Welcome to the wonderful world of Henry Sugar.
On Thursday, Netflix released the first trailer for Wes Anderson’s latest project, the short film “The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar,” based on the short story by Roald Dahl. The project is one of four Dahl shorts Anderson made for Netflix, all of which will arrive on the platform at the end of September.
Adapted and directed by Anderson, the new short film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, and Richard Ayoade.
“I had the thought to try to adapt Henry Sugar maybe almost 20 years ago when I was staying at Gipsy House (which is Dahl’s family house in Buckinghamshire), and I had a simultaneous thought which was: ‘I don’t know how to do this,’” Anderson said in press notes provided by Netflix. “But over the years, the Dahl family — Felicity Dahl and Dahl’s grandson...

Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a beloved children's book and has been turned into a movie not once, but twice—starring Gene Wilder as the main chocolatier Willy Wonka in the first movie and Johnny Depp in the second. But it looks like the late author envisioned the main protagonist Charlie a little differently than the character that appeared in the pages of his book and on the big screen. In a recent interview with BBC Radio 4's Today program, Liccy Dahl, Roald's wife, revealed that her husband originally depicted Charlie as "a little black boy." "His first Charlie that he wrote about was a little black boy," she told the BBC. According to the BBC,...

From James Bond to Willy Wonka, Matilda to The Witches, we chart the big screen work of Roald Dahl...
Roald Dahl has often been referred to as one of the greatest storytellers for children in the 20th century. His books have delighted children for generations, with their dark and inventive sense of humour and their eccentric, dastardly adult characters.
Likewise, his written work for adults has just as much wit and creativity, and over the years, he also worked as a screenwriter on a number of projects, including TV work on Alfred Hitchcock Presents and his own anthology series, Roald Dahl's Tales Of The Unexpected.
Given how it doesn't even take the likes of J.K. Rowling and Stephanie Meyer five years to have their popular works adapted by Hollywood, there has inevitably been an extensive crossover between Dahl's written work and the big screen. His work...

Opera has always been a reflection of the cultural zeitgeist of Western society. Historical events, popular stories, real people—they’ve all inspired musicalizations which allow patrons to connect directly with cultural moments in artistic ways.
But while opera may have stopped being the most popular art form, it never stopped being a relevant one. Hats off to the contemporary composers who continue to devote themselves to breathing life into the art form (because if they don’t, who will?). Opera is an endangered species, much like pandas or stenographers, and it continues to thrive creatively by reflecting the pop culture moments—movies,...

Fantastic Mr. Fox is what you would expect from a Wes Anderson film set to the hip beat of stop-motion animation that's based on a book by Roald Dahl. Dark humor fused with hipster shenanigans and a playful dialogue, Fantastic Mr. Fox is not just one of the best animated features of 2009, which -- that's an easy assessment -- it's also one of the most irresistible movies to arrive in theaters, and now your Blu-ray player, in some time.
If Up and Fantastic Mr. Fox are not reason enough for the Academy to open up their Best Picture category, then a good reason will never come.
Mr. Fox (voiced by George Clooney), is, by design, a chicken thief. Yet he, like most men, animal or not, domesticates himself when he enters family life and makes a decent living penning a column for the "rag" paper. Married to his lovely wife Mrs.

Golden Globe noms announced
Complete list of film and TV nominees
"I'm pumped!" James Cameron said before hopping a plane from New York to Los Angeles, where he hoped to celebrate with the cast and crew of best drama nominee "Avatar" at a screening Tuesday night. "It's been a 4 1/2-year journey, and this is not typically the kind of film that critics love, it being a genre movie and being seen as a big commercial movie." Cameron, also nominated for a best director Golden Globe, was pleased the movie also got some love in the music category. "I think this is James Horner's best score to date," he says. But he says he is sad his actors got short shrift. "Maybe there's a sense that acting for performance capture isn't the same as acting for a lens, which is going to take an education. I think that will eventually go away.

David Kelly has nabbed the role of Grandpa Joe in Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Warner Bros. Pictures. The project is based on the celebrated Roald Dahl book, in which a young boy named Charlie and his grandfather tour a candy factory owned by the eccentric Willy Wonka. The book was made into a film in 1971, with the screenplay by Dahl, but titled Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. According to Warners, Burton's take, with a screenplay by John August, will skew more closely toward the book than the 1971 version. Kelly, who starred in Waking Ned Devine, joins Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie. Kevin McCormick is overseeing for the studio. Producing are Brad Grey and Richard D. Zanuck, while Liccy Dahl, Michael Siegal and McCormick are executive producers. Kelly's other recent credits include Laws of Attraction and Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London.
