Trash

Consumer grade camcorder + drama textbooks + people off the street in pantomime costumes. You can even hear the wind! This is so amateurish it's ludicrous. It's hilarious.

Love Letter
16 August 2019
People will say Once Upon a Time... is Quentin Tarantino's love letter to Hollywood, but it's really more of a love letter to himself.

Tarantino's passions are all laid out here in full Technicolor: Hollywood glamour and its stars, nostalgia for 50s TV serials, ludicrous ultraviolence, and an unbridled enthusiasm for (dirty) foot fetishism. He is one of the most recognisable film nerds in the history of cinema, and this realisation of everything he loves about the industry up on the silver screen is his wet dream.

And it's good. It's no secret that Tarantino is a very talented filmmaker; his talent for creating longform, engaging films is perhaps no more evident than it is here - the two and a half hour runtime flies by. This is attributable to his skills in blending thematic elements of comedy, tension, horror, and others on a whim throughout his screenplay. The imagery and mise-en-scene is also quite brilliant; not since Boogie Nights has 60's Hollywood looked this lush.

Quentin didn't go to film school, he went to films, and here his passion for them is as tangible as ever.

The Chambermaid is one of the weakest films of the 21st Century so far.

It is quite literally 103 minutes of a service worker going about her daily tasks. It's made with a conventional cinematic structure, but there is no character development. There is no plot advancement. So why make the film in such a straightforward narrative style?

If the idea was to demonstrate the mundanity of a service worker's life, then congratulations; but everyone is already aware of this. We did not need this 'message' (there isn't one) conveyed by way of a feature film; it's offensive to the viewer to waste their precious time and offer nothing in return.

It could reasonably be expected that themes of women's rights or social injustice might be present in the film, but no. They are only there if the viewer decides to implement them. There are some very subtle scenes which appear to touch upon these issues, but it's almost as if the filmmaker was afraid to tackle them.

This film is nothing.

This is what passes for a WWE PPV these days?
29 December 2018
Just boring. It seems that in its efforts to modernise the product, WWE has stripped away everything that made it entertaining in the first place; namely the grit and controversy that made it exciting to watch in the past. The characters now are just dull, and the storylines are generic championship glory rivalries. This version is so toned down and lifeless, the chairs used in the matches might as well be made of foam.

Dull
5 January 2014
American Hustle is one of the most boring films I've seen recently.

The film more than feels its length due to poor pacing, an uninteresting plot and underdeveloped characters. It seems as if all of the time spent on developing this feature went on the mise-en-scene and costumes, most notably the exploitative costumes worn by Amy Adams.

Very disappointing performances were displayed all around. Rarely do I feel like I'm wasting my time watching a film, but I wanted to leave the cinema about an hour into this, but it kept dragging on.

There's nothing more to say, I just have to keep writing for my review to be accepted...

This film was so, so boring...
