InterviewIn this interview, Shyamaprasad speaks about directing Nivin Pauly and Trisha, his interest in human relationships and more.Facebook/Shyamaprasad RajagopalBy Nita “Hey, I’m a sweet guy!" says director Shyamaprasad, eliciting a laugh of disbelief from us. Disbelief because ‘sweet’ is not a term that we ever thought we’d associate with Shyamaprasad or a Shyamaprasad film, even though Hey Jude was termed as such by Tamil actor Trisha Krishnan, his heroine! With 13 films to his credit, over the past three decades, the National Award-winning filmmaker is known for an oeuvre that delves deep into the intricacies of human bonding, most often dark tales peopled with characters that are never simply black or white; films such as Ivide (2015), Artist (2013), English (2012), Ritu (2009), Ore Kadal (2007), Agnisakshi (1999) and the like. Shyamaprasad, never a conformist, has an increasingly contemporary approach to filmmaking. In the words of Ajayan Venugopalan, the scenarist of Ivide and English, he “prefers to invest his time and effort on his characters, their growth and their relationships than in the technicalities of filmmaking.” So, it really shouldn’t be surprising that Hey Jude, starring Nivin Pauly and Trisha in the lead, is a breezy entertainer that explores the relationship between two non-conformists - a hero with Asperger’s syndrome and a heroine with bipolar disorder, albeit in a very Shyamaprasad way. The film has all the makings of a hit and the director is in a jovial mood when we call him up for an interview. Excerpts from the interview: The light-heartedness of Hey Jude, threw us a bit... (Laughs) The audience tends to be a bit prejudiced when it comes to slotting my films into a genre. I think Arike (2012) is a sweet film as well. But that’s just me. Hey Jude is sweet because the story (by newbies Nirmal Sahadev and George Kannat) demanded it to be told as a rom-com, with lots of humour and music, even though it deals with a dark subject. This is your third film with Nivin (English, Ivide and Hey Jude). What's the equation there? He’s an actor that I like, both as a person and as a professional. Over the years we’ve developed a close bond. He is, I feel, someone who can identify with the youth of today and is an icon of today’s generation. Moreover, Nivin as an actor is one who is not afraid to push boundaries and is as keen about exploring and fleshing out characters as I am. Your casting is unpredictable, yet intriguing. Like Nivin's character with grey shades and Prithviraj's Varun Blake, the anglicised Malayali for instance. It’s purely based on the subject. Getting Trisha on board for Hey Jude, for example, was a coup of sorts but the role demanded a modern young woman, who does not have much command over Malayalam and I thought that she gave a brilliant performance as the bubbly Crys. I’ve been fortunate that all my heroes/heroines thus far have been played by fabulous actors. All I really needed to do was help them understand the characters and the situations the characters go through. I hold their hands a bit and allow them to explore. Jude, like most of your characters, is multifaceted… Well, human dreams are multifaceted and so are my characters. I’m not interested in typical heroes and heroines, in stereotypes. That, I feel, is both my strength and my weakness as a director. Being one of the few established directors, is it a challenge, to constantly think contemporary, be it in genres, themes, or storytelling style? I don’t like to rest on past glories and values. I am willing to understand and move with the times. And that’s not only regarding my craft but my very outlook on life. It’s part of my nature, really, an automatic process. I find happiness in keeping abreast with the latest in technology, storytelling, style of filmmaking and so on. I think it’s very important to be current because modern audiences expect that. For example, if you are making a film on the struggle for Independence, you have to approach it with present day sensibilities and I don’t mean making it fashionable. As a director, one needs to think how one can renew the subject and present it in a fresh way by looking both inwardly and outwardly. Agnisakshi was an examination of patriarchy; Ore Kadal talked about extramarital relationships; English delved into the loneliness of expatriate life, Artist explored contrasts between selfishness and selflessness, Ivide was a crime drama. Each of your subjects are strikingly different. How do you choose your stories? I choose stories that fascinate me, stories that I come across in publications and books or when interacting with people or watching people. I am constantly looking for good themes for my films. The idea for Hey Jude, for instance, came while I was chilling out at Beatles, a café by the beach in Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram. Being a music fan, ‘Hey Jude,’ a favourite number by the Beatles band, played through my mind and I thought that I should make a movie on a guy called Jude. Then, the character and story were given a definite structure and style during my interactions with Nirmal, a United States-based filmmaker and writer (the director of upcoming Prithviraj-starrer Detroit Crossing), who was an associate director on the set of Ivide, which was set in Atlanta. I like to be a part of the scriptwriting process and am very acutely involved in fleshing out the characters and their relationships. You like delving into the complexities of relationships. What is it that