Elsbeth (2024)
Ridiculous, lazy and so wasteful.
The first episode provided an encouraging opening with good contributions from seasoned actors. This was one show I was really looking forward to seeing more of and with the pilot released well in advance of the other episodes, it was with some excitement I awaited the rest.
What a massive disappointment and I can only assume that anyone giving this show more than 5 stars has based that rating on the 1st episode- either that or they've a very low iq.
Read every review at 5 stars or below and you'll have a good idea how bad this show is. There is no mystery to the criminal event Elsbeth solves every week. They literally show the crime being committed in the opening credits and from there it's a walk through with Elsbeth solving the crime. No set locations or expensive scenery, this is all shot from a single lot, cheap editing and producing but nothing to be cheerful about. I rarely wrote reviews but made an exception at the indignity of passing this show as entertainment.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves (2023)
The poor relative of Taylor's shows
The opening episode was thrilling as it picks up during the American civil war with a black man fighting for the confederates although it soon becomes clear that he's still considered a lesser person even though he's risking his own life. They should've concentrated on this premise as it initially evolved into the two best episodes of the serious. Following this it becomes pretty boring to be honest and the episodes are criminally short, falling into streaming shows, 101, 'let's make this movie into 8 episodes'. The acting is competent and the production, as you'd expect from Taylor Sheridan is first class, just a shame the final product falls way below.
The Northman (2022)
Viking? More like Boring!
Like all modern cinema nowadays, everything's scaled down. Think Gladiator- produced by the local amatuer drama company. This was supposed to be an 'Epic' movie but essentially takes place on a small farm, no twists, no character development- the plot laid out in the first 20 mins and doesn't deviate- once! I would've given it a 6 or 7 but with quality of cast and the fact it was promoted as being the 'new Gladiator ' the 5 marks it does get tells you how far short of that standard it is.
Occasionally the film in an effort to offer something more, oddly delves into fantasy and the occult but it just fuels the films downfall.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Almost.. but not quite
If you fancy a trip down memory lane-Tarintino's Hollywood memory lane, then this films for you.
The acting from Pitt and Di-Caprio is immense and there's a shuffle of notable characters from that period of time to keep you entertained.
Unfortunately, that's all the movie really delivers, there's no central theme and a plot is eventually outlined and concluded in the films last 30 minutes. At nearly 3 hours long, you can't help but feel short changed at the finish. Yet, your still thinking of the film days later, re- examining what you watched, trying to find an argument against being disappointed.
Tarintino's films are held to a very high standard, such is the product he's previously delivered. There's an intellectual snobbery to judging Tarintino's films- if you don't get it, it's on too high a plain for you, but that's nonsense. If Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown and Django Unchained are masterpieces, this deserves no more than a 7
