Animal (2023)
Animal (2023): A Rollercoaster of Expectations
"Animal (2023) starts strong, with the first 30 minutes creating expectations reminiscent of 'Gangs of Wasseypur.' However, it veers off course with an excess of gratuitous scenes, particularly in the realm of sex and beds, wasting valuable time. Despite this, the impeccable acting by the entire cast is a saving grace. Ranbir delivers a flawless performance in the action sequences, yet the film elicits mixed feelings, deviating from audience expectations. Overall, 'Animal' falls short of what was anticipated. Animal' is a cinematic journey that leaves viewers with a complex mix of emotions and a lingering sense of what could have been.
Prakash (2022)
PRAKASH: A LIGHT TICKLE OF HOPE
"Prakash" unfolds the poignant tale of a young boy aspiring to be a teacher, navigating a life overshadowed by darkness forged through poverty and adversity. Despite the movie's title meaning "light," Prakash and his mother Sita find themselves immersed in a miserable existence.
The film skillfully weaves the Nepali narrative into its own unique style, shedding light on the socio-political landscape through slogans adorning Karnali's walls, offering a stark portrayal of Nepal's dirty political canvas.
Pradeep Khadka and Diya Maske, portraying Prakash and his mother, elevate the film with commendable acting, delving deep into the nuances of their characters. Khadka's adoption of the Jumli accent and impactful body language aptly encapsulates the struggles of a youth oppressed by poverty and systemic challenges.
While the screenplay boasts powerful dialogues, the narrative falters in maintaining fidelity to the original story, leaving supporting arcs underdeveloped. Nevertheless, the movie's technical aspects shine, with well-executed background music, location choices, and sync sound enhancing the overall cinematic experience.
The cinematography, marked by stunning night scenes, underscores the characters' psychological struggles and the darker facets of their lives. Dinesh Raut's direction, framed in the scenic village of Jumla, establishes him as a creative force in Nepali cinema, using wider frames to intertwine environment and character.
Yet, "Prakash" is not without flaws, with redundant scenes risking audience disconnection. The choice of color palette, though expressing Karnali's rugged landscape, seems to lose its tone's vibrancy, creating a sense of technical fake.
Despite these drawbacks, the film captivates with its well-executed symbolism. The recurring motif of characters wearing only a couple of outfits symbolizes the apparent deprivation in Jumla. Wooden sculptures haunting Prakash convey a powerful message about dreams and ambitions, contrasting the protagonist's humanity with the lifelessness of idols.
The use of a bridge as a motif adds depth, symbolizing ominous separation between land masses. As the screen's brightness diminishes throughout the film, the culmination in darkness at the end completes the narrative, making "Prakash" a must-watch Nepali movie, a nepali film recommendation i rarely do.
Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966)
THE GODFATHER OF ITALIAN CINEMA
"The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" is the ultimate western flick, hands down. It's got everything, from massive war scenes to the epic final showdown. It's like a rollercoaster of funny moments, violent clashes, and deep thoughts.
Eli Wallach steals the show with the best supporting performance ever - he's the heart and soul of this movie. And Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Wallach all hit it out of the park playing these grubby, sly, and spirited cowboys. You can practically feel Clint's intense gaze through the screen.
Sergio Leone's camera work is like a work of art, using wide shots and close-ups to build tension and deliver those cool shootouts. It's pure eye candy.
Ennio Morricone's music is simply unforgettable. It wraps the film in a musical masterpiece that'll stay with you forever. The soundtrack is like the cherry on top.
In the end, this film is all about the never-ending chase for the almighty dollar, even if it means risking your neck. It's a real gem in Italian cinema and a must-watch for anyone who loves a good movie. It's the cream of the crop, folks!
Chiso Maanchhe (2022)
Why to watch CHISO MANCHHE?
If the director wants the audience to immerse themselves in the story and feel the emotion of the story, then he must know when to show and when to tell. Emotional moments, opinions, and condolences are better shown than spoken. This principle of film is called - "show, don't tell".
