Ek Mutthi Aasmaan (1973)
Good movie
I decided to watch this movie after the movies title song popped up on my YouTube stream. Based on the star cast I had little to no expectations from this movie.
Pros: A surprisingly good story, and a wonderful title song that is rendered beautifully by Kishore Kumar and plays through the movie and has its various 'mood' versions. Majority of the cast has played their roles well and Vijay Arora (Sudarshan) does a good job of playing the glue holding all the other characters together. Ably supporting him are I. S. Johar and Kamini Kaushal, who plays a rather bold character. I don't think I had seen her smoking nonchalantly in any other movie. Pran has a small supporting role will probably be remembered for being in the title song. Mehmood has a brief cameo, Kamal Kapoor plays a typical baddie, and Lalita Pawar's character has nothing much to offer. Aruna Irani is okay in her role.
Cons: The leading lady, Radha Saluja and Yogeeta Bali's character offer nothing to the film. Similarly, the character of Gulshan Arora has no screen presence and acting is surely not his forte. Direction at times is sloppy. Also, why put a wig on Vijay Arora ?
Overall: A decent movie which had the potential to be so much better. Worth a watch.
Thugs of Hindostan (2018)
Don't understand the hate.
I really don't get the hate. This is an out and out Masala entertainer and that is what it should be watched as. I don't know why people are crapping on it; probably they were expecting Amadeus or Schindler's List or Master and Commander considering it had Amitabh Bachchan and Amir Khan. Yes, Amir Khan's character has shades of Jack Sparrow, but they are completely different characters. Hats off to Mr. Bachchan for physically going thru the stunts he did at his age, phenomenal effort from him. Building two ships and actually having solid fights choreographed needs to be appreciated. The canvas for this movie is big. Overall I think this movie, even though the plot is predictable, is a fun watch if it is watched for what it is supposed to be - a masala entertainer.
2.0 (2018)
Worthy of watching ONLY in Real 3D to do justice to the movie
Just saw 2.0 in Real 3D at a Regal RPX screen (couldn't get tickets to IMAX 3D). Visually spectacular and the 3D really works well for almost 90-95% of the movie. There are certain portions where the 3D/VFX looks a tad far fetched, but in the bigger scheme of things it can be forgiven. As far as the story goes, the central theme is true to what is happening around us, even though it is done on a grand scale. Hopefully, the presence of Rajnikant and Akshay Kumar conveying this message changes the ways of a few people. Change is difficult, but it is good if there is some change than no change. As far as performances are concerned, this is a Rajnikant and Akshay Kumar show thru and thru. Dare I say Akshay Kumar outshone Rajnikant, maybe because his character had more depth and a chance to emote which he does successfully. There is more juice injected in Rajnikants performance with the arrival of 2.0.
Finally, this is definitely worth a watch and to properly enjoy this movie you must absolutely watch it in 3D. Cheers!