fascinates you about their interplay? I think relationships are the crux of any and all art forms. Art is a mirror for interpersonal relationships and introspection as well. I can’t just write a poem or story of a tree, for example, without exploring its relationship to humans, society, to the self. Any director worth his salt should examine the interplay. Admittedly, I go in a bit deeper. Interesting also how you cherry-pick newcomers - Nirmal, Ajayan, writer Joshua Newtonn (Ritu and 'Off Season’- Kerala Café), cinematographer Gireesh Gangadharan (Hey Jude), and musician Shankar Tucker (English). I’m a great admirer of their talents, more than anything else. Most of them have had remarkable achievements before I signed them on. I thought Ajayan’s comedy web series Akkarakazhchakal was brilliant. He has a great mind and a flair for comedy. Gireesh spectacularly filmed Angamaly Diaries. Nirmal is a meticulous writer and filmmaker… They are all good friends of mine, which slowly turned into good professional relationships. What next? I am working on a couple of scripts. I usually start work on my next film during the post-production of a film to take my mind off it for a bit. I’m in no rush. This interview was first published on Fullpicture.in. MollywoodThis film about an oddball pair makes us look beyond their eccentricities and see them as regular people.Sowmya RajendranShyamaprasad's Hey Jude is a sweet romance between a man who cannot understand emotions and a woman who swings between the extremes of them. I dread going for films where the characters are described as "oddball" because many a time, the filmmaker gets so carried away with establishing the "weirdness" that that's all the story becomes about. But that's why I liked Hey Jude – it isn't interested in turning the characters' oddities as a crutch, it makes us look beyond the eccentricities, to see them as regular people. Nivin Pauly plays Jude, a young man with a neurological condition (if you're a Lisbeth Salander fan, you'd make the diagnosis within minutes) that makes him...well, strange. He's very particular about the crispiness of his dosa, just how much his bread must be toasted and hugs a giant Nemo stuffed toy when he's upset. We've seen Fahadh Faasil play a role similar to this in North 24 Kaatham and comparisons are inevitable. However, the two films are different in what they want to achieve. While Fahadh's Harikrishnan goes on a journey that helps him loosen up so as to speak, Jude's "journey" is about accepting that he's different and most importantly, getting the people around him to acknowledge this. Jude is a sea away from the swashbuckling characters Nivin has played in the past (kudos to the make-up artist and stylist). As the overweight, vulnerable Jude who is stymied by the world around him, the actor manages to amuse us while drawing empathy. He's the sort of guy who mentally calculates the Bmi of a woman and declares, "Yes, you're fat", when she's asking him the dreaded, "Do you think I'm fat?" question. Trisha, as Crystal, comes as a revelation. Here's an actor who's mostly done "mass" mainstream films where she's been relegated to dancing with the hero. The few opportunities she has had to break away from formula films, she has delivered. But never has she been as convincing as she is in Hey Jude. Crystal, at first glance, appears to be one of those angelic women characters who emotionally rescue the damaged man, but there's more to her. It took me a while to get used to her new voice (dubbing by Sayanora Philip) but once that's settled, Trisha pulls off a very believable and likable Crystal. The bond between Jude and Crystal veers from little adorable moments to darker inner struggles – the staging of these scenes is done organically, without losing the lightness in tone (and the tone is unexpected in a Shyamaprasad film). The scene when Crystal tells Jude that he has nice eyes, for instance, has both actors at the top of their game. The shy blush that spreads on Jude's face and the bemused expression that Crystal wears can put a smile on the most cynical of us. The supporting cast – Siddique, Neena Kurup, Vijay Menon – is excellent. Vijay Menon as Dr Sebastian, especially, is a joy to watch. The battles between Siddique, who plays Jude's money-minded father, and his son, are hilarious. The former characterises all mental health issues as either "vattu" (madness) or "madi" (laziness) – so typical of Indian parents – and yet, the director manages to make us understand him without giving us an unrealistic change of heart. Aju Varghese appears in a lone scene and manages to make us howl with laughter. Much of the film is set in Goa. The languid pace in which the plot progresses might bother some but as a regular on Goa's sublime beaches, I liked the unhurried way in which Shyamaprasad tells his little story. Girish Gangadharan's camera captures Goa, the long stretches of the coast and the city, and turns the place into a quiet character in the film. When Jude enters and leaves Goa, or is exploring the city, the camera zooms out and shows us a panoramic view, breaking the narrative into episodes and plotting Jude's personal growth. There's a lot of music and singing in Hey Jude. The title itself comes from a Beatles song and the cafe Crystal runs, called 'The Beatles' cafe, has a band which plays songs regularly. The music, however, blends in and doesn't come in the way of getting on with the story. Hey Jude is a pleasant, well-told story that brings us closer to understanding