Nizhal (2021)
An interesting, eerie and clever mystery thriller
This mystery thriller has a unique plot and focuses mostly on the psychological aspect surrounding a strange set of events.
In case you are looking for action or romance, this is not the type of movie as the complete focus is on the mystery. Also there are less dialogues and drama like events. So please don't expect a 'masala' type thriller while watching this.
I personally feel everyone acted well as per the suitable role allotted to them.
Overall, mystery thrillers like this are rare in Malayalam and to those people who are looking for a silent (less actions and dialogues), clever and a new storyline; this movie will be suitable.
Brother's Day (2019)
Movie with flop comedies and poor logic (3/10)
The idea of comedy in the movie seems to be showing some drunken men. The movie has a very poor logical flow. It has a serial killer with no info on his background. A good movie always gives emphasis on the background of a serial killer. The characters in this movie often act totally out of their usual nature. In reality, you don't find a meek submissive woman turning out to be a assistant to a serial killer in a short span of time. First it takes some time to develop skills like acting and athletic movements. Plus a sharp minded serial killer wouldn't just trust anyone and easily recruit them as assistants.
Even acting performance of majority of the actors was bad. However, the woman who acted as Prithviraj's sister did a good job and Prasannas's portrayal of the serial killer was excellent.
E (2020)
One of the best horror movies in Malayalam (7.5/10)
This movie is about eerie events sorrounding a middle aged woman who is gradually losing her memory to Alzheimer's disease.
What I really liked about the movie is how it combines traditional and modern practices in various scenes.
Usually Malayalam horror movies as well as many other horror movies have a typical pattern: a woman is abused in some manner and dies. Her soul doesn't attain salvation and she is thirsty for revenge. A priest comes and solves the issue. But this movie is quite different from that pattern. Though horror and fantasy movies are not rational as such, it is supposed to have its own logic. For instance Harry Potter has its own rules which is logical with respect to its level. Similiary many horror movies have its own rules which appear quite silly. But the fantasy logic in this movie is well presented.
On the whole, I really liked this movie very much and consider it to be one of the best Malayalam horror movies of all times.
Tumbbad (2018)
Highly innovative horror thriller (8.5/10)
This is a one of a kind horror thriller. It is unique in the way it treats the perspective of Gods. Though in Puranas, there are Gods like Bhairava or Goddesses like Chamundeshwari that are presented in visually scary forms, this movie creates a feeling of horror at the mere mention of a God! And yet greed makes people stay in the vicinity if this God! Many of the scenes in this movie are extremely scary and also highly original. I still remember some scenes as an image in my head. The movie takes greed, devotion, idea of God and worship to an entirely different level. This is a must watch for someone who is interested in watching a horror thriller.
1920 (2008)
Far from scary, the plot is somewhat silly (3/10)
The movie loosely resembles the Exorcist with concepts of afterlife added to it. Basically a young couple lives in a large mansion with the woman becoming possessed. The rest of the movie is about trying to save her from the spirit. The climax of the movie is so silly. Usually horror movies have some basic logic based on religious rituals, but here even that is missing. Very disappointed after watching this.
Mikhael (2019)
An action movie that sometimes encourages violence among youngsters?
This is an action movie about a brother trying to protect his sister from a revenge attack.
There is a lot of violence in this movie. There is a sudden short cartoon about some Biblical or mythological character (not sure which exactly) that I felt is somewhat out of place with the flow of this movie.
I feel that at times, violence is often glorified and portrayed as something necessary. And hence I feel that this might give an overall negative message to youngsters who are revenge minded or to those people who believe in 'an eye for an eye' type of violence.
Lucifer (2019)
A somewhat predictable political action drama (6/10)
This movie is basically a political action drama. According to this movie, a war is usually between 'more evil' and 'less evil' in which Mohanlal who portrays the main protagonist plays the role of Lucifer- the 'less evil' character.
What I found dull about the movie is the lack of plot twists. I found the plot very predictive in nature. On the whole, I did feel entertained . But I was expecting something much better than this.
