Stranger Things: Chapter Eight: The Mind Flayer (2017)
Worst episode of the series
I thought this episode was the worst of the series honestly. The dialogue felt so awkward and inauthentic throughout. I'm so damn confused as to why every one is praising this episode so highly. We never saw Max's brother look for her, so why was it set up in the beginning? I'm not sure if they explore it further in the last episode, but it was interesting to see his character develop a bit there. I was disappointed they didn't go any further with that in the episode. Bob's death was sad, don't get me wrong, but I audibly groaned when he LEFT HIS GUN BEHIND. Hard to feel sympathy when characters act stupid. Did they really need to stick that uninspired trope in there? Then the whole scene with Will tied up and his mom and brother and Mike telling sappy stories to try and jog his memory and get through to him - all the contrived tears - so melodramatic! I don't understand the Will talking in morse code thing either, seemed just like an attempt to throw some extra unnecessary prolonged drama in. This episode bored me, which is very out of the ordinary considering every other episode prior had me fully attentive the entire time. It was clunky - just felt like it dragged and dragged. The best part for me was the end - I realized the moment the door unlocked itself, it was Eleven. When she walked through the door in slow motion, and you see Hopper slowly lower his gun, my eyes began sweating, I won't lie. Great closer. Felt like the show again. The rest of the episode? Very mediocre, especially in comparison to the fantastic rest of the series. I'm about to watch the finale, I hope it's a lot better.
