As the world rings in 2023 with new resolutions and goals, TV soaps will also be switching things up with exciting new storylines and scandals.
After a busy Christmas period, which saw the exit of Danny Dyer and the shock revelation of a 12-year-old being pregnant on EastEnders, as well as the return of more long-lost relatives to Coronation Street and Emmerdale, you can expect 2023 to be an explosive year on screen.
Here’s our (spoiler-packed) guide to this year’s soaps...

It’s going to be another exciting year in Walford, with Linda Carter (Kellie Bright) struggling to rebuild her life alone after husband Mick (Dyer) went missing.
Pregnant Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) will see her relationship with Zack Hudson (James Farrar), the father of her child who she had a fling with, put to the test by a number of factors, including new and old faces.

Lady On Fire
Cutting edge French director and screenwriter Céline Sciamma has been appointed as president of the jury at the Giornate degli Autori (aka Venice Days), a sidebar to the Venice Film Festival. She will preside over a special jury made up of 27 young European cinephiles present in a campus. “[Sciamma] has thoroughly upended the basic structure of our society and masterfully created new images and new memories. With her latest film, ‘Petite Maman,’ she has provided further proof that the prevailing canon of film production can indeed be challenged,” said Venice Days’ artistic director Gaia Furrer. Sciamma’s earlier credits include: “Bande de filles” in 2014; “Tomboy” in 2011 and “Naissance des Pieuvres” in 2009. The appointment is a homecoming of sorts for the director of “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” ever since she was shortlisted for the 2014 Lux Prize at 27 Times Cinema, the initiative organized by Giornate degli Autori, the...

Paramount-owned British network Channel 5, Australia’s Network 10 and Fremantle are looking to a post-Neighbours future and working on a primetime thriller from Neighbours exec Jason Herbison, starring Stay Close actor Jo Joyner.
Filming will get underway shortly in Australia on four-parter Riptide, which will follow Alison (Joyner), whose life is plunged into despair when her new Australian husband vanishes after a morning surf. It quickly becomes obvious there is more to the story than meets the eye as she sets out to investigate his disappearance.
Joyner will play the lead and Herbison created the show. He was an exec on Channel 5/Network 10 miniseries Lie With Me and Neighbours, the soap produced by Fremantle for Channel 5 and Network 10’s (and streamer 10 Peach) that is about to end after three-and-a-half decades, as the UK network pushes further into original drama such as Riptide.
Joining Joyner is Ciarán Griffiths and Australian actors David Berry, Peter O’Brien, Ally Fowler (Wentworth), Pia Miranda, rising stars Benny Turland, Asher Yasbincek and Yazeed Dahar, and newcomers Benjamin Samaddar and Sonya Suares.
“Lie With Me proved incredibly popular with our viewers and I’m looking forward to expanding our drama slate even further, working hand in hand with our production partners Fremantle Australia and Network 10,” said Greg Barnett, Commissioning Editor, Factual Entertainment, Unscripted, Channel 5 & Paramount+.

A talented cast rises above some uneven material in this week's Atlantis, which tells the story of Pandora's Box...
This review contains spoilers.
1.9 Pandora's Box
Remember when Medusa didn’t want to speak to Hercules because of the whole love potion incident, and was only just beginning to warm to him after these events? Well, it appears Atlantis' writers don’t.
As ever, let's start with a recap of the action: tonight’s episode began with Hercules snatching Medusa away to his bed, before he was bashed about the head and kidnapped. A task was issued by an old associate and off he went to recover Pandora’s Box from Hades.
With Medusa in the hands of Kyros, Hercules had no choice but to take up the errand, taking his young associates, Jason and Pythagoras, with him.

Sometimes, it's good to show a little faith - and we're not talking about prayers to the Greek gods. Just as this week's Atlantis sees our heroes forced to vault slathering beasties, so the show itself also takes a big leap.
Jason (Jack Donnelly) lands himself in trouble when he leaps to the aid of an old peasant being beaten by Heptarian - a sneery noble of royal blood. Dragged before Alexander Siddig's ruthless King Minos, our hero - plus his erstwhile chums Hercules and Pythagoras - are sentenced to serve as bull leapers and must dodge the deadly beasts in the city arena, for the entertainment for the baying masses...
Warriors facing death, arena politics and the ever-present threat of violence - 'A Boy of No Consequence' sees Atlantis transformed into a PG-rated Spartacus, right down to Sarah Parish filling the Lucy Lawless role of saucy schemer.

Review Dave Adamson 12 Oct 2013 - 21:10
Death and intrigue underpin this week's Atlantis, which is a massive step above the first two episodes...
This review contains spoilers.
1.3 The Boy Must Die
This week, Hercules, Jason and Pythagoras have offended Poseidon’s favourite servant and they must face their fate which, if the last two weeks are anything go by, will include a turgid script and inconsequential scenes building to a limp climax.
Their fate actually involves learning to bull fight - or, just leap over bulls in a way that would make Spelbound cringe - and surviving the attack of the bull. Only if the rag-tag group of our three heroes and a bunch of slaves survive will they be set free. The odds are against them as this group of thrown-together misfits can’t get on for reasons that are never really explained.
A moment of heroics from Jason...

