves as well as on individual projects. However, coming in at an hour and fifty-two minutes Orchestrator of Storms is anything but short.
Orchestrator of Storms picks up almost from the moment of Rollin’s birth to a father who worked in the theatre and a mother who had been an artist’s model. It was his mother who raised him after his father left. The film explores how...

Nigel Wingrove, founder of Salvation Films and the UK Redemption Video label, was the first person to give serious video releases of films by oft-banned Euro-horror filmmakers such as Jess Franco and Jean Rollin. He also produced some magnificently blasphemous nunsploitation. He is still the only filmmaker to have a film banned in Britain purely on the grounds of blasphemy. Always one to stretch the boundaries of filmmaking as well as good taste, Wingrove then founded The Satanic Sluts, a cadre of goth chicks who were photographed, filmed, and did live performance art that was so atrocious they were banned from many British clubs. The whole thing blew up when Russell Brand, who was having a fling with one of the Sluts, found out she was the granddaughter of Andrew Sachs, a very famous and beloved British character actor. Brand made a prank phone call to...

As I mentioned in my overview of 2013's best horror-friendly albums, it's been a bountiful year for terror tunes... and I wouldn't want to neglect the amazing visuals that accompanied so many of those sinister sounds. As there were legions of worthy candidates to chose from, and some genres tend to lean more heavily toward horror content than others, I decided my favorite vids from across the spectrum of musical categories – pop, Edm, alt-rock, metal, industrial, hip-hop, experimental and so on. I also went with alphabetical order by artist, to avoid the whole apples-to-oranges thing between musical styles. Many of these vids have been featured on our pages in 2013, while several made their world premieres right here. A few of these clips are totally unsafe for work viewing, but assuming you've got an age-appropriate viewing audience gathered around the monitor, it's time to shake your blood with a visual cornucopia of rock and shock.

The nuns in these films are not like the nice little nuns that educated me. They are frequently lascivious, prone to baring their breasts, often in league with Satan or standing up for women’s rights.
Nuns make for great exploitation fodder. We don’t know what happens behind the abbey doors so we can posit all sorts of wild imaginings. The sexy nun is both kinky and profane, a forbidden delight and exploitation filmmakers usually imagine them as sex-crazed deviants who actively enjoy breaking their betrothal to God.
You will find a wide range of nuns in this list – killers, psychos, pioneers, perverts to tickle your fancy. Now, don’t forget your Hail Marys for looking at this sinful list.

London – The British censors have given the all clear for a DVD release of experimental short film, Visions of Ecstasy, the only film ever to have been outlawed here for blasphemy. Directed by Nigel Wingrove, the experimental film features scenes of Jesus being seduced on the cross and in 1989 the British Board of Film Classification declined to give it a rating because the scene in question “could constitute blasphemous libel.” The BBFC said at the time that cutting out the potentially blasphemous material would shorten the 19-minute film by half, so they refused to approve it.

Short film banned for 'blasphemous libel' since 1989 finally gets classification from BBFC
The controversial short film Visions of Ecstasy has been given an 18 certificate by the British Board of Film Certification (BBFC), after being denied one for 23 years and becoming the only film banned in Britain for "blasphemous libel".
Visions of Ecstasy contains a scene, as the BBFC describes it, "in which a figure representing St Teresa of Avila interacts sexually with a figure representing the crucified Christ". This was enough for it to fall foul of the Video Recordings Act 1984 (designed to take "video nasties" out of the market place), and the film, directed by Nigel Wingrove, subsequently became a cause celebre for censorship campaigners, but ended in failure at the European Court of Human Rights in 1996.
However, the BBFC remained inflexible until 2008, when the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act abolished the blasphemy and blasphemous libel offences. Wingrove was invited to resubmit his film.

Fab Press sent along word of the next batch of titles the British publisher is adding to its superb slate of horror-oriented books. These include a trio of new follow-ups/updates of popular previous titles.
Out in July is The Art Of The Nasty, a newly updated edition of Nigel Wingrove and Marc Morris’ study of video art for horror films tagged as “Video Nasties” in Britain. In addition to updated text containing new information about the controversy, the book also sports over 100 new video sleeves (bringing the total to nearly 450) bursting with graphic, lurid, shocking artwork. Currently, pre-orders are being taken for a Special Edition ($34.95) that will come with a dustjacket and signatures by Wingrove and Morris; a Trade Edition with a printed hard cover will subsequently become available.

Fresh off a limited theatrical release and shot in Robo-monstervision, a black-and-white retro style reminiscent of old television series and even older movies, Automatons is a tip of the hat to the imagination and humanity of shows such as The Outer Limits and One Step Beyond.
