Goth (2003 Video)

Haha the most UNgoth thing ever, but-!

On the serious side.. the only *remotely* goth thing in this was the makeups. Nothing goth in the activities, attitudes or even the music. Now, if you don't watch this expecting something serious, it can be quite enjoyable. It's actually brilliantly ridiculous. Overally, watch it with the idea of how you'd be watching for example a high-school theatrical play. Or a raw home video, the whole VHS-y blend of it makes it like that, it doesn't look or feel like an actual movie haha. The people who made this probably aren't professional filmmakers, or even more so, movies aren't the main thing they do, it's more like part of something else. Have to admit though, Phoebe Dollar's character had some moments with potential. Should this be re-made as a real movie, it might not be too shabby.

Don't Let Go (2019)

Inceptionstellar Darko, lite

All I can say is, someone had a decent interesting idea to combine Interstellar elements and Inception elements with a very little Donnie Darko flair but unfortunately the idea fully fell through when it turned more into just an average crime drama with drug deals while the whole sci-fi feel went like casual in the background. As a drama, it's a fair movie, not bad.

The Source of Shadows (2020)

Sweet bundle

This is like someone put together shorts from Alter or Omeleto, it's pretty good! Antologies are always very hit or miss but all the ones in Source of Shadows were hit for me. Except the second segment which was way too short and supposed to be comedy but it was just stupid. All the rest however, I enjoyed very much- some beatifully shot, some with very good acting, some with interesting and original ideas. I want to go in detail for each one but I want to avoid making spoilers. If you like stuff like Demon(2017) or Field Guide to Evil, Source of Shadows is somewhere in between and I could recommend it.

No, you won't be given a backstory explained on a platter. You won't be fed pointlessly epic CGI effects. You won't even see it in colours. But just watch it. It's not long. After you've seen the whole thing with the ending, just try to answer this: how long could it really take, all our strive to advance tehnology, to backfire on us, and make the smallest and simplest things that we now take for granted and seem even stupid to us, worth dying for?... Might seem like the most "dull" Black Mirror episode but I think it's the deepest. That ending brought tears to my eyes.

Why are Spanish horrors so good!?

The Spanish are masters in these kinds of movies. In the spirit and atmosphere style like "Los Sin Nombre" and "El Orfanato", it combines drama with mystery/supernatural in a balanced and intelligent way. The story plays with the concept of is the life of a random person worth taking to save the life of a loved relative, and plays it very well. Really makes you think, if it were you, would you do it? Or would you step down at the border of selfishness?.. Definately worth watching, and thinking.

Dark Heaven (2002)

Abstract and artistic

If you watch this film as a movie as usual - to follow a plot, see some effects and try to relate to characters etc. you'll be confused, frustrated or bored. However if you sit down at it with the mindset of seeing something of the sorts of an art film, then I guarantee you that you will appreciate the instances it hurls you into one after the other and the experience within them. This film is a series of abstract, obscure metaphors and states to be experienced and more theatrical-like delivery than a regular movie. It's not for everyone, I agree but I personally enjoyed it very much. Simply be prepared for something abstract rather than a show to be watched on the surface.

Apartment 212 (2017)

Cute little thing

When I sat down to watch this film, I clearly knew I'm doing it out of boredom and having nothing better to watch. So I was expecting to see something very silly just for the fun of it. But I was very nicely surprised that this film turned out to be decent! True, it is quite cliché but the story is coherent and develops nicely, it doesn't get too slow or boring even if at a point it reaches the verge of it. But then we get this (to me at least) cute little creature and everything and it balances very nicely.

For those that may be looking for a heavy mystery OR slasher-kind of traditional gore.. well, it won't be your thing. But for those looking to kill some time while having their curiousity maintained, entertained and are open-minded to some humor, as well as not being judgemental or expecting wow-s, it's a pretty good movie. Compared to the majority of the stereotype of "stupid teenagers running around while being chased by a monster or villain" Apartment 212 is a real jewel, it has none of that. In fact, you'll find some quality presentation and interesting elements. The characters are relatable and likeable, it's pretty simple really, and has an unexpectedly catchy atmosphere.

After I watched it, I really want to see something similar but I'm actually having difficulties finding something with equal quality - which to me means it managed to more or less impress me somehow and is better than most of the rest of cliché choices. I'd say it's a good and enjoyable watch! If you have time you don't know what to do with, give it a chance.
