The sort of platitudes that often accompany many retrospectives on classic albums, describing heroic narratives in which scenes are burst onto and names are cemented in history books, don’t necessarily fit the Smiths’s 1984 debut very well. Prior to the release of The Smiths, the band had already been voted Best New Act by NME readers. The band’s early singles received radio play from tastemakers like John Peel, and their live sessions for BBC proved so popular that they were rebroadcasted several times.
Frontman Morrissey was becoming a star in his own right, developing a reputation as a colorful interviewee and an unlikely trendsetter. The position of “voice of his generation” was up for grabs in the aftermath of Paul Weller disbanding the Jam, and this entirely new kind of pop personality—a melancholy shut-in from the economically depressed north of England, with Wildean affectations—was more than...

Killing Joke guitarist Kevin “Geordie” Walker’s influence is vast: Metallica attempted to emulate his guitar snarl on their cover of “The Wait”; Kurt Cobain admittedly ripped off his riff to “Eighties” for “Come As You Are”; LCD Soundsystem synthesized his riff on “Change” and turned it into “Losing My Edge.” Other artists who praised Walker’s playing and Killing Joke include Jimmy Page, Trent Reznor, My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, and all of Faith No More. Yet Walker himself never became a household name before his death on...

Reverend Richard Coles has been flooded with messages of support after sharing his “frustration” at the quiet announcement of his departure from Radio 4.
The TV personality will present his last show as the host of Saturday Live this weekend (25 March), as the show is relocated to Cardiff.
Despite Coles having co-hosted the weekly show since 2011, his departure from the BBC show was announced on Tuesday (21 March) with little fanfare.
In an interview with The Guardian, Coles shared his disappointment that the news hadn’t been shared publicly sooner, saying that he hadn’t had a single message from his supporters about his exit.
“I haven’t heard from any listeners yet,” he said. “I don’t think it’s been on Twitter or anything. Perhaps people just think, ‘Oh well.’”

Abba Voyage show will soon travel “around the world”, organisers have reportedly said.
The virtual concert, which sees hologram- style “Abba-tars” of the pop band performing a full setlist in a purpose-built arena, has seen enormous demand.
The unique concert, which opened last May, has sold over a million tickets.
Following its success, Universal Music Group has reportedly said that the show will soon go on tour around the world.
“Plans are now in development to take ‘Abba Voyage’ around the world,” said Universal Music Group chairman Lucian Grainge while on a company earnings call, reported Variety.
A representative for Abba Voyage declined to comment, but a source close to the project said that the focus was on London for the forseeable.
Abba, who formed in Sweden in 1972, are famous for multiple hits including “Dancing Queen”, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) and “Mamma Mia”.

The Glastonbury 2023 headliners have been announced by Emily Eavis.
The festival’s co-organiser shared the news in an article discussing “pipeline” problems related to the all-male headlining line-up.
Joining Elton John will be Arctic Monkeys on the Friday, headlining for their third time, with Guns N’ Roses playing the Saturday slot.
Eavis said that Guns N’ Roses replaced a female singer who “changed her touring plans”.
While Eavis didn’t name names, it’s strongly suspected she was alluding to Taylor Swift, who was originally set to perform in 2020 when the festival was cancelled due to Covid.
However, Eavis expressed excitement about the “Sweet Child O’ Mine” rockers’ Glastonbury debut, telling The Guardian: “They’ll be brilliant and provide something totally different to the rest of the headliners.”
She said that Lizzo will “open” for the band, with the “About Damn Time” singer receiving joint headline billing on the poster.

Billie Eilish spoke out strongly against the US Supreme Court decision to end the constitutional right to abortion from her position on stage at Glastonbury.
The 20-year-old singer told the enormous crowd in front of the Pyramid Stage, “Today is a really, really dark day for women in the US.
“I’m just going to say that because I can’t bear to think about it any longer.”
She went on to dedicate her song about older men who abuse their position, “Your Power”, to everyone affected by the decision announced earlier on Friday.
Eilish’s appearance at Glastonbury made her the youngest ever solo headliner in the Festival’s history.
Another performer to protest the decision was folk star Phoebe Bridgers, who made her debut on the John Peel stage and slammed the “old Supreme Court justices “who try to tell us what to do with our bodies.”

One of Ahmet Zappa’s favorite memories of Captain Beefheart is the time he called the Zappa household to relate a particularly memorable dream.
“The fucking greatest [call] that ever happened to me was when he called and said, ‘Hell-ooooo, is your mo-other there?'” Zappa tells Rolling Stone, imitating Don Van Vliet’s signature warble. “‘Because I had a dream I wanted to tell her about.'”
Gail Zappa wasn’t home, but Ahmet couldn’t fight his curiosity; he asked the Magic Band leader what he’d dreamed of.

Some bands reach greatness by inventing something new, others by reminding you of what you loved a long time ago. For Pip Blom, the 23-year-old sparkplug who leads the Dutch alt-rock band of the same name, the choice was clear. Growing up surrounded by peers who listened to Top 40 pop — “Jason Derulo, stuff like that,” she says dismissively — Pip and her younger brother Tender, 21, gravitated instead to the old Blur and Oasis records their parents played at home.

From fanzines to forums, Doctor Who fan opinion has evolved over the years
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Whenever an episode of Doctor Who is broadcast now it’s quite easy to get a sense of how it’s been received within online communities. Websites review the episodes and people comment on those, folk post on social media and forums, and podcasts offer dissection and discussion in the aftermath.
Prior to the internet, the main outlet for review and opinion pieces were the printed fanzines that sprang up in the late seventies and eighties. Prior to that the main source we have for viewers’ responses were the BBC Audience Research reports, which weren’t carried out for every story and mostly only looked at one episode per story. What’s interesting to see is how contemporary opinion doesn’t always match up with current...

Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott was sick of drawing fruit, flowers and vases in art class when he asked his teacher if he could draw posters for rock shows instead. He got the ok and began creating posters for his favorite groups — the Beatles, the Stones and Thin Lizzy — but soon started making up new band names as well.
“Def Leppard was one of them,” he recalls in the latest installment of Rolling Stone‘s “The First Time.” “It just sounded good — it was spelled correctly when I did it.

Mark E Smith 5th March 1957-24th January 2018
A mercurial maverick, Mark E Smith's was a survivor of the early punk movement whose creative output spanned four uninterrupted decades, thirty two studio albums and sixty six former band members. A true contrarian who orchestrated chaos, he rightly deserves the description of unique. Sometimes majestic, often a shambles, his performances could never be guaranteed or predicted. He hired and fired musicians like a malevolent monarch, and in the process created some of the most inspired and challenging music of any era. He defied definition, was as cantankerous as hell, but unlike Shane McGowan, alcohol didn't cease his output. When John Peel died the BBC invited Smith into the studio to speak of his former stalwart, the only coherent utterance was that he and Peel had never been friends, and the interview quickly had the plug pulled on it as Smith's ingestion...

I admit that on occasion I have been known to wake up in a good mood and feel quite chirpy. Unfortunately for me this happens one day a year at most…’ – Phill Jupitus
Why exactly would a nationally successful stand up comedian, chuck in the exhilaration and freedom of life on the road for endless Coldplay singles, arguments with BBC management, incredibly expensive coffee and an alarm clock set to 4.30am, five days a week?

Top Gun, the Smiths, The A-Team … popular culture reached its height in the 1980s – didn't it? Toby Litt on a decade he hated at the time, but is reluctantly starting to admire
There's a fantastically annoying ad on Spotify at the moment for yet another Hits of the 80s compilation CD.
