We Are the Wave (2019– )

Wir sind enttäuscht

I've never read the source material but now that I've seen this I just want to check out the book by Todd Strasser. So that's the only thing that the show was good for I suppose. The characters are bland stereotypes with no personality whatsoever besides "teen rebellion motivates my actions". The most annoying out of the bunch was Zazie, how come she went such a drastic change overnight? I wouldn't mind it if she changed her hair first and her style later, the change made the character so unbelieveable. What makes her so annoying is her hypocrisy (see the slaughterhouse incident). The story has no flair and the turns are quite predictable. Too much tell too little show with that I mean there's overexplanation when there's none needed (ex. scene where the detective gets a phonecall from her wife to "sign the papers", we as audience know immediately this is about divorce papers but then she tells "I want this divorce to get over it", which was unnecessary) . TL;DR Boring show with incomprehensible characters and a snorefest for story, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone except if you want a show where you can look on your phone and not miss a thing.

Pastel Nightmare

Don't go in expecting you're gonna get a movie with fleshed out characters or a coherent story. The thing you're gonna get is just a bunch of music videos mashed together. The way the story is written is how kids from elementary school play make-believe with their friends. (only the friends have magical powers, everyone wants to get a bit of that spotlight, being a bit grotesque sometimes for the fun,...). It seems as if Martinez had a lot of fun with this project and I don't blame her, if I had the chance I would do the same. My main problem with the movie is that it tackles way too many themes (bullying, transphobia, body image,...) and it ends up being a "we live in a society"-mess wherein only the obvious get stated without saying much in depth about it. I do praise the movie for the costume design and set design, the colors in this movie had me in awe and that's what you kind of expect if you've seen Martinez previous music videos for her Crybaby album for example. I would recommend this movie to people who are a big fan of Melanie Martinez and for the people who watch movies solely for the aesthetic.

I'd rather replay a David Cage game than see anything that David Slade directed

To all the people who preach this for being completely new and something they have never seen before, I'm sorry that you didn't experience great media that much because this is almost commonplace.

It's no wonder that Black Mirror wanted to jump in immediateley on the interactive film format that Netflix recently provided considering the show is mainly about the interaction and relationship between humankind and technology. But Bandersnatch is just incredibly bland and predictable for what it's supposed to be and doesn't even surprise me because the director David Slade was also responsible for the worst episode in the series: Metalhead.

My main problem with the film is that they overexplain everything, it doesn't reach the levels of subtlety in presenting the morals like previous Black Mirror episodes did, for example the brilliant debut "National Anthem"

The main characters was a boring lump of meat, I know what they were going for but it just didn't work out. I felt no remorse or sympathy towards Stefan, if it weren't for the audience's control he would remain a goody two-shoes. There's nothing wrong with protagonists who are good by nature but this is Black Mirror and I expect my characters to be complicated and be unpredictable. As for the rest of the characters they were also quite uninteresting , except for Colin but that's because I like his style and the general vibe he's giving off.

Bandersnatch follows the exact same plot of "Whirlpool", the 68th episode of 90'ies horror anthology show "Tales from the Crypt" and that series did a better job at executing such a story.

TLDR: Bandersnatch is a boring mixture of "Groundhog Day" and the "Matrix". It overexplained everything which beats the purpose of the original show. I'd recommend watching "Black Mirror: White Bear" or "Tales from the Crypt: Whirlpool".