CHISO MANCHHE also falls in this category. Chiso Manche is an artistic film made for the smart audience. This is a Nepali cinema that can compete in the crowd of world cinemas. The target audience of this film is those who like artistic films, watch Iranian, Korean, Japanese or any movies in the world with subtitles in that language. Therefore, this film, which has been performed with the original rhythm, deserves both encouragement and praise.
What was the real face of the country during the Covid pandemic? The Schools, trades, business, transport, etc. Were all stopped; the outside environment was as deserted as the fear of the epidemic was playing drums in people's minds. During this time many people died all over the world. Nepali also died everywhere at home and abroad. At the meantime, a corpse comes to Nepal from abroad in a wooden box and this film tells the story of the family who is receiving that wooden box and taking it to their home. Thus, CHISO MANCHHE is a Road Movie. Despite being a Road movie, it covers a lot of things in layers with meanings. Here the story is presented at different levels from the increased physical distance between people to social distancing and discrimination in between peoples. It was difficult even to walk, vehicles were not running, and you have to travel in a vehicle with a corpse on it. There was no humane behavior even in a sensitive matter like death.
In this journey, the unhelpful behaviour of the political party is seen, the irresponsibility of the administration is shown. The struggle of ordinary citizens is seen, the rule of power is shown. A woman in search for freedom is seen, discrimination prevalent in the community is shown. The film depicts the story of a woman who is shrunk by not being able to run after her dreams.
The acting of the actors is also good. Swastima Khadka's hard work on the speaking style and costumes is reflected in the visuals. Her acting is so good that you can't take your eyes off her at any moment. Similarly, after watching this film, it has been confirmed once again that Arpan Thapa should move forward in the field of cinema as an actor rather than as a director. Arpan Thapa plays the role of an innocent character in the film while Swastima Khadka plays the rebellious character. Similarly, Deshbhakta Khanal has played the role of a person with frigid heart in the beginning, but during the journey, a human change can be seen in him.
This film also has excellent music and solo soundtrack with meaningful lyrics. Cinematography of this film is also excellent.
There is a subtle theme hidden in CHISO MANCHHE that you don't need an eye-popping romance to explain the language of love, you don't need your cast to weep forever to remind the fate.
Ainaa Jhyal Ko Putali (2020)
While watching this; Even TEARS became cheap.
I assume - No human being in the Earth will dislike this film. The fantastic display of acting by Bidya, Basanta and Bange is proof that talent of natural acting has no age limit. Film is at the maximum height of creativity and salute to the director who excelled in writing and directing it.
Watching this film is like
-listening to Osho's discourse,
-or time traveling to see your own childhood,
-or playing a movie yourself by stepping inside the screen.
It has the ability to change mood, add warmth to our mind and body, and take us back to memories of a time that were often idealized with excitement and longing.
In brief, its nostalgic.
This film is excellent in all aspects such as the technical aspect, the presentation aspect of the story, the emotional aspect of the characters and the artistic quality of the presentation.
This film not only tells the story of Nepali women but of women of entire Asia continent because I've heard that, after watching this film at the Busan Film Festival, a female audience came to the organizers with tears in her eyes and said, "This is my story. How did my story become a film? Thank you for showing such a great film!"
Kabaddi 4: The Final Match (2022)
A Must Watch!
From the very beginning of the Kabaddi franchise's film, I haven't seen any sequel in the theatres, despite the excellent organic narration and acting style. The franchise lost some of its charm in the second sequel and made me fully disappointed in the third sequel. But it was Virkaji's love that brought me to the theatre to play the final match of Kabaddi on "1st day 1st Show".
But finally director Rambabu Gurung came back in form. That old organicity is back in the film. Rambabu has even returned Jhankri (Upendra Subba) to hypnotize the audience. Everyone has acted at a good level. Its adorably sweet and entertaining movie having many enjoyable references and heart touching moments which increases our affection for the characters. The screenplay is a bit sluggish but I merely take my eyes off the screen. Camera framing, angles and other aspects are also good. The photography is wonderful while the landscape and outdoor shots are amazing.