Ishq (2019)
Engaging with a combination of romance, suspense and revenge (6/10)
This movie is basically about a young couple who face harassment in the name of moral policing.
Overall the movie is thrilling as it combines romance, suspense and revenge in a very engaging manner. Plus the basic theme of moral policing is very relevant in today's Kerala society where there are a lot of 'elders' overly doing their part of 'moral policing'. But the plot has some minor glitches here and there and I feel that the overall acting could have been better which is why I have awarded this 6 out of 10.
Sankarabharanam (1980)
Outstanding Movie (10/10)
This is one of the best movies among the movies I have seen. The theme is excellent, portrayal of characters is highly realistic, plot is flawless and the songs are outstanding. I hope this movie becomes a classic.
This movie is perfect for people who are interested in understanding the society (social life led by people) of South India (specifically Andhra Pradesh) during the l1970s and 1980s and transition of musical culture from one generation to another. This movie is a must watch for people who love Carnatic music.
Apart from this, I strongly believe that in general, any type of audience will enjoy watching this movie. I don't know Telugu language but still I enjoy(ed) watching it in Telugu. But I was also fortunate to once watch it in Malayalam or Tamil when the dubbed version came on TV.
Oru Vadakkan Selfie (2015)
A thoroughly enjoyable comedy thriller (7.5/10)
This is one of my favorite movies released in the 2010 plus years.
It really entertained me - both as a comedy as well as a thriller.
The theme in this movie is very relevant in the present day scenario where cyber crimes are becoming increasingly common.
This is one of those movies that I would watch whenever it comes on the TV (provided I am free).
Virus (2019)
Excellent Medical Thriller
This is one of the best (medical) thrillers I have seen and also a very realistic portrayal of the characters from the actual virus outbreak scenario based on my reading of news reports ( I had closely followed the outbreak when it happened). The makers of this movie has done a great research before creating this movie and a respect them for that.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie and I will recommend this to anyone who wants to watch a good medical thriller.
(One thing I felt that could have been avoided were somewhat gross scenes like vomiting. But then, maybe in a medical thriller - such things are to be expected. )
The Family Man (2019)
Engaging and thrilling theme, but very unrealistic characters
The overall theme is indeed very thrilling and engaging. But yet somehow I felt that many things in this series are highly unrealistic.
I don't want to give spoilers so I am not elaborating much on any point
1. I am from Chennai and I found the family of Mr. Tiwary very unrealistic from a typical South Indian middle class family (such as they way the parents responded in finding that the girl possessed some drugs at school, her speaking in English sometimes)- also the clothes and accessories they use.
2. Dialect of Malayalam in Kasargod is very different from what is shown in the series. And also 'Ikka' would have been more suitable than 'Chetan' for this case.
3. The actor who portrayed the character of the main terrorist appeared weak and less confident and somewhat unsuitable to take up the role. I did not feel like he was a passionate and intelligent terrorist at any point of time.
4. Climax - very careless operation by the team in spite of knowing the exact location and people involved (compared to other episodes where the team was sharp)
5. Main protagonist heavily drinks and smokes and has fluctuating sugar levels. But is perfectly physically fit for on on-field high risk tasks.
Overall, I felt I was watching some fantasy thriller instead of a real life based thriller. I am disappointed and I feel I have wasted time.
Neerali (2018)
A good and a very realistic movie
I feel that the title of the movie is not very suitable and also that the trailer is very misleading. The trailer gave me a wrong impression that the lead character of the movie is in (a wrong) relationship with various women which is not the case. (Initially. I even decided not to watch the movie after seeing the trailer.)
The protagonist in the movie is very realistic and does not possess great mental and physical capabilities (unlike heroes in 90% of other survival films). Acting is very subtle and does not contain 'severe' facial expressions. There are no great stunts. So in case the audience is expecting all these, they will be in for a disappointment.
If you are in for how an ordinary person will respond to a terrible accident, you will enjoy the movie.
