Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
Emotional, Scary and nearly well made short movie
This installment of the Insidious franchise goes back to Lambert's family and their struggle with the red demon from the further. Movie slowly reveals it's story upto preclimax in well paced manner. Background music is one of the best aspects of the movie. Father and son moments of this movie feel organic and emotional, made me instantly engaged with this movie story. Suspense building and jumpscares are excellently handled by director turned actor Patrick willson and his performance as Josh Lambert is also solid. The actor who played Dalton Lambert was unable to fully justify the past trauma emotions of his character and rest of the cast didn't have much to play with. The red demon screen time and the movie climax feels shorter than they should have been. Overall, it is a good horror movie with minimal story and nice emotional moments.
Extraction 2 (2023)
A top notch action entertainer with familiar story
This movie is an action entertainer through and through. The single take action scenes in this movie are amazing and gripping. While the story plays in a familiar beat, the acting of the characters sells it and the actors have done a decent job in dramatic scenes.
Chris Hemsworth shines as an action star. His dramatic acting chops are yet to be utilized by hollywood as evident by performance in this movie.
My complaints with this movie are limited to one dimensional villain and some not well finished blasting scenes. From mid point of this movie, audience require greater dose of suspension of disbelief.
The climax of this movie concludes our hero's journey to accept his past and move on and leaves us with excitement for future installments in this franchise.
The Terminal List (2022)
It delivers
It's a bit slow to my liking but it's execution & acting are what makes this show a must watch. Chris Pratt acting range is excellent in this one. Characters never overstays their welcome.
Moon Knight (2022)
Don't believe the hateful reviews
This review is coming from a person who thinks 2nd half of Wanda vision, Falcon and winter Soldier, Loki, Hawkeye & Even some portion of What if as mediocre at their best. But, everything in moon knight looks like perfect. Oscar Isaac is terrific & every other performances are solid. No cringe humour (yet), good cinematography, engaging music, tight editing, solid pacing with good character study filled to brim with mystery. I absolutely loved the first episode, even dubbing into my own language is done well. Only disappointing thing in this episode is that they could have properly shown moon knight fighting the werewolf.
The Batman (2022)
This movie is a painful art
This movie focusses on pain of the batman. This is not an origin movie ( who are we kidding? Everybody knows batman origin ). Batman is fighting a losing battle against corruption in gotham. He tries too hard to control/save Gotham city and it is eating him from inside. He is not even trying to keep up his social appearances. Bruce thinks the batman work is the only thing that gives his life any meaning and doing it so will honour his parents legacy. But, he took it far enough that now it is creating problems for the city and himself by inspiring wrong people. In this movie, batman learnt his lesson to embrace the Bruce Wayne side more to help the poor along with punishing criminals as vengeance. Movie production is top notch, it has great cinematography, music, good & interesting characters, nice storyline, thrilling action sequences. What more could you ask for???
The Book of Boba Fett: Chapter 5: Return of the Mandalorian (2022)
Best episode of the series so far ( Not a star wars fan )
The return of our favourite mando Din djarin makes this show intersting and it made me invested once again. As I mentioned in the title, I'm not a star wars fan. I liked the mandalorian for what it is & have some idea of starwars lore. Boba Fett seemed like an interesting and fearsome character in mandalorian season 2, but he is quickly nerfed in his own show. After episode 1, show became progressively bad until episode 4. Episode 4 is an improvement but compared to the mandalorian, it is a miss by long shot. The decisions made by boba fett to solve territory issues feels like he is more of a dysfunctional family head rather than the crime lord he wants to be. He is behaving like Godfather & it sure looks like gonna be backstabbed. Plus, the action sequences are not good to be honest ( Especially the bike chase scene in episode 3 is horrible ). I was wondering whether it had the same budget of the mandalorian show or not. For example, take that spider-cave battle on ice planet from the mandalorian season 2. So, seeing mando back and his story progressing makes me happy and invested in this show once again.
Minnal Murali (2021)
A good attempt, but painfully slow movie.