At last, Filmmakers must think about - "what and how much about a film should be showed in a 3 ½ minute long trailer?" Viewers who have watched both the trailer and the movie will understand why I said this.
Bulbul (2019)
Ba 1 Ha 3899
I can't tell how excited I was to see the movie Bulbul. But I didn't get chance to watch this movie anywhere before. If you miss to watch a good Nepali film in 'Film Hall', you won't be able to watch it anywhere.
I get chance to watch Bulbul on Nepal-EU virtual film festival 2021. This film somehow reminded me of another nepali movie Saanghuro. In fact, there is nothing in this film but at the same time, it has everything. After watching it, I thought, only this type of film can save the reputation of the Nepali film industry.
'Bulbul' is artistic. The main character of 'Bulbul' is powerful. Other characters are no less. The direction is also awesome. The stories and dialogues are also excellent.
The main theme of the film is love. Film says - The only basic desire of human is love, other factors are secondary. No matter how strong the mindset is, it is the love that the mind seeks. Love is not bounded by time, situation and any other bondage like marriage. Not only achievement, loss too is love.
Kimi no na wa. (2016)
Suggest me some adjectives to praise this film!
It hasn't been so much time since I started watching anime movies. I used to think that cartoons are just for kids. I have had some primitive and conservative thoughts that they are fools who get involved in cartoons. But I found out that I was wrong only after watching the movie Inside Out. Since then, I have tasted a few dozen anime films. But I had never seen a movie like Your Name.
The concept of the film is amazing. The film manages to entertain as well as inform. The story is extraordinary. This is a visual treat for the eyes. The film is more than perfect in emotion, story, character development, camera work and visuals. Though i want to praise this film I'm out of word.
Aama (2020)
Nearly Tearjerker
'Aama' is the story of all son and daughters. It has exposed the plight of Nepal's health sector. The thin but strong social perception of childless couples and inter-religious marriages has also been pointed out. The final scene was completely surprise for me just because it's a Nepali film. Although there are some flaws, this is a kind of movie we really want in Nepali film industry.
Junu Ko Jutta (2019)
One word for this film is "Sweet".
If one can find such a sweet message within couple of minutes, Why not to watch film and grab a message from it?
This film shows the innovative mind of a little girl to overcome her problem.
Watch it once.
A Billion Colour Story (2016)
I thought its a documentary and started watching
We are ordinary people before we associate with any particular nation, religion, culture, gender, etc.
Seeing the whole world divided under one pretext or another, it seems that humanity is disappearing somewhere.
Tolerance and diversity do not touch us; In fact, it slips into the mouth. We promote discrimination. Our thinking is becoming a stigma for society.
This is the case all over the world. Where does the consciousness of dividing people on the basis of religion, class, caste, etc. come from?
After watching a movie called A Billion Color Story, these things kept playing in my mind.
The film manages to capture the religious divisions, intolerance and prejudice. It is a flat and smooth story of oppression given to the people of the society by the people living in the society. These are the things that are elegantly advocated in this film.
The film speaks in its own language - the world is fast becoming ugly due to violence, discrimination and skepticism. Because of this, people are feeling sad and discouraged. All of these must be final.
Red Monsoon (2014)
A good watch
I never heard the name of this film before. It came on theatres in 2014 and was released on YouTube a month earlier. The frequency of this film coincided with the natural frequency of thirst for film thus causing resonance. My heart beat with maximum amplitude after watching this film. In order to show the bitter truths of Nepali society on screen, this film portrays the attitude of abusive fathers, cowardly husbands, women of the society who have no hand in the so-called situation, discrimination, rape, rebellion etc. through a simple story. The presentation is commendable.
Good films are made in Nepal but Nepali audiences cannot recognize them. This fact is confirmed by the fact that a total of 4,000 views have been received on YouTube in a single month. Let's love such films that can't even reach the level of business production.
