Six years ago, Laurie Metcalf shocked Emmy prognosticators by earning three acting nominations in the same year for her lead role on comedy “Getting On” and for her guest turns on sitcom “The Big Bang Theory” and drama “Horace and Pete.” This year, legend Martin Short could be on track to do something incredibly similar, appearing on the Emmy acting ballot three times for three different series: Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” and Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show” and “Schmigadoon!” He has the chance to not only pull off this impressive feat, but best it by one, too, with an additional bid as a producer.
By far the likeliest of Short’s possible nominations is for his scene-stealing, hilarious performance on “Only Murders in the Building.” He stars as forgotten theatre producer and true crime podcast aficionado Oliver Putnam, who teams up with his neighbors in New...

Martin Short turned 70 during the pandemic, and if it hadn’t been for the worldwide lockdown he’d probably still be on the road somewhere, doing his two-man vaudeville show with his old friend Steve Martin. It is, he recalls with a lot of affection and no small amount of wonder, nearly 50 years since he began a career in entertainment, and that journey has brought a lot of admirers, primarily for his work in musical theater and comedy.
On the quiet, however, Short is a damn fine dramatic actor, and his brief but indelible guest role in the hit Apple TV+ series The Morning Show recently brought him his 12th Emmy nomination since 1983. Short plays Dick Lundy, charismatic friend of Steve Carell’s Mitch Kessler, and, like Mitch, alleged to be a serial abuser of women. Dick Lundy sees Mitch as a kindred spirit, but Mitch refuses to see anything of himself in Dick,...

Returning to the Emmys as an acting nominee for the first time in 10 years, Martin Short is back in (pun intended) dramatic fashion despite being known as a comedy legend. Short’s nomination for Drama Guest Actor is his first solo nod since he was up for Drama Supporting Actor for his work in “Damages” in 2010. He appears only twice in his stirring turn as a sexual predator director in “The Morning Show,” the first of which is in the nominated episode “Chaos Is the New Cocaine.”
Recently ousted as the longtime and beloved host of the titular morning talk show, Mitch Kessler (Steve Carell) meets with friend Dick Lundy (played by Short) to discuss their shared woes as men taken down by the #MeToo movement. In just this one scene of his nominated episode, Short shows the layers of Lundy’s dark past and inhumanity as he unveils them to a shocked Kessler.

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon had wanted to find a project to do together ever since Witherspoon appeared on Friends playing Aniston’s sister in 2000. They found it with The Morning Show, in which the pair play anchors on a chaotic network morning show rocked by sexual harassment scandals. That is what Aniston, now Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, told me during today’s final panel for Apple TV+ at our livestreamed Contenders Television: The Nominees virtual event.
And then all hell broke loose, and the series became more timely than they could have imagined.
“It was the summer before we were getting ready to go, and then the #MeToo movement happened and we had to incorporate that into the show of course,” Aniston said during the panel, which also included co-stars Billy Crudup, Mark Duplass and Martin Short and EP and Emmy-nominated director Mimi Leder.

It was this day in 1934 that the duck who would become the world's most famous angry bird was born. Albeit, he was already fully grown, but still: in making his first ever animated appearance, Donald Duck began his ascent to stardom.
Donald, in a somewhat different form created by Dick Lundy, appeared in the Silly Symphony short, “The Wise Little Hen.” Life started off on a rough note for Donald, as he faked his way, as VP of the Idle Hours club, into not getting any corn -- and a kick in the butt from Peter Pig. Insult to injury!
Donald's a family man, with his longtime love Daisy (originally name Donna) and nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. Perhaps his highest honor came when his cartoon, "Der Fuehrer's Face," in which he dreams that he's a Nazi, won the 1942 Academy Award for Animated Short film.
