Destin Daniel Cretton, the filmmaker who co-wrote and directed the Marvel Studios movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and who executive produced American Born Chinese for Disney+, has launched Hisako, a new multimedia production company.
Cretton will run the banner with Jeyun Munford, formerly an executive at Universal and Lionsgate, who will act as the company’s president, running both film and television arms.
With a focus on empowering filmmakers and creatives, one of Hisako’s mission statements is a commitment to transforming the film and television landscape by highlighting marginalized stories and pushing them into the mainstream. The company is founded on the underlying conviction that storytelling has the power to unite audiences worldwide through shared emotions and experiences.
One of the first projects out of the gate for Hisako will be the big-screen live-action take on Naruto, one of the most popular mangas of all time.

The official trailer for Roku’s The Spiderwick Chronicles shows off much more of the series’ fantasy world and of Christian Slater as an ogre who would prefer a world without humans. The two-minute trailer also introduces the Grace family and how moving into the Spiderwick Estate opens up their eyes to the existence of mythical creatures.
In addition to Christian Slater as Mulgarath, season one stars Joy Bryant as Helen Grace, Noah Cottrell as Simon Grace, Lyon Daniels as Jared Grace, and Mychala Lee as Mallory Grace. Jack Dylan Grazer provides the voice of Thimbletack.
“The Grace family moves from Brooklyn, New York, to their ancestral home in Henson, Michigan, the Spiderwick Estate. Helen makes the move with her 15-year-old fraternal twin boys, Jared and Simon, and her older daughter, Mallory,” reads Roku’s synopsis. “Shortly after moving to the Spiderwick Estate Jared discovers a boggart and realizes that magical creatures are real!

When Marvel Television, the team that made shows like "Daredevil," "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.", and "Inhumans," was disbanded in 2019 and the film executives from Marvel Studios firmly took the reins of the company's promising slate of TV shows about to hit Disney+, the reaction from comic book fans was a sigh of relief. Finally, all Marvel projects would be directly overseen by Kevin Feige and his team, which, given their track record in movies up to that point, should ensure a level of consistent quality across the board.
That was the dream. But that dream died surprisingly quickly.
"WandaVision" started strong and sputtered in its climax. "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" touched on a few interesting ideas, but got too bogged down with things like the "Power Broker." There were a few bright spots in the shows that followed. "Loki" season 1 and "Ms. Marvel" are the best seasons of TV...

"Daredevil: Born Again" is in big trouble. The highly anticipated Marvel Studios show, which promises to bring back The Devil of Hell's Kitchen (and supposedly also Punisher), is undergoing a huge revamp. According to The Hollywood Reporter, less than half of the show's 18 episodes had been shot by the time "Born Again" paused production during the writers' strike, but the footage available made Kevin Feige and other Marvel executives reconsider the entire project.
And so, late last month, Marvel quietly fired head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman and let go of the directors for the remaining episodes while they head back to square one. Marvel is now looking for new writers and directors. According to THR, Ord and Corman's take was more of "a legal procedural that did not resemble the Netflix version, known for its action and violence." It didn’t take long to see the problem after Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again paused production in mid-June during the writers strike. Fewer than half of the series’ 18 episodes had been shot, but it was enough for Marvel executives, including chief Kevin Feige, to review the footage and come away with a clear-eyed assessment: The show wasn’t working.
So, in late September, Marvel quietly let go of head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman and also released the directors for the remainder of the season as part of a significant creative reboot of the series, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The studio is now on the hunt for new writers and directors for the project, which stars Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer turned superhero.

One streaming service's trash is another's treasure. To that end, Roku has announced that it has nabbed the rights to "The Spiderwick Chronicles" TV series, which had previously been in the works at Disney+. And when we say in the works, we mean that the entire eight-episode series had already been filmed. Yet, Disney decided not to release it anyhow, as we learned back in August. But the show will see the light of day after all.
The adaptation of the acclaimed book series by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black will now be a Roku Original series that will debut on The Roku Channel in early 2024. No specific release date has been announced yet but expect more information, including a trailer, sooner rather than later. It's easy to see why Disney would have pursued this in the first place as the YA fantasy adventure novels are quite popular, with 20 million copies sold.

Upon arrival, the family not only uncovers mysteries hidden inside their great grandfather’s Spiderwick Estate, but also discovers a secret, fantastical world around them.”

The eight-episode first season was produced by Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television to initially stream on Disney+, but the streamer decided not to move forward with its plans after the first season was completed. And their loss is Roku’s gain.

