ER star Anthony Edwards made his Broadway musical debut Friday night as “Dr. Walker” in the Tony-nominated Girl From The North Country. With several members of the company out of the show because of Covid-19 infections, Edwards stepped in at the last moment (and after only an hour of rehearsal time) to ensure that the show would go on.
He starred opposite his wife, Mare Winningham, who was recently nominated for a Tony Award for her role.
Lead producer of Girl From The North Country Tristan Baker made a pre-show announcement to express his gratitude to the production’s swings and understudies, and let the house know they were in for an extra special show. Baker asked if “There was a doctor in the house” to play the role of Dr. Walker this evening, before surprising the audience with the...

The acclaimed Bob Dylan musical Girl From The North Country will play its final Broadway performance at The Belasco Theatre on Jan. 23, with producers saying they’re in advanced conversations with the Shubert Organization to re-open in the spring after the Omicron surge subsides.
The unusual announcement follows a similar plan confirmed by producers of Mrs. Doubtfire, which closed on Jan. 10 with the intention of returning to the Stephen Sondheim Theatre on March 14.
“Girl From The North Country is an important part of this season,” said Robert E. Wankel, Chairman and CEO of The Shubert Organization, in a statement. “We have always been supportive of this show, and we are excited about bringing it to another theater in the spring.”

The Hadestown re-launch will mark the first Broadway production to begin performances since the March 12, 2020, pandemic shutdown. New York Gov. How well can a parent ever really know a child?
Although Apple TV Plus’ new limited series “Defending Jacob” has a murder mystery at the center of the story, it is the larger, more relatable themes about how love for a family member can be tested that writer and executive producer Mark Bomback was most interested in exploring.
“I have four children and I live in the suburbs of New York, and my central preoccupation is how much I’m succeeding or messing up with raising my kids. Really the mysteries that come with being a parent is a subject that I’m fascinated with, so the fact that that was the underlying human story in this particular thriller, that was what really put it over the top,” he tells Variety.
Bomback created his eight-episode series by adapting William Landay’s 2012 novel of the same name. The novel was told in the past tense,...

In the 2000 gay-oriented romantic comedy The Broken Hearts Club, Matt McGrath’s character Howie perfectly sums up the representation of gay/bisexual men in film:
“There isn’t a movie in the cinema canon that depicts a gay character that we would aspire to be. What are our options… noble, suffering AIDS victims, the friends of noble, suffering AIDS victims, sex addicts, common street hustlers and the newest addition to the lot, stylish confidantes to lovelorn women. Just once I would like to see someone who is not sick, hasn’t been laid in about three months and is behind on his student loans.”
While Howie’s statement stands the test of time fourteen years after the fact, there’s no denying that there have been plenty of memorable and wonderful representations of gay/bi men in movies in spite of the obvious stereotypes and tropes they were meant to embody.

League Two Accrington Stanley condemned Middlesbrough to their second defeat in four days as they beat last year’s quarter finalists 2-1 at The Riverside.
Lukas Jutkiewicz’s ninth minute strike was cancelled out by Marcus Carver just before half time.
Piero Mingoia sealed the cupset in the 79th minute. But Boro will be frustrated by the amount of chances they wasted as they were the only side who looked like winning for the first 80 minutes.
The Teessiders were playing their first home game in the League Cup since they beat Yeovil 5-1 back in 2008. A run that has seen them clock up in excess of 3,500 midweek miles.
Their opponents Stanley were looking to avoid going out in the 1st round for the second year running.
It was the first time these two teams had met in any fixture and it was Stanley who came out on top in a very one sided game.

You know you are in David Mamet's world when the expletives fly rapid fire, one distasteful zinger after another, breaking every taboo. You laugh, and hearing the rhythms, you call it poetry. The title Romance may suggest a candlelit evening, but here that candle may be a stick of dynamite up our cultural ass. Four tight scenes performed in an hour and a half, Romance features a fine ensemble: Richard Kind, Darrell Hammond, Chris Bauer, Matt McGrath, Reg Rogers, Joey Slotnick and Joe Pallister, expertly directed by Lisa Peterson. Like the language, time zings by. Mamet's writing has never been this funny, or have I missed something in recent productions? Race seems more an acted out essay on that subject, Oleanna too, on the subject of sexual harassment to the point of who is manipulating whom. Romance adds slapstick and shtick...

The recent documentary Surfwise considers how children raised as ascetics grow up and struggle to make their way in a materialistic society. David Munro's debut feature, Full Grown Men, comes at the problem from the opposite direction. Matt McGrath plays a middle-aged family man and former class clown who still clings to the instant-gratification culture he grew up with: a world of action figures, kung-fu movies, sugar cereals, and amusement parks. Now 35 and having trouble dealing with his responsibilities as a husband and father, McGrath packs a bunch of his vintage toys in a suitcase and travels across Florida, planning to sell his collection, reconnect with his boyhood best friend Judah Friedlander, and go to "Diggityland." Not on his itinerary? Growing the hell up. Full Grown Men is intended as a commentary on a phenomenon that cartoonist Bill Griffith once dubbed "kidults": adults who dress, behave, and entertain.
