With the 2023 Truth Seekers Summit presented by Showtime taking place a day after former President Donald Trump was indicted for a third time, this time in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow set the tone of the event after receiving the Variety and Rolling Stone Truth Seekers Award, “The crisis we have right now in this work that we do is not a crisis about the truth,” she said in a sitdown with Variety’s Co-Editor-In-Chief Ramin Setoodeh. “The truth is the truth; the truth just exists.

Longtime “Daily Show” correspondent Roy Wood Jr. spoke about the future of late-night TV at Variety and Rolling Stone’s Truth Seekers Summit, presented by Showtime, saying he believes studios don’t realize that the more they look to downsize shows, the more likely they will face stiff competition from TikTok creators and other social media stars who can retain the rights to their content.
“I think the cheaper that they choose to make the product, the more accessible and affordable you make it for outside competitors to come in,” Wood Jr. said, when answering a question about if he was interested in hosting the Comedy Central talker following the exit of Trevor Noah, or any late-night show, in general.
“That’s the thing that I don’t think the entertainment studios understand is, if you want to get rid of an audience if you want to make the show a little smaller,...

When Dua Lipa’s disco-drenched Future Nostalgia came out on March 27th last year, the timing could hardly have seemed worse. With the terrifying scale of the Covid crisis just coming into focus, and much of the world going into lockdown, who wanted an album of high-energy, dance-all-night club music?
As it turns out, we all did. As disconnected as the album seemed from the moment, Future Nostalgia was undeniable — euphoric, cheeky, and defiantly ready to party: an escape, for sure, but also a joyful portent for a time when...

“As a stand-up comic I feel like I don’t need anyone because it’s a solo performance,” confesses “Baskets” star Louie Anderson. In our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video above), he continues, “You think you’re the greatest and funniest. You really think you’re a big shot sometimes. At least I do, earlier in my life especially. ‘Baskets’ was a great opportunity to go into a situation and not have the show depend on me. It made me better. I wasn’t the star. It was great for the whole experience.”
The fourth season of “Baskets” marked the last for the FX comedy. The series stars Zach Galifianakis, who plays a set of twin brothers trying to navigate life in Bakersfield, California. Spoiler alert: This article contains details of tonight’s series finale of FX comedy Baskets.
After four seasons on FX, the Baskets family is moving on.
Tonight, FX aired the final episode of the oddball comedy created by Jonathan Krisel, Zach Galifianakis and Louis C.K.—before the latter comedian’s fall from grace and subsequent removal from all his FX titles.
Running for four seasons and earning four Emmy nominations—as well as one statuette for co-star Louie Anderson in 2016—the strip-mall Western follows Chip and Dale Baskets, a pair of emotionally stunted, immature twins living in Bakersfield with their mother Christine (Anderson) who deal with trauma from the past while trying to figure out who they really are and what they want to do in the world. Centered primarily on Chip, who aspires to be a professional clown and sees those dreams dashed, Baskets traded as much in substantial,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the “Baskets” finale, Season 4 Episode 10, “Moving On” — including the ending.]
Going into a series finale without knowing what to expect is an exciting prospect in today’s day-and-age of writing toward an endpoint. Even the great shows tend to set up an ending where one big thing has to happen: Someone will rule the Iron Throne on “Game of Thrones”; The Jennings will survive or perish in “The Americans”; Selina will win the presidency or die trying in “Veep.” Even “The Big Bang Theory” built up to Sheldon and Amy winning the Nobel Prize.
But an ending for “Baskets” can’t be so easily anticipated. Last week’s penultimate episode closed with the Baskets family abandoning their plans to protest California’s high-speed rail plans, which would force them to close their rodeo. What seemed like a typical rallying cry for a high-stakes climax in court was overturned early, in favor of sending Chip (Zach Galifianakis) into internal reflection at...

Can Chip make it on his own during the fourth season of the Baskets TV show on FX? As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether a TV show like Baskets is cancelled or renewed for season five. Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feel frustration when their viewing habits and opinions aren't considered, we'd like to offer you the chance to rate all of the season four episodes of Baskets here.
An FX black comedy, Baskets stars Zach Galifianakis, Louie Anderson, and Martha Kelly, with Alex Morris recurring. The surreal series centers on rodeo clown Chip Baskets (Galifianakis), his twin, Dale (Galifianakis), and mother Christine (Anderson). In season four, Chip decides it is high time to move out, but has a hard time adapting, despite the...

