ABC’s legendary sudser “General Hospital” is looking to defend its crown at the Daytime Emmys, landing 19 nominations this year — the most of any program — as the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced contenders for the landmark 50th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
Last year, “General Hospital” was the big winner with five awards — including best daytime drama — as the telecast returned to a live, in-person event. This time out, NATAS first revealed multiple categories Tuesday night via various entertainment shows, and it looked like CBS’ “The Young and the Restless” — also in the middle of its 50th anniversary celebration — had taken an early lead.

Netflix released a trailer for “The Circle” Season 3, which premieres Sept. 8.
The four-week reality competition series will begin with eight new players as they compete to become a top social media influencer and win $100,000. Over the course of the season, as original players are eliminated from the titular circle, a few new ones will enter. Some, such as Calvin, who you meet in the trailer, are playing as themselves, but others are catfish.
The trailer, which you can watch below, also previews a couple of the big twists of this season. First, Ava secretly brings her sister, Chanel, into the game with her — with the two playing as one. Additionally, players begin to become wary of Michelle, a competitor who has two accounts; her peers do not know which one is her and which one is a catfish posing as her.

Apple TV Plus released a trailer for and some new images from its upcoming adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation.”
Asimov’s stories were first published in the 1940s as short stories and later (in the 1950s) turned into a trilogy. But in 1981 he returned to the world, adding both sequels and prequels. Now, the saga gets a new life as dramatic television, the first season of which premieres on Sept. 24 with its first two (of 10) episodes and then drops a new episode weekly on Fridays up to and including Nov. 19.
The story follows a band of exiles who learn that the only way to save the Galactic Empire from destruction is to defy it. How they know this is because Dr. Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) predicts the fall of the Empire and he and his followers establish the titular Foundation to attempt to provide civilization a future.

CBS is returning to “Love Island” for a third season, this time in Hawaii. Casting is underway for a new edition, CBS Entertainment senior executive vice president of programming Thom Sherman confirmed on Wednesday.
Sherman made the announcement during the Eye network’s virtual Television Critics Association press tour.
“Love Island” has been a slow burn for CBS, debuting to tepid ratings in 2019 — but Eye execs saw potential in the series, which has been a wildly popular phenomenon in the U.K., were the format was born. The show was renewed for a second season, but had to adjust to a Las Vegas locale in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Love Island” has indeed continued to see a ratings uptick for CBS, and by the end of Season 2 was attracting an audience of 2 million viewers.

The second season of “Love Island USA” is hitting the U.K. this fall.
The CBS series, which has this year relocated from Fiji to Las Vegas due to Covid-19, will debut on ITV2 from Sept. 7. Singles will occupy a “bubble” in a villa atop Caesars Entertainment’s boutique hotel The Cromwell.
Season 1 of the U.S. edition aired last year in late-night slots on ITV’s secondary family channel ITVBe. As such, the 9pm slot handed to the show’s second season on ITV2 marks a significant step up, although the impact of Covid-19 on the broadcaster’s schedule is likely to have played a part.
International versions of ITV Studios’ hit format have been a saving grace for the U.K. broadcaster, which was forced to pull the plug on the popular U.K. summer and winter editions of “Love Island” due to Covid-19 concerns around international production.

“Love Island” will premiere its second season later this month.
It will debut on Aug. 24 with a two-hour premiere, with episodes continuing to air nightly from 9-10 p.m. and a two-hour broadcast on Saturdays. The cast will be announced closer to premiere. Arielle Vandenberg and narrator Matthew Hoffman will return.
As TheWrap previously reported, the second season will take place inside a bubble environment at Las Vegas’s Cromwell Hotel, which has been closed during the pandemic. “Love Island” was initially planned to return in May with it taking place on an overseas island. Those plans, of course, were upended by the pandemic.

Big Brother and Love Island were two of the big-ticket reality shows that have been put into a holding pattern as a result of the Covid-19 production shutdown.
However, CBS is confident that both non-scripted formats will air this summer, albeit slight later than originally planned.
“With Love Island and Big Brother, we still hope to have on the air this summer, it could be a little later than usual but we’re still optimistic about getting those on,” CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl told Deadline. “Those shows turn around pretty quickly, Big Brother has live shows every week and Love Island literally airs the night after it shoots, those shows do not have long post processes.”
Big Brother generally starts airing at the end of June. The show, which is hosted by Julie Chen, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, having launched on July 5, 2000, making it the second...

CBS’ version of hit British format Love Island is the latest non-scripted series to be pushed back due to the Covid-19 production shutdown.
Deadline understands that CBS is still planning to move forward with the second season of the dating format but is pushing it from its original May 21 premiere.
This comes after UK broadcaster ITV revealed earlier today that it had pulled the plug on the summer season of the British version.
The first season of the show, which is hosted by Arielle Vandenberg, was filmed in a villa in Fiji. CBS and producer ITV Entertainment are also understood to be exploring other locations, including domestic options, as and when filming will be able to be back up and running.

CBS has handed dating reality series Love Island a second season.
The broadcaster is showing faith in the remake of the British entertainment format, which is hosted by Arielle Vandenberg.
The show, which has aired five nights a week in an 8pm slot since July 9, ends its opening run on August 7. Contestants will return to the Love Island villa, situated in Fiji, for another run next summer.
The announcement was made during the TCA summer press tour by CBS Entertainment President Kelly Kahl and Thom Sherman, Senior Executive Vice President, Programming, CBS Entertainment
While the show hasn’t quite exploded in the overnight ratings, it has performed well for a young audience, bringing the network’s average down considerably during its timeslot. The show has expanded CBS’ summer audience, been well received by young female audiences and has performed well digitally, becoming the network’s most-streamed new show on CBS All Access and CBS.

CBS is returning to “Love Island” for a second chance at a summer romance.
The network has renewed the reality series for a second season, despite it posting less than stellar ratings to date. CBS took a big swing on the series’ first season, which still has four episodes to air, programming it five nights a week.
“Love Island,” based on the wildly popular U.K. format, maroons a group of singles on an island and asks them to couple-up or get dumped from the tropical villa. The Islanders face challenges and the arrival of new Islanders almost every episode as friendships and relationships form. In addition to choosing their partners, Islanders must also win the hearts of viewers who have the opportunity to shape events on screen and ultimately crown one lucky couple the winner, who will then have the chance to walk away with both love and the cash prize.

Exclusive: The UK reality phenom Love Island is getting an American version. CBS has nabbed the U.S. format rights to the smash hit British dating competition series, from ITV Studios and Motion Content Group. CBS has given a series order to the adaptation, to be produced by ITV Entertainment.
Love Island features a group of young single “Islanders” on a lookout for romance who are brought together in a stunning villa in a beautiful tropical location. The network has not set a premiere date yet but the series seems like a suitable companion for CBS’ venerable Big Brother to air alongside its regular or celebrity installment next summer or spring.
