"Russia, what a f*cking mess! God, I miss the cold war."
The year was 1997 and actor George Clooney's star was on the rise in a big way. The former TV star had made the jump to the big screen the year before as the charismatic criminal Seth Gecko in Robert Rodriguez's vampire splatterfest, From Dusk till Dawn, and now he was People's Sexiest Man Alive, the new Batman in Batman & Robin and the headliner in DreamWorks' first feature, The Peacemaker. Clooney would take a drubbing for the schlockfest of a superhero movie that's biggest contribution to the franchise was bat-nipples, but The Peacemaker's success proved that he was leading man quality.
An action-thriller based on the book One Point Safe by Andrew Cockburn and Leslie Redlich Cockburn, the plot of The Peacemaker revolves around the theft of ten SS-18 Icbm nuclear warheads from a facility in Russia.

The cold war has been one of the most prolific themes in film. Up until the last decade, it has been the inspiration behind Hollywood's bad guy of choice, the Soviets (or more specifically, brooding Russians and, in the case of The Peacemaker, their eastern European associates). They've come in all shapes and sizes, and other than their fierce patriotism, the one thing they most have in common is their desire for nuclear weapons.
The 1997 flick The Peacemaker, is no exception to the “villainous Soviets” theme. Recently released on Blu-ray, it features George Clooney and Nicole Kidman teaming up to save New York from a possible terrorist attack. The film starts off quickly in suspense, with a suspicious looking eastern European officer taking us through the events that would become the main emphasis of the film. Interestingly crafted, the opening sequences were so great that it doomed the rest of...

Chicago – The Blu-Ray Round-Up has looked around the office after the dust has settled on the major September HD releases and realized that there are a few remaining titles worthy of a mention. Before frost warnings, Halloween decorations, and planning for Thanksgiving, pick up one of these five titles. You won’t regret it.
Note: The Round-Up is designed merely to present synopsis, cast & crew, tech specs, and special features information on titles that may otherwise fall through the cracks for your purchasing perusal. Having said that, “American Beauty” is a must-own in HD just for the gorgeous cinematography of Oscar-winner Conrad L. Hall and the film has held up much-better than the cynical haters would have you believe. It’s a great movie. And “Bored to Death” continues to be one of the more intriguing shows on cable. If we had to pick favorites it would be those two.