Can a rodeo clown have an epiphany? That’s the question it feels like “Baskets” is proposing in its fourth outing. Professional clown Chip Baskets (Zach Galifianakis) has just finished a successful season with the Bakersfield rodeo, which is owned by his mother Christine (Louie Anderson). The business has paid off for them financially, but also by bringing together the family — even Chip’s egotistical twin brother Dale (also Galifianakis), who handled the finances, is back in the Baskets’ loving basket. So now what?
In the three seasons before this, Chip has been through the lowest lows. His clowning wasn’t respected, his French wife used him for a green card, he witnessed a friend’s sudden death, and he finally faced the truth he’d been repressing: that his father took his own life. Throughout it all, the show has maintained a darkly comedic and bittersweet tone as Chip...

A world in which kids are afraid of clowns is a world gone insane, Chip laments in this extended Season 4 trailer for FX’s Baskets.
In the acclaimed comedy’s new season, premiering Thursday, June 13 at 10/9c,
big changes are underway for the Baskets family. After 49 years, Chip (played by Zach Galifianakis) decides it’s finally time to move out of his mom’s place. But even with the help of Martha (Martha Kelly) and a life coach, he learns that leaving the nest is hard, to say the least.
Meanwhile, Christine (Emmy winner Louie Anderson) and Ken (Alex Morris...

“You just hope for something like this in your life to just come onto your doorstep,” reveals Louie Anderson about his Emmy-winning role as Christine Baskets on the FX comedy series “Baskets.” Anderson’s role as the much put-upon mother of grown sons (both played by Zach Galifianakis) has earned the comedian two consecutive Emmy nominations for Best Comedy Supporting Actor, with Anderson winning the award in 2016. In our exclusive webcam interview (watch the video above), Anderson describes how the actor’s own family influenced his performance as well as his excitement over the show’s recently-announced fourth season.

FX has renewed Zach Galifianakis' clown/family dramedy Baskets for Season 4.
The rodeo continues for Baskets. FX has officially ordered Baskets Season 4 (presumably with a side of curly fries).
Baskets occupies a unique space on television and is perhaps the most "dramedic" of all dramedies in recent years. There is truly bizarre humor here, befitting of Galifianakis' personal style, but the story of a family trying to stay together is also profoundly, bizarrely moving.

The Baskets Season 3 finale found the family reuniting for a tense New Year's Eve with Dale's second marriage falling apart and Christine potentially embarking on a second one of her own.

For Louie Anderson’s Christine Baskets, love is lovelier the second time around. Thanks to the chemistry and work turned in by actor Alex Morris, who came on the scene in Season 2 as Ken. Christine crossed paths in Denver with Carpet King Ken, and despite the long distance between him and Costco’s biggest fan in Bakersfield, this is proving to be no flash-in-the-pan romance. In fact, we learn, they just might wed. Morris is a longtime actor, Ovation Award winner and four-time NAACP Image Award winner who has appeared in the theater as well as TV and film. Step right up, ladies and gentlemen, for the third season of “Baskets,” which feels even more sure-footed in its playful pathos than ever before. For its first act, the Baskets family empire will put on a circus-rodeo, which matriarch Christine (Louie Anderson) purchased, to be run by son Dale (Zach Galifianakis) with his twin Chip (also Galifianakis) as the star clown. The series went to some dark places to reach this point, and putting on the show will be the next step in the evolution of this damaged yet lovably tenacious family.
The first episode back in particular feels like the natural extension of Season 2’s themes, especially with Christine. Her boyfriend Ken (Alex Morris) is still in the picture via FaceTime and as supportive as ever, and her optimism and confidence are at an all-time high. But true to form, there are shadows lurking beneath the laughs that are...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the “Baskets” Season 2 finale, Episode 10, “Circus.”]
After a year that saw the Baskets family driven apart, Season 2 wrapped by bringing them all together — in an unexpectedly endearing manner. Christine (Louie Anderson), who literally skipped town a few episodes prior and tried out a new family in “Denver” (Episode 7), made the bold choice to go into business with her boys instead of being taken care of by Ken (Alex Morris). He offered. She said no. And now they’re “building an empire” — a circus empire.
For as much as we loved Dale and Chip’s journeys in Season 2, which saw an increased focus on Chip being rewarded for hard work and Dale being punished for immature behavior, this finale’s focus on Christine was more than fitting. Louie Anderson earned an Emmy for his performance in Season 1, and, if we’re comparing the two for such purposes, this year’s turn was even better. He could have more gold in his future.