differences, across the universe, without the tone ever turning preachy. What's not to like? MollywoodShot extensively in Kochi and Goa, the film is touted to be a musical romance.Digital NativeReports indicate that the Nivin Pauly and Trisha starrer Hey Jude is getting ready to hit the marquee on February 2. The film has reached the final stages of production and the promos are happening in full swing. While Nivin Pauly plays the lead role in the movie, it will mark Trisha’s entry into the Malayalam film industry. Despite being in the film industry for well over a decade and half, this is the first time she will be seen in a Malayalam movie. Directed by ace filmmaker Shyamaprasad, Hey Jude is bankrolled by Anil Kumar. While Nivin Pauly plays the titular role, Trisha will be seen as Crystal Ann Chakaraparambu aka Crys. Others in the star cast include Siddique, Neena Kurup, Vijay Menon and Aju Varghese. The songs for the movie have been composed by Rahul Raj, Ouseppachan, M Jayachandran and Gopi Sunder, with Ouseppachan working on the background score. Girish Gangadharan has cranked the camera for this venture and Karthik Jogesh is the editor. The teaser for the Aa Akashame song from the movie was released recently. The catchy song gives us more than a hint of what the film will be about. Shot extensively in Kochi and Goa, the film has Trisha playing a Goan girl. According to director, Hey Jude is a musical romance and Nivin’s role in it is very peculiar. In an interview given to the Times of India earlier, Shyamaprasad had said, “Nivin plays Jude, who is a peculiar character and is at odds with the world around him. Trisha’s character Crystal lives in Goa and, like Jude, is a bit of an oddball herself. The movie is about the interesting situations that happen because of their relationship, and how love and understanding transforms Jude’s life.” After 15 years in the Tamil and Telugu industry, Trisha finally takes on Malayalam with Hey Jude and the actor claims this is one of her most special films. While reports indicate that Hey Jude is slated to release on February 2, we are waiting for an official confirmation on this. Content provided by Digital Native.

MollywoodNivin plays a stiff introvert while Trisha's character is free spirited and encourages him to live a little.Tnm StaffThe teaser for the Aa Akashame song from Shyamaprasad's upcoming film with Nivin Pauly and Trisha is out. The catchy song, set to music by Gopi Sunder, gives us more than a hint of what the film will be about. From the promos so far, it's clear that Nivin will be playing an oddball character called Jude. The Aa Akashame song shows the actor to be a stiff introvert who is afraid to try anything new in life. His friend, played by Trisha, is far more free-wheeling and encourages him to live a little - from taking a dive in the pool to drinking some alcohol. We also get to see Jude's parents and a comic subplot involving a neighbour. The star cast includes Siddique, Aju Varghese, Neena Kurup, and Vijay Menon. The film marks Trisha's debut in the Malayalam film industry. Nivin has confessed in earlier interviews that he's been a fan of the actor ever since he watched her in Gautham Menon's Vinnaithaandi Varuvaya. The character of Jude is distinctly different from the characters Nivin has played so far and it will be interesting to see how the actor pulls this off. His Tamil debut, Richie, turned out to be a damp squib although his home production Njandukalude Naattil Oridavela was a box-office winner during Onam last year. Sung by Madhav Nair and with lyrics by Harinarayanan Bk, Aa Akashame has been received positively. Watch:...

EntertainmentThe Shyamaprasad film will mark Trisha's debut in the Malayalam industry.Tnm StaffYouTube screenshotThe trailer for the highly anticipated Nivin Pauly and Trisha-starrer Hey Jude was released on Friday. The Shyamaprasad film will mark Trisha's entry to the Malayalam film industry. As the posters and teaser of the film suggested, Jude, played by Nivin, appears to be an oddball who is very particular about the way he dresses and his routines. With a shirt buttoned all the way to the top and a pair of nerdy glasses, Nivin looks completely different from his stylish and swashbuckling avatar in Premam, the film which pushed him to superstardom. Actor Siddique, who plays his father, attests in the trailer that nobody can find a more upright young man than Jude. Trisha, who plays his best friend, seems to be the young woman who understands Jude's peculiarities. Does Jude fall in love with Trisha's character? Does her family stand in the way? The trailer throws some hints that way but that could be just to mislead us about the storyline. Towards the end, Jude extends his hand and says, "I'm Jude, nice to meet you!" hesitantly, as if practising this greeting to impress someone. Uploading the video on his social media pages, Nivin Pauly wrote: "One of the things I love about being an actor is playing someone who makes very different choices. Being Jude was challenging but at the same time fascinating. It is one among those characters I loved doing. Hey Jude is poetic, intriguing and cute. Thank you Shyamaprasad sir for this role. Trisha, welcome to Malayalam cinema! So, the wait is over! Presenting you the world of Jude..!" Nivin is currently shooting for Kayam Kulam Kochunni, a period film on the legendary Kerala highwayman. Meanwhile, Trisha has several projects in her kitty, including films where she plays the solo lead. Here is the video. ...