Minnal Murali movie is an honest attempt at superhero genre. It has good story, nice visual effects and action sequences. A decent setup is laid for hero and villain to gain their powers. Actors performances are good, especially movie villain takes special attention & he is genuinely threatening at times. But, hero characterization lacks in creating interest over the film and his motivations & romance plot (???) are pointless. All things considered, the movie screenplay is awfully slow in it's story narration. They could have easily trimmed down 30-40 mins & it doesn't change any experience in watching of the movie.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
A watered down version of matrix sequel
This movie feels like literally a watered down version of an intelligent script. Somehow it feels good & bad at the same time. Movie tries so hard to be meta with itself, but the metaphors used for conversations falls flat (It didn't excite me). New characters are not explored properly, so we don't feel much connection with them and making old characters silly, miserable felt cheap. Interesting ideas introduced like survival of human race in the new city of "io" by co-existing with machines, The whole matrix depending on Neo & Trinity's doomed reality are just glazed over. The choices taken for characters of Smith, Morpheus feels intersting and executed well. The trap created by the new analyst for neo and trinity seems clever until it is revealed how easy and little effort needed for them to break out of it. Action sequences are standard & decent for a big budget movie like this, nothing noteworthy/special. The emotional connection between the lead pair is present in only small doses. The movie ends on a humorous and ambiguous note, which is a strange choice for a concept dealing with free will vs controlled reality. As per usual norm of latest hollywood movies, Every major decision & power is owned by a certain gender, atleast that much is obvious.
The Witcher (2019)
A great show for people who don't know the witcher books/games
The witcher season 2 focus more on character motivations & growth, expanding the world (More background story on elves, monsters & world formation) using linear storytelling. Majority of the characters are not what they seem initially. Compared to season 1, action & humor took a bit of downhill. Major twits and future threats are revealed at perfect time to keep us excited for future seasons. Henry cavil & the actress played ciri are excellent in their roles like they should be as they are the pillars for this show.
Hawkeye (2021)
A show that works better, if you are casually viewing it
Hawkeye is a very well executed, grounded, as realistic as it can get inside mcu kind of a show. I finally understood the problem with my viewing of (any/all) mcu shows ==> That I rely on breakdown videos of individual episodes for better understanding of the show, which inadvertently raises more expectations for future episodes and I feel disappointed when the same are not met. So, I watched this casually without any aid and found it surprisingly good ( except for some light cringe moments in finale ). Jeremy Renner seems a little out of it, but Hailee Steinfeld killed it and became one of my favourite characters among mcu along with Yelena (excited to see where she pop's up next).
Eternals (2021)
An isolated, A bit flawed but heartfelt entry into mcu
This movie is visually stunning, well put together ( for it's own story and scope size ) with surprisingly heartfelt, real emotional moments. Only shortcoming is this movie tackles too much of a story in one swoop and it felt a little bit out of blue ( the cosmic side of mcu ). It is more layered story and it will come into picture in future. I saw the low critical score this movie got across all the flatforms and I thought may be this movie is bad but I'm wrong. It just tackles a different variety of story and didn't succeed all the way. It is an experiment and be patient with it to bare the fruits.
Dune (2021)
Why do they even made this movie?
I don't know the source material. After seeing this movie, I have only one question that is " why do they even made this movie ?". Because it is a scene after a scene without proper connection, most boring visuals ( I suppose it is a desert planet ), hastily thrown dream sequences, no character development ( You don't even understand the changes they are going through ). I have never seen such a high budget boring movie. Not even a single thing to be excited for. Actors performances are ( maybe according to the script ) as dull as it can be. Please don't waste your time and money by watching this movie.
The Guilty (2021)
This movie is for attentive watcher's
You just have concentrate on lead actors performance to feel the film to it's full capacity. What if it is a remake?? They didn't steal the concept. They bought movie rights and remade it. Because of this english remake only majority of people came to know about original movie. So, say thanks to the people who made this & enjoy the film for what it is.
What If...? (2021)
A half baked show at best
This series had so much potential to tell the story of marvel characters in different (What if...?) scenarios. But it plays too safe most of the time and delivers emotion less nostalgic moments in a sprinkled manner. As a typical marvel project, it acts like a trailer to future marvel projects by introducing different characters with game changing abilities, breaking established continuity & power levels.
