In the Name of the Father (1993)
Travel back to Sheridan's Magnum Opus
The 1st time I watched the film, I was 13 years old. Now that I'm 44 years old, last night during a screening, part of an Ireland Festival based in Mexico City -offered by Ireland's Embassy-, my approach to the story has changed: but the respect for Sheridan's Magnum Opus, has nothing but expanded. Example: as a kid that loves U2's music, you are impressed easily by Bono/Friday's song, so with the pre-credit scene plus credits you are already in Sheridan's pocket. As a 44 year old, I believe the film is about so much more, such as a bloody War where revenge does not come in measured, reasonable doses: as administered from both sides. Of course, when has war been fair? And it is also about disguised gentrification: just as the one Mexico lives nowadays, when the country is quietly being taken over with counterterrorist tactics, with a little help of Mexican 1 percenters, as a prequel to the upcoming Fifa World Cup in '26.
As I was leaving the Cinema last night, someone told me: "you should not like the film, as you are not a leftist". Ha! Just because Conlon's cell has a Che Guevara poster on the wall (later on it is shown Conlon also has a Jimmy Hendrix poster), Conlon is a leftist and this film a story of Left vs. Right? I don't think so. It is a story of revenge, and Unforgiveness in Catholics: specially Joe McAndrew, the real Villain of the film, that after all the killing he has done, he still has time to have a grudge with dire consequences, on a Prison Cop.
And last but not least, Go raibh maith agat to the Ireland Embassy, for programming IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER for those who wish to understand what is going on, all around the world. The Rich eliminating the Poor, as always. Socialism is a burgeois' idea to convince the Poor it is cool to be part of the proletariat. It speaks volumes Marx often relying on financial support from friends and supporters to make ends meet.