2008 saw the debut of a movie that continues to have major repercussions for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
No, not Iron Man. We’re talking about the second MCU movie, which hit theaters a month after Iron Man. For years, it seemed like Marvel wanted to ignore The Incredible Hulk, only referencing the movie’s events in the equally tangental Netflix MCU shows. But then William Hurt reprised his role as General Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America: Civil War. And then Tim Roth came back as Abomination for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. And now Tim Blake Nelson and Liv Tyler are back as Samuel Sterns aka The Leader and Betty Ross for Captain America: Brave New World.
But there remains one notable omission in this incredible reunion. The Hulk himself, Edward Norton as Bruce Banner. For the movie’s first viewers,...

CBS has ordered three new series from this year’s crop of pilots.
The network has handed series orders to Matlock, starring Kathy Bates; The Good Wife spinoff Elsbeth; and the Wayans family comedy, which now is known as Poppa’s House.

The trio will air during the 2023-24 season and will be joined by Tracker, starring Justin Hartley, which formerly was known as The Never Game and was ordered to series in December.
CBS isn’t specifying episode orders, particularly given the current writers strike, but given that all three come from its own studio, the network can be flexible.
It comes after CBS made some space for new titles after axing East New York and True Lies on Tuesday, though it reversed its decision to cancel S.W.A.T., instead bringing the drama back for a seventh and final season.

In a move toward more planet-friendly movies, Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (Ufeg) has announced today that it is launching a new initiative called the GreenerLight Program (a play on the term given for when movies are given a go at a studio).
The new plan is designed to embed sustainable practices and eco-conscious forethought across the entirety of the filmmaking process, starting from script development and on to production (including location decisions) and distribution. The studio also said the program will encompass looking at depictions of on-screen behaviors from an environmentally friendly angle. (Similar moves have been made by such directors as Kat Coiro, who has worked in partnership with the nonprofit Habits of Waste to show characters using reusable containers instead of single-use plastics onscreen.)
Going forward, every film that is greenlit at the studio will include a sustainability plan, which Universal claims is unique among studios.

USC Annenberg and San Diego State University have both released end-of-year diversity reports looking at behind the scenes representation of 2022’s biggest movies. And the results found that Hollywood severely backslid over the past year.
Both studies — USC Annenberg Inclusion Initative’s “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair” report and the San Diego State Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film’s “Celluloid Ceiling” report — looked at the number of women who directed the top 100 films of the year. This year, just 10 women — Olivia Newman (“Where the Crawdads Sing”), Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Woman King”), Olivia Wilde (“Don’t Worry Darling”), Jessica M. Thompson (“The Invitation”), Kat Coiro (“Marry Me”), Rosalind Ross (“Father Stu”), Halina Reijn (“Bodies Bodies Bodies”), Kasi Lemmons (“Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody”), Chinonye Chukwu (“Till”) and Maria Schrader (“She Said”) — helmed one of the top 100 highest grossing film’s at the domestic box office this year,...

As 2023 dawns, two major academic organizations that measure the progress of inclusion in Hollywood are looking back at the track record for 2022 in film.
The USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative’s latest “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair” report analyzes the gender and race/ethnicity of the directors behind last year’s 100 highest-grossing movies in the U.S., while the San Diego State Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film’s most recent “Celluloid Ceiling” report examined the employment of women in key behind-the-scenes roles in both the 100 and 250 top-grossing movies at the domestic box office.
In the one category shared by both studies — percentage of women directors among top 100 films – the schools came up with slightly different counts (possibly because of the criteria each group uses to compile its Box Office Mojo sampling). Sdsu reported that 11 percent of 2022’s helmers...

Kat Coiro, the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law director-producer and director of Universal’s Marry Me, wants to see Hollywood stop showing single-use plastics onscreen. No more plastic water bottles. No more Solo cups. No more plastic baggies.
To de-normalize the depiction of disposable plastic in film and TV and encourage viewers to use reusable containers — all in the name of helping end the plastic pollution crisis — Coiro showed Owen Wilson packing his daughter’s lunch in Marry Me in a steel lunch box, while Jennifer Lopez drank from a blinged-out S’well bottle in the romantic comedy. And on the Marvel/Disney+ series She-Hulk, the show’s characters, including the Hulk, played by actor and environmental activist Mark Ruffalo, drink from Hydro Flasks, not throw-away plastic water bottles.
On Oct. 26, Coiro said she’s planning to go even further with her next project,...
