Between Valentine’s Day and the long Presidents Day weekend, February is the perfect month to scoot out to Palm Springs for some fun in the desert sun.
The Modernism Week festival, which this year runs Feb. 15-25, is the centerpiece of the month’s events. “Modernism Week is the largest gathering of midcentury modern architecture and design enthusiasts in the US,” says Lisa Vossler-Smith, its CEO.
Highlights of its 19th year include tours of The Shag House, which brings to life the midcentury-inspired drawings of artist Josh Agle, better known as Shag; Wexler ’54, a post-and-beam home that represents one of the first collaborations between master architects Donald Wexler and Richard Harrison; and the city’s famous Villa Sierra “That Pink Door” house located near where the movie Don’t Worry Darling filmed. (The four-bedroom, 5,300-square foot Villa Sierra can be booked for stays through Natural Retreats, with some dates available for around $1,770 a night.

Tequila rocks at Hollywood events. Some prefer it neat. Nightlife entrepreneur Rande Gerber recommends his (with George Clooney) Casamigos brand on the rocks. Icy tequila can be refreshing and cinematic: the frozen margarita got its due in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s” brazen finale. Although there is a surplus of Piper-Heidsieck champagne for toasting, guests at the Oscars Governor’s Ball depend on sponsor Don Julio tequila to enhance the celebratory night.
Tequila’s rise as the spirit of choice in Hollywood has its origins in Los Angeles’ proximity to Mexico and embrace of Mexican cuisines and culture. Produced under strict government regulation in just five Mexican regions — predominantly Jalisco — the most sought-after tequilas are distilled from 100% Weber blue agave plants, which take five to 12 years to mature depending on where they are cultivated. Once ripened, the agave hearts are cooked and crushed; the extracted liquids ferment and...

Today’s celebrity chefs are treated like rock stars. But mostly male rock stars. Like many other professions, men have somehow garnered more fame and bigger paychecks than their female counterparts in the restaurant world.
The new Logo documentary “Hungry” aims to examine how and why that came to be. Filmmaker Patty Ivins (“Reversal of Fortune”) took a look at gender inequality in restaurant kitchens for the film.
Among the chefs she interviewed: Los Angeles-based Dakota Weiss, who owns Estrella and Sweetfin Poke; Pink Delongpre, owner of Bacon & Brine in Solvang, Calif.; and Sarah Kirnon, owner of Miss Ollie’s in Oakland.

ABC has just purchased a brand new sitcom about Top Chef Masters competitors, Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger.
Not many details have been released about the new project, but the show will take place in the 1980's and will be executive produced by Michael Eisner. With Feniger and Milliken having been business partners for the last 25 years and Milliken married to Feniger's ex-husband, this show could actually be pretty interesting.

Jennifer Garner was in Hollywood yesterday afternoon to celebrate the launch of the Frigidaire Kids' Cooking Academy and whip up some healthy treats with local students. The actress is teaming up on the new project with her charity of choice, Save the Children, chef Mary Sue Milliken, and Frigidaire. Each time a parent signs up to receive Jennifer and Mary Sue's daily cooking tips and kid-friendly recipes through the Academy, Frigidaire will donate $1 toward Save the Children's efforts to bring nutritious food to underprivileged children. We spoke to Jennifer at the event about why she loves meal time with her own family, her favorite part of each busy day, and her plans for Valentine's Day with Ben, Seraphina, and Violet. Here's what she had to say: On her most memorable family meal: It's not about one specific meal, it’s just about that time, and that quietness, and sitting down together.

Former Disney chief Michael Eisner, who is in talks to become chairman of Tribune Co.'s board, recently played reporter to write his upcoming book, "Working Together: Why Great Partnerships Succeed." Here is an e-mail he sent to friends about the book Wednesday.
Dear Friends,
As the summer comes to a close, I wanted to send you a note to let you know that I'm eagerly anticipating the release of my book, Working Together: Why Great Partnerships Succeed, which will be published by HarperCollins on September 14th.
This all began about a decade ago when I found myself trying to figure out why my partnership with Frank Wells at Disney was so magical for us. Then I started thinking about partnerships in general, about great combos in business and in life, about the elusive nature of "working together." We're all brought up in a world of sharing, from birth to at least through 6th grade,...

"Top Chef Masters" returns with more chefs who dare to put their reputations on the reality TV line.
We're definitely excited to see some of the new lineup, in particular Susan Feniger, a Los Angeles-based chef who is personable and hilarious, but is also known on TV for being one of the "Two Hot Tamales" with business partner Mary Sue Milliken (Ciudad, Border Grill).
But we're also psyched to see a lot of returning chefs like Ludo Lefebvre get a second chance. Can he prove himself and go further than he did last time or will the friction with Rick Moonen get the better of him.
Seeing these masters struggle just as much as the usual "Top Chef" competitors shows just how difficult these challenges are.
Check out this introduction to the chefs:
Be sure to also check out the lineup of special guests that will be testing the chef'testants.