With news that British TV show Shameless is finally going to get a U.S. remake, AfterElton.com thought it time to introduce the hit British program to American audiences who don’t already follow the show on the Sundance Channel. So they asked me, one half of the popular AfterElton.com vlog Gay in the UK, to take you through the gay ups and downs of Chatsworth estate’s finest.
It’s impossible to know what the American version of Shameless that Showtime is producing will be like or how closely it will hew to the original, but the following rundown of what happened to the gay and gay-adjacent characters on the UK version will at least give American audiences a taste of what they might expect from this groundbreaking program.
Depending on which episode you catch, Shameless might be a hilarious comedy or a serious drama, but whatever the case,...

Dead Cert is the latest movie from Raw Productions, the company behind the upcoming film industry mockumentary Just for the Record starring Rik Mayall, Danny Dyer, Craig Fairbrass and Sean Pertwee due for release in May. Dead Cert is gangster/vampire action horror, with Craig Fairbrass, Jason Flemyng, Dexter Fletcher and Steven Berkoff. The official synopsis reads:
Freddy Frankham thought he’d left the world of organised crime behind. But on the eve of the opening of his new venture, an upmarket gentlemen’s club called Paradise, Freddy finds himself drawn back into a life he’d rather leave in the past.
With an all-star cast that includes Craig Fairbrass, Billy Murray, Dexter Fletcher, Jason Flemyng, Andrew Tiernan, Janet Montgomery, Roland Manookian, Ciaran Griffiths, Lisa McAllister and Steven Berkoff, Dead Cert is a gangster film with a difference, and a roaring, rampaging antidote to the limp, romanticised vampires of modern horror films.

Welcome to another edition of Gays of Our Lives. This week in Gool Theater, we’ve got some very good clips from As the World Turns. And yet, the show still managed to annoy me. Am I just picky? Watch for yourself and see. Plus, Good Times, Bad Times (Dutch) starts an intriguing plot arc, Roman risks his life on All That Matters and One Life to Live continues to astound and amaze. Thankfully, it’s in a good way.
Gool Scoops And Spoilers has the dish on the new gay storyline on Emmerdale, Kyle and Oliver each make a commitment to Nick on One Life to Live, but can they keep their promises? Plus, Ravi comes to the defense of his sisters on Hollyoaks, Ian is trapped in a dicey situation on Shameless (U.S.), the kids from Glee make it to Sectionals in the final episode until – gasp!

In The Spotlight – Degrassi: The Next Generation, Clara Sheller, and River City
This week we look at three very different series that hail from three different countries. But all have one thing in common: each tell interesting and intriguing stories about the lives and loves of gay men.
First up, Degrassi: The Next Generation and ‘The Life of Riley’.
Riley Stavros, played by Argiris Karras, is the long running Canadian teen drama’s latest entry in its much-lauded history of depicting the lives of gay characters. But two recent episodes clearly showed Riley is very different from Degrassi’s last gay character, Marco (out actor Adamo Ruggiero). Where Marco was openly gay and never struggled with his sexual identity, it’s been nothing but a constant battle for Riley. In fact, he hates being gay and desperately wishes things were different. But as we see in this first clip, he...

In The Spotlight – River City
When we last took a peek at BBC Scotland drama River City, gay graphic designer Scott Wallace had lost the child he cared about — not to mention the guy he cared about. Since that storyline wrapped up, Scott has pretty much disappeared; however, a few weeks ago, the show introduced an intriguing new gay character in the very nice form of construction worker Nathan Simpson, played by James Daffern.
When Nathan set up shop in River City, he immediately found himself attracted to bartender Rory Murdoch, played by out actor David Paisley. While Rory was flattered by Nathan’s attentions, Rory is straight … or so he says.

Degrassi: The Next Generation has a long history of prominent gay characters and this season is no exception. Earlier this year we met Riley Stavros, a teenager struggling with his sexuality, unable to accept that he is gay. With an episode featuring Riley set to air this week on The N, we decided to chat via e-mail with Argiris Karras, who plays the troubled young man, to get his thoughts on his role.
Argiris Karras
AfterElton.com: Tell us something about yourself. How old are you? Where are you from? What do you do for fun? What kind of music do you listen to?
Argiris Karras: I'm 19 years old and I was born in Toronto, Ontario, one of the greatest cities around!
For fun I often chill with my friends and do a whole bunch of random things such as play soccer and video games, watch movies and listen to music.

In The Spotlight — Emmerdale
This week we bid a fond farewell to Emmerdale’s Paul Lambert (out actor Matthew Bose) and Jonny Foster (Richard Grieve), by taking a look back at their relationship as they exit the series for a new life in Australia – oh, yeah, and to give their troubled marriage a second (or is it third?) chance. It’s been a long hard road for this couple that found their love tested time and again.

Getting To Know … Shameless
The love life of gay teenager Ian Gallagher (Gerard Kearns) on the U.K. series Shameless has never been easy. Whether it’s having to steal a bed just so he can have sex with his hot new boyfriend (somehow landing in prison because of it), trying to keep his ongoing affair with a married man a secret, or that fling with a homophobic drug dealer who has a strange sexual quirk (big surprise), something always comes along to make finding love (or just getting laid) a trying ordeal for poor Ian.
